Post Disposable/unrepairable sun visor =(

I just received my new sun visor yesterday, installed it and went ahead to mess with the old one (out of curiosity). I think it happens to every other person: sun visor just clicks and hangs in the air. And we all start wondering - what happened? What part broke? Can I fix it?

Well, after I opened up the sun visor I realized that this part was not the best brilliant invention of the MB .
The answer is: It is NOT fixable :-(

So, here we have our sun visor, right?

I used my box knife to cut the sun visor and extract its contents. All it is: a mirror glued to the covering itself and pieces of plastic molded into foam =(

So, out of my big curiosity I went ahead and sacrificed my sun visor. I cut out the plastic holder and took it apart. Inside the holder there was also a plastic piece with the metal clip in it.

As we can see the "mounting hook" (don't know how to name it properly) (located on the left) goes right into the the curved metal clip.
Now, what happens is that this metal clip simply brakes apart =( The "mounting hook" simply swivels inside, and the clip sort of "clicks" it into place by means of pressure (squeezing). As you can notice the hook is not round but flattened on both sides to make it click and stay in place.

Thus, there's no way to fix it, take it apart without really damaging the molded foam =(

Broken metal clip:

No you know what part to curse when this happens to you! The sun visor cost me $67 and a few minutes to install =)) But believe me, it's way better than having it hanging in front and blocking all the view, especially traffic lights when you're first in lane . And the double-sided tape doesn't work good either :-( It simply unglues and you're frustrated again!

Sorry that it's not a real DIY but I hope I'll satisfy some curious minds in the future!

Jayson,
I'll bet that post was surprisingly theraputic.

Not only do you get to show your new solution to a long standing problem, but you get to draw and quarter the offender and post it on the Internet for all of the world to see.

And they can't convict you of anything !

Lol! Sure they can't!!! But it wasn't the purpose

At Mar84,

The sun visor cost me $67.50 from https://www.getmercedesparts.com/ + shipping. It's by weight. I ordered a bunch of stuff so can't tell you exactly. They told me it's approximately $30 for 15 lbs.

Swung mine the other way, heard a click and now it just hangs there. Went to the place above and their price now is

1708100110 - Sunvisor
Left

MSRP Core ? Save Online Price
$189.00 $0.00 $37.80 $151.20

No mention of color unless they get it from the VIN#

Ordered a used pair on ebay $89 + free shipping.

However, if it happens again, looks to me like they are a mirrored pair, that the much cheaper and more available right passenger side will work on the left driver's side, except that the mirror and warning sticker will be on the wrong sides. If the mirror is never used anyway, this would be a cheaper alternative.
