Crankshaft Position Sensor DIY

Recently I was having problems with my car starting when it was hot. The internet let me know that one possible issue was the crankshaft position sensor.

http://mbworld.org/forums/slk32-amg-...-when-hot.html

This link was EXTREMELY helpful for the DIY and saved me a few hundred bucks. A few warnings:
  • Get all of the E-Torx sockets ahead of time, they were really hard to find in the Miami area.
  • Wear mechanic's gloves if you can, this might not be that helpful with feel, but I absolutely shredded my hand.
  • It may be worth having both a short and long-handled socket wrench, as this is a hard to reach area.
  • You definitely want a screwdriver-style wratchet for removing the bolt holding the sensor in place, also, have a good supply of small and large extensions.
  • The instructions say not to remove the shield next to the sensor. I disagree. It is much easier to remove the shield and it isn't that difficult to get it off and back on, just keep your hand on the bolts!

Two weeks later, I haven't hard the start issue once. So hopefully it is resolved. I hope it isn't bad form to post a link from another forum on here, but this was extremely helpful and I thought I'd share it.

Mexico

Yeah man, I'm going to be in Mexico for some well-deserved vacation on those dates so I can't make it. As much as my girl loves Orlando, I doubt she'd look too kindly over my canceling Mexico for a trip up north.

Are there many guys from this forum in the Miami area?

I appreciate the invite though. How often do you all meet up per year?

Crankshaft Position Sensor

Does anyone know if the CPS is the same for an AMG 32 as it is for my '01 SLK 320?
I'm pretty sure I need to change mine but wanted accurate instructions

only way to make sure is to get your vin and the vin of a 32 and compare the part numbers from epc. so get both vins and post em and we can see

I have MY 320 VIN, but I was just looking around here and saw someone had posted an excellent link about replacing their's.
I believe his car was an '01 or '02, but it was also the 32 AMG.
I was just wondering if the AMG mods changed anything around significantly from the two CPS locations/access, etc.

Location of CPS

I know some of the components for the 320 and the 32 aren't the same, but being as it is the same engine overall, just with forged and hand built components, I think it would be a safe bet to think the CPS was located in the same place, otherwise that's a lot of pointless engineering costs for mercedes for something that isn't really taking up much space or near the supercharger.

If you follow the DIY it should be pretty easy to tell whether or not it's there. There's a small shield right on the bell housing behind the engine that protects the cable going to the sensor. If it's there in the same location, and you should be able to SEE it, then I'd say go for it.

That being said, the part is like 50 bucks, and good indy SHOULD be able to replace it in less than half an hour, so if they're honest, it shouldn't cost you too much over an additional 50 to get it done professionally, and after doing it myself, I'd say it was probably worth it. You'd probably SAVE money, if you don't already have the tools like the Torx sockets and etc. Also, I destroyed my hands doing it. I'd ask your indy first.

DIY is great and gives a sense of empowerment, but isn't always practical.

Cheers!
Martin

You could also just get the part number using your VIN and then do a search on the EPC to see what other cars that part number fits.

Thanks for this post. I used the link you provided to do the job myself. I also found the following tutorial for crossfires, but it had a few more pictures and more information.

https://howtune.com/articles/152-rep...sler-crossfire

One thing that annoyed me though was that the pictures didn't make it clear to me where exactly the sensor was. I've taken my own pictures to hopefully make it a little more clear.

crankshaft position sensor SLK32 - Album on Imgur

These pictures were taken from the driver-side, looking from the back to the front of the car. The red circle shows the sensor covered in a fabric tube. The second is a zoomed in picture of the same, and the third is what the uncovered sensor looks like.

I'm not convinced that unplugging the battery is necessary, but I did that anyhow.

I was able to remove the clip/wire easily, and I had a hard time accessing the bolt underneath. I ended up using a screwdriver. I did drop the bolt, but the magnetic wand saved my butt once again. Replacement was easy and I put a dab of blue locktite on the bolt when screwing it back in.

Finally, the recommended part from Bosch is 0 261 210 170, but the number on my removed sensor is different. I'm sure it's fine though. It's the right OE according to autohaus. http://www.autohausaz.com/pn/0261210170

The symptoms that led to me replacing my crankshaft position sensor was random stalling and not restarting. I was driving 10 mph and the car stalled. It took me a few minutes to restart, and once it finally did, I had a check engine light. This fault also made my car not start cold a couple times. I read the code and I had a "P2034-008: L5 (Crankshaft position sensor) P0335."

Confirming the part number for a R170 2001 SLK320 crankshaft position sensor is 003-153-28-28

Can't confirm for SLK32 though, but likely the same.

Thanks for the tips! My car stalled today and the computer said it's the crank sensor, so I'm going to replace it this Wednesday (or at least try to).
