Low coolant light on when new battery fitted, engine hot idling, no fans coming on.

My 1998 SLK 230 Kompressor Auto needed a new battery so I took it to a recommended battery supplier/fitter and immediately after the new battery was fitted I noticed the orange light on the dash was illuminated which I thought meant low screen wash fluid as it was running low. So immediately I got the car home I filled up the screen wash tank with water. The light was still on so I checked the manual and the light on the dash refers to the coolant level which I checked and it was full up and not at all low.

I've been checking it for a while but there are no leaks but the light is still on but the fans are not coming on when the engine gets hot. It doesn't normally get hot but I left the car for a few weeks and the battery went flat so I left the engine idling to charge the battery and that's when it did get hotter than normal but the fans didn't come on.

I've asked my local garage to check it and they let the engine idle until hot and to the temperature the fans should come on and they didn't come on. Left to idle much longer and the water would certainly boil over. Anyone got any idea what's happening here? Might it be something to do with the battery being fitted incorrectly? It was fine before the new battery was fitted. Thanks very much in advance for any replies.

I no expert on the r170. I would check the temperature sensor that switches the fan's on and off. have you switched the a/c on? this would start the fans also. this way you can check if the fan motors still work.

I'd like to bet $25 on "Secret blown fuse"?

seriously, I bet its the secret fan fuse thats blown. Theres a secret fusebox right in front of the battery. Its a little black square. In that fuse box are 3 fuses- 1 of which is for the fan. When that fuse blows it triggers the coolant light.

Check the float in the coolant bottle, mine was the same, for some reason the float had sunk, I pulled it back to its correct position with a pair of pliers and it has been fine since
