Transmission Dipstick - SLK320

I just purchased a 2004 SLK320 and wanted to check the Transmission fluid level. I bought the transmission dipstick specified for the car but it is far to long, and bottoms out at the base of the tube I assume (seems to be a generic length so it can be used on all models). I was curious if anyone had the measurements for the length so I know how far to push it into the transmission tube. Measurement from the top of tube entry to bottom of measurement area would be awesome.
Thanks

Thanks so much for the link. I did several searches but did not find what you sent. I could feel the dipstick hitting something, assume now it was the bottom of the pan as stated in the link, just did not know that this was correct. Thanks again, going now to update my cpuser stuff as requested.

Can anyone help on this. I have purchased the dipstick with the plastic measure section on the bottom but difficult to know how far to push it in. If I push it as far as it can go, the level is much too high - off the scale - even at less than 25°C. Thanks. Richard

Because the search results are from benzworld.org not slkworld.com

The “dipstick” you purchased isn’t actually a dipstick, it’s simply a tool used to check the fluid level then the plastic cap is reinstalled with a new red lock clip. They are purposely long so they can be used with several different models. I know this probably isn’t what you were hoping to hear but that’s the way it is. MB made these cars with a “sealed for life” transmission, it wasn’t until years later they realized that wasn’t a good idea. Make sure when you check the fluid level that the transmission is warmed up to operating temperature and the vehicle is running. You should drive the car for 15-20 minutes to bring it up to the proper temperature. Also I should mention, you do not want to force it all the way in, just stop when it makes contact with the bottom of the pan. You will have several inches of the tool still exposed, this is perfectly normal.

The whole sealed for life thing was a joke. How long does one define "life" when it comes to transmissions? Until they blow up? The fluid becomes tar? The inference owners were to draw was that they would never need servicing but that was and is a bunch of hooey.
The ECT is known to leak. Seals fail and fluid ages in use.

My memory is that they actually rescinded that whole idea a couple of years into the G5 and made service intervals 40000 miles.
Think about it. For about $300 you get a new filter, a look at the pan and magnet (if equipped) or a chance to lay one in the pan and 8.5 quarts of fresh AT fluid. If the ECT is seeping it should be replaced because the AT will dissolve the insulation on the wiring and if it shorts you likely will blow it and/or the ECU.
Cheap worry free maintenance. Some things are just not worth the effort just to save a few bucks when you can avoid bigger buck issues. Just sayin'

Ya, the idea that the fluid would last the lifetime of the vehicle was mind blowing, my car has 116000 miles on it and the fluid came out looking like used motor oil. It has clearly never been changed before.
