Try Ebay, that's your best bet.

What would be the best one to go for ?

I would really just like to diagnose problems when the light appears on the dash...

Auto Zone has them from $59 up to $200.
I was looking at them yesterday. I did not catch the brand names. They keep them behing the counter.

FYI--- SLK230 code reader plug is under dash just behind the hood release. Take off plastic cover to access the plug.

I'm afraid generic OBD code readers are next to useless for our cars. Don't waste your money. I would suggest getting a dedicated reader from like carsoft with a multiplexer. It is more expensive but will surely pay for itself. More info can be found here:

Has anyone tried the Equus 3130 live data OBDII code reader on the R170? I am considering buying one but not sure if it will read the codes or record live data...

So you were trying to tell us that the code reader depends on the brand and price? the higher the price the more functions and codes it gives? or it depends on the user's technical capabilities? I was also eyeing on buying one scantool code reader..thanks for the inputs?

From what I've learned so far, the price of an OBDII (or OBDI) code reader is dependant upon the features you want such as live data recording, back lighting, freeze framing, on board most likely problems associated to the diagnostic code (rated hightest to lowest) that was read, and ABS problem codes. Some have a book with code definitions per vehicle. Others have CDs or you just go online to the mfrs. website to decifer the codes. Some use serial ports to upload to a PC to use in a report or graphic display, others use USB connectors. Some also allow downloading newest firmware when updates are available. I myself am confused about statements indicating a standard OBDII code reader is useless on our Mercedes cars considering the world standard is OBDII or CAN. If they are useless then Mercs standard would not be OBDII it would be proprietary. Is that what I am hearing out there? Or is there minimum info available about the codes that ARE read? Pls someone enlighten us....

yes...that is a good intro to how the readers work. Recommend it to anyone thinking of one. My concern is the propriety of the Merc codes though and if the 3130 would have any trouble reading them and/or decifering what the trouble may be.

So far I have only been reading missed fire codes. There may be better units around that cost more but the 3130 is good enough in terms of price and features. However it does not read ABS and transmission codes.

Thanks...are you able to see/read live data from your SLK or just that code?

Live data, custom live data, record live data, trigger on DTC, etc. all there on the display. I connect the unit everytime I drive and I can set it to trigger on dtc or just read live data.

Great...Is there enough info about the SLK DTCs either with Equus on the CD, online, or other sources? Thanks Mantist.

I have a Actron CP9180 AutoScanner and I can read codes and some live data from the system. There are generic things like coolant temperature that can be read, but things like transmission fluid temperature can not be read by this generic scanner.

The codes are in the Chrysler Crossfire manual if you have access to one.
