Clock spring...where are you????

Hi guys...I just had my SRS light go off this morning and took it into the dealer for diagnostic...they said that it looks like I need a new contact spiral with squibs...I asked the tech if that was the clockspring and he said yes. Can anyone confirm?

Also...I ran a few searches for clock spring, but did not see anything relevant that came up. Has anyone here replaced a clock spring on their own? $115 for the part...$450 total including labor. I'd rather do it myself if there's a DIY or if it's a fairly straightforward replacement.

Thanks guys and gals!

Hi poohlikeshunny, I don't know about the SLK, however, I had a clock spring that had to be replaced in one of my old trucks ('03 Dodge Hemi). Took forever for the dealership to identify the problem. The clock spring in my Dodge was inside the steering shaft and allowed all of the electronics (turn signals, windshield wipers, cruise control, etc.) to function whilst the steering wheel was turning.

Considering airbags and electronics it seems like a fair price.

Yeah, it's a fair price, esp working with airbags. I was just hopng that there was a DIY on here that showed how to get the airbags and steering wheel off...I saw some clocksprings for like $115 online, then 17 bucks for the star srs reset tool....would be way cheaper if it's just a matter of unplugging the battery, removing the airbag, removing the wheel, then removing/replacing the clockspring.

Bazzle's writeup looks good up until that point, but he doersn't remove the clockspring so I don't know what intracacies revolve around that...if I need to make sure all airbags are disabled, or have any special tools or whatnot...worst case scenario if I can't figure this out by the end of the weekend then I am taking it to the dealer and letting them do it...but as an avid DIYer...I was hoping to learn to do this myself...

Damn AZ...just saw this.....but yes. I most definitely learn a load of info during this ordeal...and it was really much simpler than the dealer made it out to be!!! Long live enthusiast forums!!!
