Newbie here~!!!

Hey all! I'm gonna be the owner of a 99 slk230 in yellow at the end of summer. I looked around and searched but could not any threads of people who have painted the black underboy trim common on pre-facelift models. Is this possible? I love the amg kit, but don't wanna spend so much on a kit. I think it would look much better, "finished" so to speak if it were body matched. Anyone done this?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome. Good luck with the SLK. Yellow is a great color and I agree with painting the black trim, yellow, if it's possible and you get a good match.

I've seen a few pictures of pre-FL SLK's that have had the side skirts and bumpers painted to match the rest of the car. Personally I won't do it for a few reasons. First, the side skirts turn out OK but you still have a strip of black rubber trim on the lower part of the door panel - to me it look's a bit odd. Second, for the bumpers I haven't seen where the paint on the lower plastic trim has a quality appearence - to me it's looked flat & doesn't look seamless.

Of course it's your car & if you want to then the short answer is "yes, it's been done" & with quite a bit of searching you can find some pics. Might try looking over in benzworld.org. If you do paint the trim please post some before/after pics.

Don't the FL cars still have the black bit at the bottom of the door ?

Yes you are correct. However for some reason in my mind it doesn't the same - I think it's the curve of the side skirts verus the the straight line of the preFL cars that make it look different (just my deformed mindset I guess )

Welcome from Atlanta! I know the Ferrari 348 and Testarossa owners tend to do this with those cars where they paint the bottom black to the body color and it tends to look nice. I think there is a bit of prep work that goes into making it look good though.

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Yellow is hard as heck to find...and I'm glad I was able to find one so well maintained for such a good price. I found some pics of painted ones over on benzworld (thanks dkpnkc!), and saw the black strip between the skirt and door....odd...wonder why it can't be painted...It looks good so far in pics...but I wonder if the quality of the material does lend for an "uneven" blend into the standard painted bumper.

I think its all in the prep work... I have kinda gotten used to mine being black at the bottom... mine is silver... I agree that the AMG boy kit is expensive, but if I was going to make a change, that would be what I would do...
