M62 for more power?

Ok so I'm not that mechanically inclined but got a ? for anyone that wants to answer. If I'm correct the SLK230 uses the Eaton M45. Is it possible to put the M62 on there in search of more power? I'm sure a little fabrication work would have to be done and new pulleys but wouldn't that be an easy way to increase power? I dont know much bout supercharged vehicles just want more power from my 03 and runnin out of ideas

What year is your car? The older pre-FL cars like mine have the M62 with a clutch. The newer ones have the M45 with no clutch. I remember Steve was going to do this but I don';t think it ever happened.

Its an 03 slk 230. I'm really just thinking of ways to boost power without doin nitrus or a custom turbo setup ($$$$) and that seemed like a logical step. I've heard of people "porting" their superchargers ailso. Trying to figure out what that involves and if it can ba done to our Mercs.

Its not just the capacity of the blower but more critical the overdrive ratio ie the rotor vs crank speed. First you should confirm that the m45 is running at full allowable rotor speed although it probably is because the m45 is really a bit small and for use on motors upto about 1600cc. M62 certainly has the headroom to give more power. I have extensive experience of the M62 and can say it goes through a critical at 12000rpm so if you want longevity it needs to be run below this rotor speed otherwise you WILL have input shaft failure as i experienced.

Sounds like you've got some experience with these things. So do you think it would be worth the effort and expense to have that m62 fitted? And you talked about it failing after 12,000 rpm so how is it possible to keep it below that speed? I know u can beef up the internals on a turbo but is the same possible with super?

Keeping below 12000 is a question of limiting the overdrive ratio which therefore limits the maximum volumetric flow rate and therefore ultimate power potential. In theory the 12000 resonance can be dealt with but its not easy, I did it by making a one piece input shaft rather than the OEM two piece, this only makes the shaft more tolerant so deals with symptom only. Another good move is to use a fixed belt tensioner rather than spring but then it needs adjusting all the time. The next thing that fails is the manifold. Also the merc M62 may not suffer because its a bespoke unit based on the M62 not a generic M62 like I used.
An M62 maybe worth fitting by retrofitting the earlier mercedes slk arrange
ment but design from scratch wouldnt be worth it imo. I would check your M45 is maxed out first.
