Unhappy Convertible Roof Problems

The roof on my MB is a bit erratic in that sometimes it works fine and other times gets "stuck" either going up or down.
The pump always seems to be running which discounts some of the microswitch problems that I've read about on here.
I've had to put it up manually recently and have just noticed that the reservoir for the hydraulic pump is now below the minimum level.
So..... a couple of questions!

1) When you turn the Gold plug on the side of the pump unit (to relieve the pressure before manually putting the hood up) does this allow fluid to come/leak out of the unit?

Reason for asking that last night had to do the "manual lift thing" in the dark but this morning notice that there is fluid generally around the bottom of the unit and inside the trim.

2) What fluid do you use to top up? I've found the reference to the original MB fluid...but no comparison....and a lot of discussion about using a normal ATF or power steering fluid.......any comments?

3) How do you fill it up? There's the gold pressure release plug on the side, a bigger silver one next to it and a duplicate of this one on the top of the unit (which is hidden by the various mini hydraulic line)...so which one?

From my limited experience, opening the relief should not introduce leakage.

The other fitting next to it is pressurized though - if it's loose, it will leak fluid. Make sure it's tight and its seal is OK if you suspect it is the source.

The best way to see the fill port is by looking down from above - through the brushes. For examination purposes you'll probably need to remove the trunk paneling though, which will expose the pump and fill port fully.

Conventional wisdom here is to only use the MB fluid. The alternate fluids simply aren't available in the US.

You should check the hydrolic cylinders for leaks as well , if you are actually loosing fluid ..

Grease all the pivot points of the roof mechanism thoroughly to help the roof move more freely as well .

Hi All..... Update time ))
Excuse long following story but....
When roof "stuck", I did the manual "thing" to get it down, when I put the allen key into the gold fitting on the pump it was already loose....? which made me wonder.
Tracked down some of the specific fluid needed (via here, thanks people) and was Ł12.30 a litre (including VAT)
The incredibly, incredibly nice man (Simon) at Riverale Cars, Portslade, 01273 707007 not only a) quoted me the number when i told him what I wanted b) had it on the shelf and c) offered to show how to fill it up
So I sent "Her who must be obeyed" with the big ......eyes....down to pick it up and ask Simon where the filling plug was.
Not only did he show her the exact location but called out one of the guys from the Mercedes dealer next door (apparently a lot of the Riverale people used to work there) to actually open it (very tight apparently) and they both, with small diameter tube and funnel, filled up the resevoir with the just purchased fluid.
The hard top then worked smoothly and beautifully......just need to keep an eye on the fluid level jic there is a leak somewhere.
Karen (HWMBO) apologised to them both for taking up so much of their time, and hoped that the Mercedes guy would not get in trouble with his boss. He smiled and said "I am the boss"))

Worthy of a mention is that Riverale offer a 1 hour diagnostic check for roof or any other problems for Ł60 ......which seems like a bargain to me.

I apologise if this seems like an advert for Riverale....... But Simon (and his helper!!) were excellent.

Looking forward to some sun to get the roof down!!!

Good advice, less resistance means pump not have to work so hard ))

By "through the brushes" I mean the horsehair-like things visible in the left- and right-hand side of the trunk/boot - where the roof mechanism emerges.

Good find on the relief valve, but keep watching the fluid level -- and especially watch your headliner for any oil in case you have a small leak there.
