Supercharge

I have been driving on my SLK for more than 10 years but never heard the supercharge kick in (or kicked in but not knowing it). Does supercharge only kick in at 3000 RPM or higher?

RE: Supercharger - Working???
Try reving it to 2500+ RPM then let go of the gas, you should hear a click from the bypass valve and check if the clutch on the supercharger is working.

try google

Is your car pre- or post facelift?
Pre facelift has a magnetic clutch which engages the supercharger at around 2000 rpm if there is no load on the engine (revving in neutral). With load on engine (ie in drive) the clutch engages much sooner (less than 1000 rpm)

The post facelift has no clutch on the supercharger which is hence always engaged.

Hope this helps

Thank you jbanks, spclk and raindog,

My slk230 is 2001 and I assume it is a post facelift. Next time when I take the car out on the highway, I will pay more attention to see when the supercharge kicks in.

My 2001 is post facelift (vin=1F202536) and there is no clutch on the SC pulley. It is bolted right to the end of the SC shaft. Check out the end of the pulley. I don't think you'll find a clutch there. That's the best way to find out if it is running all the time or not.
