License Plate Bulb Replacement

Can someone please help me to replace a licence plate bulb.
I`ve been told to do it from the inside but I don`t want to damage anything.
Some pics or a video may help as well.
Seasons greetings to one and all.

Until a r170 owner responds, owner's manual does not cover it?

Hi there!

You do not have to replace them from the inside. Its 2 screws on each plastic cover to the left and right of the license plate. At least thats the way it is in the US. This would also be a good time to look into no fault LED replacements.

What is this stud

I`ve managed to release the obstinate bolts on the right and left hand side of this unit but there is this silver stud in the middle which I don`t know how I can release.
Please can I have some more help to complete the bulb change.

My thanks to slk320chick for the help and the pics.
Her is my pic to help to understand what I`m asking.
Regards to all,
Martyn

Sorry the pic has disapeared. I`m chasing it up.
There is a silver stud in the middle of the light nacelle holding the whole assembley in (or seems to be)

Yes lets see what you mean? There are silver prongs holding each side of my bulbs in place, then the bulb just comes out itself by pulling slightly.

Not that

I haven`t got that far yet.
On the outside exactly in the middle of the 2 screws there is a silver stud that appears to be holding the cover in place and I can`t see how to remove it.

Mensra..............if you judge it to be the same perhaps you could help with the removal of the light cover after unscrewing the bolts.
Thanks for the input.

IIRC it is also different for UK-spec. R171 as far as the rear license plate illuminators are concerned, it requires an approach from the inside of the trunk/boot lid and involves removal of the inner plastic trim of the trunk/boot lid.

Thanks etyu

This is what I thought from previous research.
I`ve looked on the inside and was baffled by the peculier clips holding the cover on. Any idea how to get the inside cover off without damage to it.

Try the links found in LiveFree's signature: https://www.slkworld.com/new-members-...ml#post1083153

Got any good photos of the clips-of-interest? Commonly with MB they are compression type plastic anchors. In the R171, one uses a small flat head screwdriver to lift the central "pin", this releases the compression and the rest can be lifted straight out.

Try a search of the install of the R171 3rd brake light to get an idea.

Done............with problems

I`ve managed to remove the internal studs see pic.
Quite easy really but the fitting of the bulb was finicky and I think I fused it when fitting because they are both out now.
I`m gonna leave it for a while as I got a little frustrated.
At 67 years old I don`t find it to much fun sat in the boot in the freezing cold.
I`ll get back later.

The removal of the internal plate is done by removing the centre pin then the outside retainer I used the shown special tool to perform this stage of the process thereby not doing any damage.
All I gotts do now is find where the appropriate fuse is.
Happy New year to all.

All done .....I must have fused the bulbs/lamps when I was messing about.

A bit concerned as the problem only arose because one of the bulbs/lamps was out. Both are working now so my concern is what caused the faulty connection. Maybe the future will reveal all.

My thanks to Jeff~~~~Gbarringer100~~~~~and leapyfish~~~~~Eddy~~~~~slk320chick

Happy New Year to all
