SmartTOP Installation Steps with Pictures

My install of a Smart Top in a 2001 SLK 230 Kompressor

First was to go to my Mercedes Dealer and get my radio code prior to disconnecting the battery!!!

Ok..now we can disconnect the battery!

With battery disconnected, I removed the fuse box cover as well as the cover on the black box next to battery.

Next I removed the top of the fuse block as described in the directions. This has to come out to access the 4 terminal lugs where you need to attach the relay harness too.

You can now see the four 'lugs' near the firewall inside the fuse box.

Ok here is the entire kit..We will first install the RELAY HARNESS in the fuse box

First thing that had to be done was to remove the lead on the second from right lug that goes to FUSE 7 on the fuse block. This is going to now get placed on the first lug on the right. Also on that first lug you will place the PINK wire that comes off the relay onto that lug. Replace nut and tighten.

Now remove the nut on the Third lug from the right and place the PAIRED red wires from the relay onto that stud. Place nut back on and tighten. Check all lugs that they are tight at this time..we are all done back there!!

So now you should have a relay with 3 wires coming out of it attached to TWO separate lugs.

There is a long BLACK control wire we need to get over to the black control box next to the battery.

There is a rubber grommet in the front of the fuse box I removed and cut and sliced the end to feed this wire thru. Once I had the grommet back installed into the fuse box I placed some black RTV where the wire comes thru to ensure a watertight seal.

Now I installed the grommet back into the fuse box

Secured all wires and placed top back on fuse box.

Now I had to route the black trigger wire over to the black box next to the battery. I followed the harness that exists the fuse box cause a good portion of it actually goes to that black box! I just used some black tie-wraps and secured the trigger wire about every 10" til I got to the black box.

Ok now we focus attention on the black box!!!

The directions that you follow from Smart Top are really good..never had to doubt what they were saying to do. I'm not going to go step by step, but give you an overview of what goes on in this box for hooking up the module.

just to clarify one point in the instructions from Mods4cars , when in stage 13 it makes a reference to connecting to a cable " before the cut " this means the part of the cut cable still connected to the ECU connector and the reference " after the cut " means the part of the cut cable that goes of into the cars wiring loom " .

First thing that needed to be done was to remove the large electrical connector from this box to gain access to the underside to view the wire numbers associated with each pin location.

Now the next step is to take your time to locate the color coded wore associated with the pin location of this connector. By following along in the modules directions it goes pretty quick..just take your time!!

Once each wire is identified, you will crimp on a "wire tap"...in the end you will have 11 of these "red" taps done and a mess that looks like this! LOL

Once the taps are all done there are two connections you need to cut. On two wires you will have installed two taps next to eachother..you will cut the wire between them to separate them from eachother. The directions are very clear on this so don't worry!!!

Now it is time to install the wiring harness that goes from all these taps to the Smart Top module. Once again, take your time and follow along with the directions!

Here is a pic before all the wires were secured:

Once everything is all connected, you can reinstall that large connector that we took off (just reverse how the directions said to remove). Then I took a couple tie-wraps and secured the Smart Top harness to the existing car harness.

From there the directions have you reconnect the battery and watch that the LED on the module blinks about 2x's every second. If it does your pretty much ready to rock and roll. Put the cover back on the black box and enjoy all the benefits of the Smart Top!!

Here's a few vid's

This one is the initial test in the garage via key remote:

Now driving down the street:

Smile Just installed a SmartTop

I agree with your DIY write up it really isn't very difficult.
I used the directions supplied by Mods4cars, took my time and made sure I was connecting to the correct wires.

The only thing I'm having issues with is getting the timing down for pressing the remote unlock 3x to lower the top. Half the time it only lowers the door windows.

I think it's one of the best mods for the $.

As long as the cadence is equidistant (in time) with each press & release, it should work.

Try: 1-and-2-and-3,

pressing and releasing immediately the desired button on the key fob on the numbers count. Do not mind the alert lights or the chirps (especially with the R171, where the locking is 3 chirps on each press of the lock button).

Master Sarge Sir of course has no problem with cadence, he has lots of practice

Programming R170 from Mods4cars:

Detailed function description (* = Factory setting)
Function 1 - Main Switch - Workshop and Diagnostics ( 0=OFF / *1=ON / 2=DELAY )
The module can quickly and easily be enabled and disabled using this function. It acts like a master switch. When disabled, the module becomes completely inactive and behaves as if it was not installed.
Setting 0 disables the entire module while keeping all other function settings intact. This allows turning the module off and back on without the need to reconfigure all of the other user configurable settings.
Setting 2 is like setting 1 (Module enabled) but additionally the radio and windows will continue to work for about 3 min after the ignition is turned off (and before any door is opened).

IMPORTANT: In order to avoid problems with diagnostic tools and to avoid confusion or injury by unexpected top movement, we urge you to ALWAYS DISABLE the module before taking the car to a shop or lending it to a third person! If problems with the top arise while the module is installed, ALWAYS contact Mods4Cars first at www.mods4cars.com. NEVER take the car to a dealer without getting support first!

Function 2 - One-Touch top operation ( 0=OFF / *1=ON WU / 2=ON WD / 3=EXT WU / 4=EXT WD )
This function enables one-touch console switch operation, for which the window position after top open as well as an optional extended convenience mode can be programmed.
Setting 1 is standard one-touch mode with windows up (WU) after top open. Setting 2 is standard one-touch mode with windows down (WD) after top open. Settings 3 and 4 (extended) are the same as 1 and 2, but additionally it is possible to turn off the ignition and pull the key while the top still continues.
Settings 3 and 4 require extra responsibility and caution to avoid injury by moving top parts to passengers not expecting the top to continue running after the engine is turned off!

Top operation with the console switch:
Holding down the switch (>2 sec) in either direction will operate the top in manual mode for as long as the switch is held.
Tap open once to open the top and bring the windows into the selected position (WU=Windows Up, WD=Windows Down).
Tap open twice slowly to open the top and bring the windows into the opposite position this one time (Down on settings 1 and 3, Up on settings 2 and 4).
Tap open twice quickly to open the windows
Tap close once to close top and windows.
Tap close twice slowly to close only the top and leave the windows open.
Tap close twice quickly to close the windows
Tap the console switch in any direction to interrupt an ongoing operation at any time - even if the top was started by remote!

Comfort close for all windows:
Tap the top close switch when the top is already closed to roll all windows up.

Function 3 - Remote Control ( 0=OFF / *1=ON WU / 2=ON WD / 3=EXT WU / 4=EXT WD )
This function allows full automatic top operation with the original remote fob by pressing the lock and unlock buttons.
Also here it is possible to determine (independently from operation via the center console switch) the position of the windows after opening the top.
Setting 1 is standard remote mode with windows up (WU) after top open. Setting 2 is standard remote mode with windows down (WD) after top open. Settings 3 and 4 (extended) are the same as 1 and 2, only that it is possible to turn the ignition on and start the engine while the top still continues. Additionally getting out of the car and locking the doors by remote will not interrupt an ongoing top operation.
Settings 3 and 4 require extra responsibility and caution to avoid injury by moving top parts, as locking the (previously unlocked) doors with the remote will not stop the top!

Top operation with the remote fob:
Tap UNLOCK on the remote 2x (in 1 sec intervals) to open all windows.
Tap UNLOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to open the roof.
Tap UNLOCK on the remote 4x (in 1 sec intervals) to open the roof and leave windows up.
Tap LOCK on the remote 2x (in 1 sec intervals) to close all windows.
Tap LOCK on the remote 3x (in 1 sec intervals) to close roof and windows.
Tap LOCK on the remote 4x (in 1 sec intervals) to close roof and leave windows down.
Tap any direction to stop an ongoing operation. To stop the top in extended mode in any door lock state, tap the same direction twice!

Function 4 - Maximum allowed speed for top operation ( *0=0kmh / 1=10kmh / 2=20kmh / 3=30kmh / 4=40kmh / 5=50kmh / 6=60kmh)
Setting the max allowed speed for top operation in steps of 10km/h (~7mph). Setting 0 only allows roof operation while halted.
WARNING: Once the top is started within the programmed speed limit, it will continue running, even if the speed later exceeds the limit during the top operation!

Function 5 - Chirps ( *0=OFF / 1=Lock Chirp )
This function can be set to chirp the internal alarm siren briefly when locking the vehicle.
IMPORTANT: This feature requires the factory alarm system with "panic" button on the remote fob to work correctly.

well don't forget that the instructions are in kmh, so convert to mph. and stay away from bumpy roads and railroad tracks when putting it up and down

Does anyone have any problem installing this on their R170? I have it in and the light "green" is blinking. The hardtop manually is in/op I don't see the red light coming on at all. Wire 56 (blue/green) ABS PULSE there's only one instead of 2. The installation wasn't too bad, but I don't think I'm rushing it. I did change the setting on function 4 to 6 on the part converting from km to mph, there's no drop down window for that. Any help is greatly appreaciated.

Wires 56 and 74 get two taps each, you have to cut between them. Did you do that?

I hope this isn't a silly question, but how do you disable the smart top? Can you hit a button combination on your fob or do you have to plug it into a computer and use the software?

I am just trying to figure everything out before I have this installed.

I'd say the easiest way is just to plug it into the computer and set the corresponding function to 0 (off).
