1999 SLK 230 - Climate control stuck on recirc air

It seems like the climate system is stuck on recycle regardless of whether I have pressed the recycle button or not. Without A/C, the interior fogs up within 3 minutes of driving even in very dry weather as if air was on recycle (anyone who lives in cold areas will know what I am talking about). The car is not driveable in that condition because of lack of visibility unless A/C is turned back on. With A/C, there is no fogging but it starts to get a musty odor as if the air was on recycle. It doesn't appear that any fresh air is coming in at all. I tried to look for any incoming vents blocked on the outside, but I don't see any problem.

It is moisture, not coolant or oil that is condensing on the windows.

I asked the service department to take a look at this in my scheduled service appointment. Finally, they seem to think that the recirculation flap is stuck in recirc as I had suspected. But they have estimated $600+ just to diagnose the precise problem as to why the flap is stuck behind the dashboard.

Luckily, here in CA Bay Area, I can open the windows or put the top down more so than in the east coast but it is not an option when it is raining and it does get cold or too hot at times.

1. Any ideas on what I can do myself about this?
2. Any recommendations for a good service center in the Bay Area that you would recommend to take a look at this? (Beshoff in SJ is the dealer that has serviced this and they seem to be the most tolerable in this area according to comments. Wouldn't mind an independent service center either)

I'm surprised your Mercedes Benz dealer didn't repare it.
It's quite a known problem.
If the flap doesn't move when you turn the knob on/off , it could be a little air pipe broken or detached behind the dashboard.
It often happens after a new radio installation.

On the other hand, I can't imagine the flap stuck with some leaves
or any object blocked after the air filter . . .

you could find your answer on that link :
