Fixed em!

Same day, took both fobs apart one at a time, did all you said to do and bam… Signal from inside the house! Works like charm! All my 13 year old fobs needed were a brake-down, good cleaning and like new again. Now I’m going to cancel the 380 buck appointment for next Monday and purchase some new fob shells with the Mercedes emblems. If you were close buy I would treat you and your significant other to dinner on me. Thanks a million!

Excellent post. I just bought a 2002 R170. It only came with one key and the part where you attach it to a key ring is broken. I really don't want to spend $245.00 just so I can hang my key on my key ring. Now I don't have to. Thanks!

Just to add: Last week my 2005 keyfob went through the washer and half through a drying cycle before I realized where it was. Took it apart and removed batteries and left it on a desk for 3-4 days and today tested and everything worked.

Wow! Thanks. Comprehensive.

Found this after looking for ways to put a new cover on my MB's key fob. I think I got the correct fob cover for my SLK 230. (Has lock and unlock and panic buttons only.) Told by a local M-B mechanic, I could either swap the actual double-sided key part, using itty-bitty drift pins to take mine out and put it in the new fob....then swapping the guts out (per your fine instructions!)...OR I could go to a locak key shop who apparently can cut the new fob key blank and then I still have to swap the guts. Still deciding which to do...but I will do one or the other. My 2003 fob has the Panic button totally worn off. Again, thanks.

Only been a member for a couple of days, but already thankful for the forum. Changed the key fob case today as the old one was knackered, and would never have realised that there was a seperate transponder in the fob without this thread.
I was beginning to think that i had a real issue with the car as i only picked it up this morning.

When my fob came apart, thought the transponder was just a broken piece of case plastic, only on a whim did I toss it into the broken plastic pieces (of which I have many) box. Back together door locks working, kept getting Start Error, changed batteries, changed their direction, nothing worked until I saw this post searching under Start Error, transponder in hand ten minutes later car was running again. Super glued the case closed. Case Closed.

I just replaced my key fob case using this thread. Many thanks! It was so quick and painless once you know what parts transfer and what doesn't

Cheers!

Where did you get your new fob cover/case? I too have to have the panic buttons worn down and one with the spring sprung? I have not opened them yet!

Seckzy,

Thanks for the reply!! I had acquired one of the fobs with the key locked open and was unsure of busting the darn thing to fix it. Cheers!
