Alarm problems!!

I had no sound when my alarm was going off . So I first checked the pse valve which looks new and not wet at all as it has been covered with a plastic liner to keep it that way. So I brought a new siren (Ł97 from M B dealer) and replaced the siren and it now works . Bleeps when turned on and off as well for added bonus.
But a few issues still remain .
1 Only the passenger side indicators flash when turned on or off. Weird because indicators work with hazards and indicating to turn right.
2 Inside sensors don't seem to be working. Alarm only works when doors are opened . Car has a button on the dash to turn them off so I know it should have them.
Is there some sort of reset or something ??
Also where is the alarm so I can check the connections?

Thanks for any help u can give me.

Weird... normally the interior motion sensor is disabled only when the roof is open... Was the roof fully closed when trying?
Does the driver side turn indicator work when the hazard button is on?

Indicators work normal for indicating and hazards work on all four sides ok and when the alarm is going off they work too!! They just don't work when you lock or unlock the car !! . That is the passenger side works and the drivers side doesn't .
On the roof side well it doesn't leak so I would say it is fully closed .Might check to see if theres some sort of connector to tell the car if it is closed see if it is dirty or something .
Thanks again

Thanks for pm Arjen . I cant pm u back yet. Not enough posts but I will check that out when I get the chance. Dome lights do seem to be a bit intermittent when turning them on so maybe u are right. Should they work when doors are open. They don't on mine .
Thanks again

Do you mind helping me figure out how to get at the siren? I'm struggling to find it among conflicting information.
I've removed the wiper arms and the plastic guard below them, but all I see are the horn and the wiper arm motor. I'm looking for the siren (which has a battery that tends to fail).

Is the siren under the plastic guard?
http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/eu...gnal_siren.pdf

This thread seems to have some contradictions:
https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-gen...-location.html

Is the siren somewhere within those photos? Do I need to remove the battery? Is it somewhere behind the battery / between the battery and the plastic guard below the wiper arms?

Thanks- my car is in pieces at the moment and I thought the alarm was under the guard when I started, but I might have to put it back together and take it in.

Hi saltthefries.
That is where my siren was next to the wiper motor and under the plastic. It was a plastic siren where it looks like u have a metal one. But mine is English car so might be different. Are u sure that horn isn't the siren. Maybe someone already changed it ? .Check behind the grill to see if u got horns there as that is where my horns are. Steering wheel horn that is. Just look through gaps and u should be able to see them
Hope this helps

The component seems to be made of metal. It seems to match this: Component Locations h3
I'm trying to find a (likely) failed battery that is supposedly part of this system. I'm getting random alarms going off and I've already checked the PSE and replaced the main / ignition battery.

I have two horns behind the front grille. I'm driving a pre-facelift model, so ours might be a bit different.
Thanks for the response. I've disabled my horn / alarm for now and it seems like that will stop the alarm from going off.

I might try replacing this part. It looks original.

It looks like the above MB part number is 0035426820, which comes up as "HORN" at MBpartsworld.com HORN. BURGLARY ALARM SYSTEM made by Mercedes Benz. #1635420320

Does anybody know if this is a dumb part that gets triggered by something else?

The alarm siren/horn for the antitheft alarm system has some electronics in it. Hence, you CANNOT replace it with any aftermarket horn.
Also, it has a backup battery in it. If someone tries to steal your car and disconnect the main battery of the car, the alarm siren/horn still has power to make noise.
This integrated backup battery is the culprit of most problems, though. After say 10 years, the battery is dead, and starts to leak. This leaking acid corrodes the internal electronics of the alarm siren/horn, which in turn triggers the weirdest errors.

Therefore, if an alarm siren/horn is about 10 years old, and the system exhibits unusual behaviour, most people will advise you to change that siren/horn.
If I'm not mistaken, the alarm siren/horn is located right behind the main battery of the R170 as well. Hence, disconnect the main battery, take it out, and you'll find it right away.

Back to the OP's problem: I suspect that your interior motion sensor is dead. Yet, you should not start randomly replacing parts, so if I were you, I would take the car to the local MB dealership. Explain the problem to the workshop people, and ask if they can do a "Star diagnosis".
This will produce a full read-out of all relevant past and contemporary errors (since the last reset). Ask whether they can please clear up the errors log thereafter. The diagnosis will cost you peanuts, and prevents you from making unnecessary replacements.
Best,

Arjen.

EDIT: Re-reading your comment on the dome light, it may also be that the dome light itself has a proble, or a sensor that detect wether a door or the roof is open/close, or some connectors are corroded, or.... your main battery is getting too old and weak. Anyway, hook it up to the diagnosis!

+1 For the Arjen's response!
The alarm siren has backup batteries built into it, and if it's 10+ years chances are 99% these batteries leak and cause intermittent alarm issues.
Here, check these two threads:

https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-gen...l-issue-2.html
https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-gen...-facelift.html

Also, since yours is pre-facelift then siren might be different.
Locate the alarm siren part no. (usually engraved right on the alarm siren) and PM me, and I can look up in the EPC for the "latest" part for you

Am I right in thinking the pre facelifts didn't have an alarm as standard because a lot of the cars I looked at didn't have an alarm on them. So maybe they just put an alarm on it from a different Mercedes maybe? . The battery backup for the siren is inside the horn on mine . I haven't cracked it open yet to see the damage the batteries have done but I might take a look later this week. My siren was and is where saltthefries has the metal thing there . Don't think there is anything behind the battery to do with this but I may be wrong . Also the connections are different on yours from what I see in your pictures . Mine was just a plug in connector . So u may have to change the wiring to suit new part if u buy one and u may need the bracket to fix to too. Check up on this because my new siren fitted on the old bracket which looks very different to your metal siren.
Please be aware i only brought my car two weeks ago so i am no expert on these cars . Just trying to keep the bills down . .
On that note would a Mercedes specialist have the equipment to do the star diagnosis? or is it just the big dealers who have them? .
Thanks again Arjen think i may have a little look first at the dome lights first to see if there is anything i can fix myself. Before the big bills start rolling in from M B.
Cheers again

Pre-facelift models might have a different setup. As far as I know pre-facelifts have 2-button remote, whereas post-facelifts have 3-button ones.
The alarm siren on pre-facelifts indeed looks different. I got this part number: A1645420120 It does look like yours. Also, check this one out - 0035426820. Not sure if it's he latest.

Thanks for the help all - unfortunately I can't find the "siren" unit. I've attached photos of what I see when I remove the battery in my pre-facelift R170. I'm beginning to suspect that the siren is behind the mud guard on the passenger side front wheel as in the W203 as in this video -

I do have a two button remote, FYI.

The metal horn I posted photos of yesterday was #65 on the diagram at MB Partsworld below. I'm hunting for #77 as it seems like that's the part with the battery that fails.

Exploring behind the passenger side front wheel shows only the windshield cleaner reservoir. I'll try getting behind the drivers' side another day. It's 110F in Phoenix, so I can only do so much at a time before the heat gets to me. If I do get to the bottom of this, I'll have some photos to share.

As far as I see you've already located your alarm siren under the viper area. Have you tried taking it apart. The batteries should be sitting inside of the alarm siren itself.
You can post your VIN and we'll locate the exact part No. for you and the EPC should show a location of the component; before you take the whole car apart

Here's the VIN: WDBKK47F7WF066134
The part that I took out under the wipers didn't have any battery hazard logos, and the diagrams available on MB Partsworld show that there is another component called the "siren".
The part under the wipers seems pretty inpenetrable, and notably different from the photos in the other two alarm threads you linked to. I doubt that I could disassemble it without destroying it, but I'll look at it again.

I see two numbers on the metal part I pulled: A28657625 and 0035426820 (matches what you referenced earlier).

Can you take a look at that VIN and see if there's any kind of an alarm diagram in WIS / EPC? I should have my own copy of WIS in the near future.

Pulling the wheels isn't such a terrible waste of effort because I had to fix a fog light, and I'll probably rotate my left / right tires next time I mess with my car.
