It may not be a terrible project, but thae fender, bumper, hood, headlights, grille will cost you probablty $1000 at least, assuming you find them in silver, plus at a minimum its going to take a new radiator, temp unit, etc.

I'd say best case scenario- not including your time, your in it for 6k for a high mileage 230, non kompressor, with a salvage title that you can't sell... and thats a LOT of time... I'd rather pay 6-7k for one thats in better condition.

As I stated, thats BEST case scenario. Chances are you'll need to straighten the frame or weld a new front end on there. Around here its about $100 an hour for frame work, 1.5 hout setup time, plus an hour for the measuring system, plus say best case scenario is 6 hours, so another 600-1000 for the frame straightening... and it will probably never be perfect.

Very good chance your into a 8500-9k salvaged title 140k 230, which is probably worth 6k? But if you want to learn how to do all that it may be worth it for the experience, but seems a little steep. If it was a SLK 350, it may be worth it. Thats going to sell to someone who is pulling it for parts, not rebuilding it.

If you end up giving it a shot though, keep us posted how it goes!

Sounds like experience talking. That the kind of straight talk we need.

I took a look at it yesterday purely for entertainment purposes. I measured center-cap to center-cap on the wheels and they were within 1.5MM left and right. The front wheels appeared straight. The roof worked fine and all panels except in the right front area were in good alignment. The engine cranked immediately and ran smoothly, the serpentine belt was turning but I could see the pulleys were out of alignment because the accessories had moved, so I turned it off immediately. Underneath, the cross-member appeared OK but I could see some spoiled plumbing, probably Air Con. There were no apparent leaks. Some of the front reinforcements were bent up badly.

I think it was eminently repairable. I would've made an offer had it been a manual... but it was a nice day for a drive regardless.

That was my first thought too when I saw the asking price vs. the photos.

And once they are wrecked, they are never quite the same.

Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much money....

Check eBay and craigslist (for price check only what is selling for) for 98-01's prices with comparable mileage and then decide. Keep in mind everything that was said above too....

Plainly not worth it....

There are ALWAYS more gremlins to battle !!!

I bought a 99 107kmi. needing an engine. No big deal right? Plus I had a 55kmi. engine complete in my garage from a 2000 C230k already. Bought a new torque converter while access was easy, they dont last much over 140Kmi. They lose torque.

Since then I have not been able to start it ( error start), I have purchased a new key, checked the K40 and PSE ( re-soldered all points), fixed a handfull of commonly noted and related possible issues, incl; trans. connector leaking, trunk light connector, blown fuses, etc.

I have also, bought Sport skirts for it, 17" Monoblock 2 wheels from a E55,
made a 3/16" lexan windscreen, painted lower black bumper trim to match body color (silver),& dis assembled stripped and painted interior peeling paint from red to match it's silver body color.

Still will need the window tabs glued back on the get propper alignment, + little work here and there.

Planed work in progress to be done, Custom crank balancer/pulley to use aftermarket interchangeable pulleys. MAF relocate. Trying to find out what FPR people are using?? THinking about a POSI in the rear differential.

Now I paid approx $3000. for the car. Looks good, I know it's been worked on in the past. But when I'm done it will be how I want it, & I will trust it. Figuing a total investment of just under $6000. I do all my own work. I think I need Benz to get it started, I feel it's either a bad key or some sort of reprogramming.

Does your starter engage and turn the engine over?

Starter engage

NOPE The start error message from what I'm told is a lock out. The DAS is not accepting the transponder chip in the key. So, although I can turn the metal key in the lock cylinder, and get power thru the vehicle. No power goes to the starter to crank.

You need to have the VIN coded in the ECU match the VIN coded in DAS match what's programmed on the keys. I'm not sure a dealer would be able to resolve either, as their normal line is it can't be done...

There are a couple of Indy shops who have done engine transplants, and managed to make it work..

So where is the problem???

The vehicle's engine computer, & DAS are orig. nothing has changed. I puchased a new key, which did make other things operate, but does not make the car run. The old key looked like a dog ate it. All three should match.
