Help ! Intermitent starting problem 1997 slk 200

Hi my first post,.
The scenario is; My Slk will start and run perfectly, and then out of the blue it will not start,It's wierd.
This is what happens when it refuses to start;
I turn off the alarm, insert key turn key in ignition to the spring loaded start position.
No intrumentation or warning lights light up & no buzz sound from the fuel pump It's a no power situation.
I can turn on the headlights turn the key in the ignition there is no click ,no sound at all but the headlights are bright so I presume it's on a seperate power supply .
I have replaced battery.

I have moved the gear lever on the auto trans through it's range of positions, and yesterday It started after doing this, coincidence I don't know ? as the day before when it would not start I pushed car out of Garage and it decided to start .
I have cleaned all battery terminals.

There is an aftermarket alarm fitted ,but has given no probs in the 3 years I have owned it.
Thankfully we have not been stranded, must be a mercedes Angel up there somewhere.
I would appreciate some help.
Cheer
Ian

I think the first thing I'd try is bypassing the aftermarket alarm.

Do the headlights dim when you try to start the car?
yes=low or failing battery (or loose/bad battery connections)
no=no power going to starter (could be the alarm or maybe the ignition switch)

Thanks for your help, due to the headlights not being effected I will search the ignition switch and alarm for some kind of fault. Problem is I have to wait for the next failure because you can't really look for faults when everything is working fine.

Modern carfault finding can seem like a can of worms when it comes to electrics.
I have had probs with my Range Rover battery going flat overnight, since I discconected the remotes receiver it's fine , apparently broadband, old Garage door remotes and anything emitting a wireless transmission on a similer frequency can wake up the BCEM , mine was waking every 20 seconds, I'm wondering that maybe the Mercs ageing electronic technology is being interfered with as both cars developed electrical probs in a similar timeframe.

Hey.. I built me one of those. Just a tad bit older.

It's a 1967 TR6c. It was a 'ground up' built for a driver.

Hi again About my intermitent starting problem, I have the car running again, but am not holding my breath.
I opened the fuse box and checked the relevent fuses that are named in the fuse chart inside the lid of the fusebox.
Now there are 4 fuses at the back of the fuse box 3 of which are 40 amp & one 80 amp I dont know what these fuses are for but pulled them out to check, the fuse at the back of the fusebox closest to the firewall was very corroded and when I tested it for conductivity it wouldnt make the beep sound on my tester also this fuse was very loos when pushed in, I cleaned it up & put a slight bend on one of the fuse terminals to make it fit firmly.
Now can anyone help me with a description as to what these fuses cover ?
Also the fuses located in the side of the dash on the drivers side.
I may be barking up the wrong tree but a sparky told me check connections as the car is old now.

PS Nice Triumphs there, mine is a 2007 Bonnie 900

Have you got an Owners Manual - if not, you can download one from HERE - it will tell you what the various fuses are for. Also, check out THIS thread regarding the K40 relay module - might solve all your problems.

What is the tree behind your pic of the Bonnie - never seen one of those?

I re-built mine about 5 years ago - virtually a brand new bike now apart from cases, barrel and frame - I put a belt primary on it - makes a helluva difference.

Thanks for that, i'll DL it.
The tree is a Rhodadendron.
PS The manual will come in handy, unfortunately it shows me where the fusebox is but not the fuses and their function
Would like to know what the 3x 40 amp fuse & 1 x 80 amp fuse covers.
cheers

Intermitent starting prob solved

I don't know what sorted the problem but ,fingers crossed the fuses I pulled & cleaned seems to have revived the SLK

PS The SLK failed to start again, same symtoms.
Removed underdash panel & side panel, pulled the plug out of back of ignition switch, inspected wiring , found one of the connections of aftermarket alarm to the ignition switch to be faulty.
What lead me to this was that i noticed insulating tape around a wire connection appeared heat damaged.
After removing isulating tape to reveal connection of wires I found them to be just wrapped around eachother and a lot of corrosion within the wires.
I cleaned the wires & soldered them together re wrapped in insulating tape and now the SLK is running & starting like a Mercedes Benz again.
