There are several posts about oil usage, but I don't specifically recall one about the 320. Seems like most of them were for the 350. Dan may know if the 350 is close enough to the 320 to induce similar problems. I'll copy a few of the threads below, just for reference. It might be a good place to start...

I never had to add oil between services on my 320.

I do an intermediate service every 6000 miles.

anyway, don't fill to much, it's worse to overfill , it could really destroy the engine.

I'm not a 100% sure about the 320 but pull the spark plug wires and see if there is any oil in the well, some times the oil seal on the valve cover's can go bad.

I am doing an oil consumption test now, mechanic replaced oil and wants me to drive 300 plus miles and bring it back to monitor oil consumption.

thanks for all the replies

350 Oil thread number 2

Thanks i was just looking at those threads on benzworld, forgot to mention my car is 2001 slk 320 with 91,000 miles i just bought it used and have no history of service. I just hope i am not looking at a engine rebuild this soon but i understood the risk of buying a used benz the car drives amazing and so far runs great

I have seen problems posted about the 320 using exessive amounts of oil after a dealer oil change????? some claimed to have done oil changes themselves and problem of excessive oil usage ended, dont get that one

anyway thanks everyone and not ready to give up on my slk yet

Results from my mechanics oil consumption test on my 320..... so far after driving 300 plus miles oil consumption is fine, no leaks and doesnt seem to be burning oil he wants to see my car again in about 3 weeks to check again i have no idea after my last oil change prior to this one why i needed to add 2.5 quarts after about a month of driving? maybe different filter this time or a trainee did the oil change last time or something is sticking inside the engine causing oil blow out??? or maybe i drove it too hard having fun is it possible if high revs or high speeds to burn that much oil, seems like everyone seems to feel the 320 engine is very reliable and efficent. i did hear of some recalls of newer 350 engines that consume excessive amounts of oil. will keep you posted after a few more weeks if it starts using alot of oil again

thanks for all the feedback really helps!

Have you pulled the plastic pan cover off the bottom yet. Might have a leak. What kind of oil do you use?

Oil leaks from the PCV vent housing and oil level sensor are pretty common on this engine. You may want to check both of them.

If the engine oil is changed via the drain plug, I would ask if the copper washer is replaced at each oil change. per is soft but work hardens easily so it would make a good seal the first time. The seal won't be so good if the washer is reused. If the plug was leaking, I would expect to see oil under the car when it was parked.

My 320 does not burn any oil.

2 months, 3 quarts? Seems like there should be big puddle somewhere. I would guess that they didn't fill it properly the first time. Did you actually check it when you first got it back from them?

UPDATE:
during the oil consumption test found out to have multiple problems used almost all the oil in about 1,700 miles not good! also began to notice slight leakage under car. took it in today and my mechanic found leaks in the valve cover he replaced gasket problem seems to be solved thats the good news. he changed plugs and said its burning oil he added some sort of engine flush added a thicker grade synthetic and told me to hope for the best. He said my solution if it continues to burn oil is to sell the car, he claims its too expensive to rebuild engine about $4,000 and would not be worth the cost! if anyone has any ideas if the worst is true? but i am hoping for the best and the work he did will hold out for some time the car has 97,000 miles and honestly it drives real strong and seems reliable except for the oil problem : (

thanks

320 SLK Oil Use

Eeww, scaring me. Had my 320 since Christmas (123,000miles) and was suprised by how much oil I've had to top up the engine with. It blows no smoke and no oil drips on the garage floor. Engine bay is spotless so any leaks should be obvious. What I want to know is where is the oil going?
Does the synthetic oil get consumed with minimal smoke?

I've also noticed that the engine is a bit noisy / rattly for about 1 to 2 seconds when you first start it from a cold start. I've assumed this is just the oil getting pumped up to the top of the engine, but is more pronounced than on other cars I've had. Have you noticed anything similar?

Welcome
I wish I could help you more but seems like I am also frustrated with oil consumption my mechanic gave my car consumption test and after 1000 miles it used almost all the oil, ouch! He also fixed a small leak at the valve covers but it's still using alot of oil, he suggested if it's burning oil and needs a 4000 dollar rebuild, sell it! Not what I wanted to hear. For now I just keep adding synthetic heavyest grade and drive it. My car runs amazing for 100,000 miles has plenty of power and I do t have the noise you describe at cold start. I have heard rumor about dealer oil filters and some have changed oil themselves and oil usage stopped? Also I can't see any blue exahust just some Black residue at tail pipe but people say that's more a result of gasoline so like you I have no idea where the oil goes? I am also frustrated since I just got my 320 in October and love the car mine is a 6 speed manual and hard to find a stickshift. Let me know if you find anything out

thanks and welcome from LA!

We've found the majority of the oil usage problems to be associated with a small leak in the rear of the engine right near the trans (you won't see it unless you are looking), the upper valve cover gaskets, and the O-rings not sealing properly on the oil filter cap. I also recommend (as does MB now) Mobil 1 5w-40 instead of the 0w-40, this is a slightly thicker grade oil and will help limiting oil loss.

The rebuild on these engines is not costly (I've done a few), unless they hit you with a Mercedes owner tax. Usually bearings and rings are the only parts that need replacing. There are very few true gaskets on the engine with the exception of head gasket, intake and exhaust manifolds, and EGR and AIR valves. All other gaskets are applied with a silicon bead.

I would do an overall inspection of all the sealed areas to determine if anything is seeping through. If that all checks out then look into the bigger ticket items.

Turns out after driving the car for the last couple of months have seen minimal oil consumption. Not sure why the initial oil use, maybe initial checks were not on sufficiently level ground or too soon after engine was run.
