Red face Windscreen washers and newbie so apols if forum etiquette not quite right)

Hi,

Only had my SLK 200 Kompressor for a couple of weeks and never dreamt I would own a Mercedes so totally unprepared and know almost nothing. I think from what I've read it's a R170 - first registered in 2000.

The first time out I pressed windscreen washers and the smell was so bad it was enough to make me wretch. One jet seemed partially blocked and the other not up to much either but took her to our usual garage (not Mercedes dealership) for a service and asked if they would to give her a look over and asked if they could drain the washer bottle!

1st Question: Having just received the datacard from Jeff I see that it has a 'heated washer system' would that have anything to do with the vile smell and has anyone else encountered similar?

2nd Q: Does the washer system activate automatically when the temp drops or is there a button or a switch or something I have to do?

3rd Q: Mechanic said that there was a 'T' shaped piece of pipe that needed to be replaced and they had ordered that part from Merced but it hadn't arrived in time for them to fit it so have to give them a call and arrange to take the car in for fitting. The mechanic said replacing the damaged section is a 'bit of a strip down' job and did that sharp intake of breath that mechanics sometimes do! I'm wondering if when I take the car back and I'm going to be charged hours worth of labour to fit a part that costs less that a fiver. If that's the case then.... it is what it is but is it possible that I could fit it myself (or get my husband or brother to do it) ;-)

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

experts will reply but,

1. pretty sure the smell is your washer container has gotten moldy and needs to be cleaned/sterilized or even replaced.

you might also want to see about replacing your cabin filter

2. did you check your owner's manual for the answer to this one? do you have an owner's manual? we can get you one if you don't. switch located center console.

3. you can replace it yourself

Red face

You're a bit of superstar Jeff!!

I will see if I can sterilise it but if not will replace, Q2 Now don't I feel a dumbass for not looking at the manual!
It's so good of you to send me a pdf as I always leave car manuals in the car so now I wont have to remember to bring it in the house (and remember to put it back in the car)!

I will get my husband (who was a Sergant Major in the British Army, recently retired after his 23 years) to have a go and replacing the 'T shaped part'.

This Slk ownership just gets better and better and so interesting. I've still got a few more issues to ask about though but pretty confident that none of them are major.

The pdf is really not for your 200 but should get you close but it is good you have a hard copy

Please thank your hubby for his service!!!

use the parts list to get the part number and maybe check what it costs online. then when they give you the part and you can compare the part numbers, see how much markup they are charging you.

Julia, as Jeff has already said, the PDF of the owner's manual is good to get you close, but sometimes worth checking the hardcore version too...

I used a PDF version to check what type of fog light bulbs I needed to replace the ones on my car, only to find that I needed a different type of bulb for mine... it turns out that the US and UK market cars have different fog lamp bulb types on the R171... not an expensive mistake though as a pair of bulbs only cost me about £6 (twice!)
