I have a 2001 230K and over a period of time my roof has begun to stick on opening.
It tries to disengage but cannot, I can just ease the roof from the inside and it retracts correctly. It is more noticable in hot weather when the car black roof / seal can get too hot to touch.
It feels more like the seals are sticking together rather than the locks not releasing- is there an easily obtainable lube to apply?
First thing is to get some good silicone spray and spray every hinge you can find for the roof and boot/trunk including the two small plastic rollers where the roof meets the top of the windscreen.
Hello. recently had a similar problem with my 2001 SLK320. I got some `Gummi Pflege` and gave all the rubber seals a good coating, much better all round !! Regards Damian.
Happens to me as well...especially if its hot...its normal....if your car sits on 90 degree hot weather for hours and u decide to open to top,it will stick....
I am also gonna get the "gummi pflege" which means by the way " Rubber Care "
Andrew, I've got the same problem, boot comes up but roof won't disconnect from the windscreen when it's hot. When it cools down, then there is no problem. Did the car KY fix it?
I bought some of the rubber treatment from Ebay, but it did not improve things.
Then one day it stuck with the boot / trunk open and would not unlatch or re-latch and I was alone so could not hold down the switch and pull the roof with both hands.
So in deseration I sprayed everything I could see with WD40. All joints, rolers and inside the latches (with the extension tube on the WD40 can).
This freed up and opened the roof.
I stopped the operation and again soaked everything in the oil, including wiping the seals with a rag soaked in it.
It has now been 2 months opening it at least once per day and sometimes several times and it works perfectly. (touch wood).
Hope this is of assistance.
Andrew
Cheers Andrew, done much the same thing with mine; the locking mechanism all looked really dry so I've given it a good greasing. Just need the sun to come out now to see if it's done the trick.
Best way to lube the roof mechanism and seals is to use the same stuff MB does, Krytox 110 GPL. It's expensive, but it's what they spec.
For the seals, an alternative is Gummi Pfledge Stick, and I suspect white lithium would work fine for the mechanical bits.
I've stuck with Krytox on both of mine, and had zero roof or seal problems. The '55 is one of the quietest SLK's I've ever been in, and it's a 2005. I spent quite a bit of time when I first got it cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting.
I contacted Dupont, who make Krytox... they don't recognise the code 110. Krytox oils go from 100 - 107, greases from 200 upwards. Are you sure about that code?
damn...I see a 210, 205, 223, 225, 226, and 105....but no 110. And you are right...they are anywhere between $72/2oz. tube, up to $223/8 oz tube...WOW....
According to the guy from the UK distributor, the product we need is GPL105 - industry standard anti-squeak lubricant.
Apparently Jeremy Stevens, the technical director of the MB owners club did an article on it in April's edition.
To confirm, this is something to go on the rubber seals to stop the creaking noise when driving down bumpy roads, it's not for lubricating the hood mechanism itself.
It's supplied in a 30ml squeezy bottle at £37 + £3.50 for P+P (including vat) in the UK and can be ordered by contacting www.gbrtech.co.uk or calling 0118 9820567
Just read the review, it sounds like the stuff. Mr Stevens says that the rubber should be thoroughly cleaned with methylated spirits before application, and that care should be taken to make sure it doesn't go on anything else because it's a bugger to get off. Dupont's own tests have show that 4 years after a single application virtually the same quantity of the wonder goo still remained - one application should do you for years. Perhaps one of us should buy a tube then post it round all the other UK users?
good deal chevytriker! that's a lot better than the prices i have been seeing for krytox products...damn the dupont markup...lol...but that's good to know that one application should provide years of quiet....and minimize the effects of cowl shake...
Hey guys, where did you buy the Krytox GPL 105 from, or a similar Krytox lubricating oil product to use for rubber seals? All I could find was a 5KG Krytox container which costs thousands...
"MB rubber seal lubricant A000 989 36 60 is around $35 USD/oz IIRC. ($31.88 at getmercedesparts)"
