slk 230: Use of manual key won't open door

Hi from a new UK member. I have recently acquired my 1998 SLK 230. Central locking works fine using both the remote and the in-car c/l switch but the key will not lock or unlock the doors when used manually. The lock barrel turns freely (and soundlessly) through a quarter turn in either direction but that's about it. I'm worried that should either the battery or a component of the system fail, I'll find myself locked out! Only other possible clues(?): boot locks reliably with key, new MB 74 Ah battery fitted by an independent specialist a couple of weeks ago and the car has a Scorpion alarm, the mysteries of which I have yet to explore. The boot is completely dry. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Free, silent and quarter turn are normal. My remote is broken so I have to open my car manually until I cough up the Ł170 that MB want for a replacement.
RHD drive car its turn key towards the front of the car to unlock if that helps any. Note that the key itself will only unlock the drivers door, not trip the central locking. Watch for the little pin popping up rather than listening for central locking.

Good Luck and let us know how you get on

Thanks Ady. No, the little pin doesn't pop up, though it's useful to know that the lock activates the driver's door only; I thought that it would lock/unlock both doors with an accompanying hiss of the vacuum pump in the boot. Does this mean that manual locking is a strictly mechanical rather than electronic/vacuum controlled process e.e that there may be a mechanical linkage fault in my mechanism?

Just been out to the car to check...
Yes, definitely mechanical - I can turn the pin down/up a little at a time with the key rather than it either being locked or unlocked.

Hope this helps

That's a great help Ady. Thanks. Common sense would suggest that it must be a simple mechanical device; there would be little point in an 'emergency' entry system which involves electics and a potentially dead battery! I've just been out to the garage and wiggled the key round as you did. I can detect the slightest movement in the door button when I turn the key but it doesn't pop up. Suggests a simple mechanical failure to me. We shall see. I have in the meantime rigged up a temporary lead which is accessible from outside the car so that should the battery drain, I can at least charge it to open the locks via central locking. Bit chilly working outside today!

An update. My local indie specilist took a look at the lock recently. The manual key operation is strictly mechanical; there is no electonics or vacuum involvement and a plastic component within the driver's door lock had failed. A new lock was ordered and an appointment was made to instal it. In the event, this was problematic; the plastic moulding of the new lock was quite visibly different from that of the old one so that correct alignment was impossible. After a long and valiant struggle on the part of the frustrated technician, a composite of the new locking mechanism and the old plastic casing was installed as a temporary 'get me home' measure. Another lock is now on order. I can't fault the indie for their efforts, but I and they are really disappointed that the new lock casing simply didn't fit. Fingers crossed that the second new lock will be a better fit than the first!
