2001 SLK230 top will not retract

Hello again. I'm a relative new member of 5 months and have been inactive due to health issues which are now resolved. My 230 roof mechanism has worked flawlessly since new but now it will not retract. The last time the top was closed it closed more firmly than normal and now will not operate. When I attempt to lower the top, the windows will lower and I hear a motor running which is probably the actuator motor. Any recommendations before I address the issue.

Hi! Glad to hear you are better but sorry about your roof problems.
I recently had the same issue started happening to me. I'm out of country for a while so didn't get a chance to perform any checks but given that I replaced hydraulic fluid and after a year the pump was acting weird couple times I suspect the pump is simply going west... You can try various checks in the leapyfish's post to diagnose.
I think my way is to rebuild the whole pump...

Battery is a 60 month model and almost 3 years old. Will check its condition.
Roof will not operate on battery power or with engine running.

You are not building up pressure in the hydraulic system. My guess is that you have a leaking seal, more likely than having a bad pump.

But if the seal is leaking then fluid should leak also and level should go down. But my fluid level is staying the same...

I'm no expert on fluid mechanics/ hydraulics but you could still have a leak and not change the fluid level.

Instead of fluid leaking out you could have air leaking into the reservoir through micro tears in a diaphragm or seal.

The piston pushes liquid into the system but draws air on its return trip.
Air is harder to compress back. Thus losing hydraulic power.
As no fluid is lost you wouldn't visually see a difference.

There are many aviation and mechanical engineers on the site who can explain it in better terms, but that the gist of it.

Make sure the brass emergency relief on the side of the pump is fully tightened.

Try pushing and holding the switch in both directions - can you hear or feel the two roof latches moving - even a little? If you pry off the round cover do you see any motion?

I recently had the same problem. It started out that everything worked fine up until the point that the top was supposed to start lifting up. If I would give it a bang with my first, it would open up. After 2 months or so of that, I noticed my headliner started getting a TINY wrinkle right around where the plastic cover goes for the manual lock/unlock. Then afyer another minth or so, my headliner started drooping a little. Then one day, I finally noticed a little tiny bit of oily stuff on the front edge of the headliner. All this time my hydraulic fluid level had been fine. I took the headliner out, pulled the button to retract the top, and the dam broke and there was my leak...It started pouring out. Even after having it pour out for that cycle of the top, my fluid level was STILL between the "full" lines. Needless to say, I ended up rebuilding the hydraulic cylinder and now it works perfect. Don't assume that just because your fluid level is fine that you don't have a small leak that will eventually rear its ugly head like I did

Thank you for all your input folks!!! Aplogies buzzjjob for stealing your thread :-)

My story is that I replaced the front locking cylinder seal and it's perfectly fine, replaced the hydraulic fluid (also cleaned the filter inside of the plastic fluid container)
When I hit the switch, my rear windows go down and the front locking cylinder unlatches fine, but the boot/trunk won't raise... At first it was raising the roof wouldn't raise and needed a little push, then next time boot would raise sloooowly... Then disagreed to raise at all. I've seen Wheeler dealer series about SLK and they had the same problem. And after they replaced the pump it started working like a champ
I will try to inspect for any 4 rear cylinder leaks a little later and see if I can find smth...
