Question HELP!!! Erratic instrument cluster gauges and continuous beeping…

The supercharger on my 1999 SLK230 stopped working and my OBD II reader showed P1235, P1236, P1420 and P1525 codes. Thanks to this and other forums I was able to narrow it down to K40 relay (THANKS, I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE VALUABLE INFO!!!).

Two days ago I disconnected the battery (negative terminal) and removed the K40 Relay. Sure enough I found a bad/burnt connection and re-soldered it. Today, I re-connected all plugs to the K40 relay and re-connected the battery. When I sat inside the car I noticed the lights illuminating the clock, mileage and outside temp being “ON” (please see attached pics) and heard a continuous “beeping” coming from the dash. Gas gauge and engine temp needles DO move and stay at different position every time.

I started the engine and it runs fine. No “Check engine light” and no fault codes on the OBD II reader. Air pump engaged right away and it stayed on for some time. No RPM gauge readings. I took the car for a ride and it seems to be running great – supercharger kicks in, even though I can’t tell at what RPMs. No speed reading either…

Any ideas? Is there anything I need to reset after I re-connect the battery? PLEASE HELP…

Ignition Key OFF, Ignition Key ON and ENGINE RUNNING:

OK logically this is probably going to be related to the work on the module so check back all the connections, look inside the unit check the new joints are all OK and not causing any shorts and that all fuses look good.

You could try a battery cycle to see if that fixes it but i doubt its that nothing that needs resetting should cause things like that to happen.

If you verify everything you worked on is OK then it could have been an electrical spike that has damaged something int hat case its best get the car to the dealer and they can pop it on the diagnostic even if the codes they get done make sense they will normally point out a bad module or two.

When you heated the terminal for resolder, did the solder on the back side run to another point? Not familiar with the relay but have seen solder run behind when heated and short to another terminal. A thought.... Good luck

Does anyone know... if I pull the instrument cluster and replace it with a new instrument cluster will it resolve the issue of erratic instrument readings with the alarm sounding. Instrument cluster went dead and car will not do anything start. Not sure if to order an instrument cluster to correct the problem.

My cluster has done the same thing. It was like this for me before I got my car. I had the same issue with the k40 but have fixed it. I have checked all of my connections and they seem good. I also have the coolant light on and the dashes for the odometer. Please tell me you have found a solution to this problem, it has been driving me crazy! I don't know if it is related but, my radio's backlight comes on with the lights but, does not display anything. I can hear a slight high pitched sound when the radio is powered on but no real audio.

I know this is an old post but in all my searching this is the only reference to the exact problem I have yet there is no indication of what the remedy was. Hoping to jog some memory out there.

I had a very similar problem to this. After spending a lot of time not finding an answer I simply replaced the cluster and it fixes the issue.
