Rattling when slowing down, but disappears when accelerating

I know rattling in a car can be a million things. I took it to two mechanics and they both said it could be the timing chain or a valve that lets out extra power that the car doesn't use because its slowing down.

The rattling occurs when slowing down but disappears when completely stopped.

The car is at 110,000 miles. Is a timing chain replacement due anyway? How much does it cost?

By the way, my check engine light is on. I took it to my mechanic he said it was the air pump that the epa mandates be put in a car and that its not worth fixing.

It only does it in drive.

if i'm not mistaken there is a valve for the air pump that may do that.

Spend the $150 at the mb dealership and let them diagnose and provide part numbers. At least this way it could save you the problem of a longer term solution.
