Left brake light out - bulb is fine

My left brake light is out, but the bulb is not burned out. Changed the bulb anyway. Still doesn't work.

Where else can I look for the problem?

thanks

IIRC, there was a recall on the lamp holder for the tail-light assembly of the R170. The contacts were bad.

Too funny I just posted couple days ago about the same problem. LOL. Left tail lite, replaced bulbs, still nothing. A mechanic buddy told me it might be a bad ground somewhere but after hearing about that recall I'm inclined to just replace the whole thing and see what happens. Good luck. Let me know when you get yours fixed and I'll do the same.

Had the same issue. I didn't want to buy a whole new lamp housing so I pulled the left tail light out and noticed some corrosion on the contact where the bulb was (for me it was the top brake light) so I took the bulb out and sanded the contact on the bulb holder and on the tail lamp assembly. Both contacts are back to natural color and work great! Not sure how long this will last, but I am saving up for some smoked LED tail lights just can't afford to change both housings now!

Depending on the amount of corrosion, rather than sanding, you might just try a pencil eraser. That is sometimes abrasive enough to clean contacts without abrading away material.

Call your local Mercedes dealer and give them your vin # to see if you can get them replaced for free.

There was a recall.

Took out left tail light bulb and noticed (now that you guys said to look for it! thnx) that there was some corrosion on the ground connects! Took a knife and scraped it all off and works fine...for now! So just to be safe I took out all the bulbs and did the same for all of them. Hope this helps!

Is anyone has tried just to change the bulb holder? It should not be very expensive, just a little piece of plastic...

I took a peice of copper wire and stuck it between the contact and the bulb and bent it over the contact, worked like a champ, and held me over till i could get new bulb holders. Thats all it was.

Tried brightening contact and spray with electrical cleaner but still no joy. Odd failure of left light.

Since it's a known problem I suggest pulling both taillights and cleaning the contacts real well and put dielectric grease in the connector.

Thanks for that great suggestion, I was just down at Supercheap and saw a wee sachet of what looks like just the stuff you are mentioning, will apply some and hope it helps.
I got the light working by wiggling the socket with the brakes and ignition on. Used a board jammed between the pedal and seat, as no assistance was around. It seems moving the bulb then powering the circuit doesn't work every time.

Aaaah used to do that with Christmas tree lights when run out of spare bulbs.

Will try that next, meantime wiggling the bulb with power to the circuit did the rick, for now.

I'm with you on saving money, enough spent on this little car already but I still love it,
