What to look for when planning to buy a used SLK R170? recommendations appreciated!

Hi there,

I'm new to the SLK domain but planning to trade my alfa romeo 916 spider 3.0 V6 12v for a SLK. My wife fell in love with this car from their launch and they now become in the budget-area where I can consider getting myselve one of those

But before diving into a nightmare, I appreciate all advice that can protect me!

Things I would consider to check when going for any second hand convertible:
- does the roof open/close smoothly?
- is the roof free from leaks?
- is the history of the car known, well cared for, preferably dealer/specialist?
- no major dents/scratches/etc?
- is the ride OK (no major rattles, no pulling to the side when braking, clutch not to heavy, 2nd gear not jumping out, etc.)?
- all electronics ok?
- airco still cold?

but more specifically on the SLK R170...
- is there a belt that requires regular maintenance? what's the interval?
- any maintenance specifically required when exceeding 100k km's?
- anything else to give specific R170 attention to?

Perhaps this advice is allready posted, but I could not find it so all references to top-threads are also highly appreciated!

look forward to share with you my experience in hunting for the best R170 that my budget allows for...

A good rule of thumb is to have the tranny fluid/diff fluid changed if there is more than 60K on the clock, other than that you covered everything in your list. Good luck.

Your check list is good. I would add a few things specific to R-170s:

If it has seat heaters, do they worK?

Check the head liner for any signs of staining (hydraulic fluid from the top mechanism can leak from failing o-rings and stain the head liner)

Is the spare tire inflator in the trunk?

And a few things I like to know any time buying a used car:

Is the performance (engine) of this car as good as others of the same type I have previously driven? Does it feel as tight and solid during the test drive as others of the same type?

Does it start well both when cold and after being warmed up?

Check tires for even wear.

I used to want the owners manual, but it is pretty easy to get a PDF of the owners manual for an SLK, and then you can use your computer to keyword search what you want to look up in your manual.

Apart from the mechanics which have already been covered, you might also want to check the interior for peeling. While searching for my SLK, I noticed that it's a common thing. The paint peals off revealing the underlying black material. Rather ugly I would say. You also have the cup holder that some folks seem to break and which is quite expensive to replace as new (SLKStore).

Although these are not serious stuff, but it might help pushing the price down a bit further if the important things are OK.

Hello, I should add the first question you have to solve : which model ?

You had a ALFA V6 , so I recommand you trying both a 4 cylinder and a V6 ( SLK 320 or 32 AMG ) . . .
and you 'll see your choice definitly going to V6 . . . which also be an after 2000 model ( very important to solve all the previous phase 1 little problems )

Was already considering this question. Currently the 320 / 32 AMG is still out of my budget range. The 200, 200 Kompressor and 230 are quite different in terms of horsepower. Was tempted by the 230 as bhp's are supposed to be equal to my current 3.0 V6. But also learned on this forum that apparently the 230 has some more reliability issues? that surprised me as typically the lower volume engine types tend to have issues sooner as they require more high-rev driving.... ???

You right, the 320 should be a bit more expensive than a 4 cylinders, for an everyday use.

But the music of your ALFA V6 is going to miss you.
on the other hand, I think the 320 should be less expensive to mantain than the ALFA.
Once again, go and ask to drive and test a 320 . . .

( the 32 AMG is much more expensive)

Indeed fell in love with the sound of the V6, especially after mounting the ragazzon SS exhaust system also the 192bhp and torque makes driving pretty comfortable in low rev ranges.

but for now the 320 is still a bit to expensive in the NL's. Perhaps import from germany might be an option. FYI; a nice 320 goes for 13.000+ in the NL's in contrast to 8.500 in Germany

I'll keep you posted!

Yesterday I've driven the 230 kompressor. Performance is quite comparable to the alfa 3.0V6 in terms of bhp and even more torque. Indeed it misses the V6 'roar' and sharp cornering of the spider, but makes up in comfort with full automatic hardtop and german engineering. tempting....

keep looking . . . and try a 320 ,

the V6 melody at 3500 rpm and the torque begining at 1500.

Presently, I'm fighting the ESP/BAS brake light/ K40 relay problem on my 2004 SLK320, so I'd make sure to get a download of the stored error codes. There could be codes stored even tho' there's no indication on the instrument panel.

I've only been dealing with the local dealer, but I've seen elsewhere in this forum that you can get a reader for ~$500. I've also heard some auto parts stores have readers, but haven't looke for this yet.
