Thumbs up MAF removal and cleaning video - R170 SLK

Hi,
I removed and cleaned the MAF in my 1999 SLK 230 yesterday and produced a step by step video to help others who are thinking of doing it.

Hope it helps!

Cleaned MAF on SLK320

Thanks for the video! I've got an SLK320 and did the MAF cleaning yesterday. While slightly different in terms of location, the procedure was very helpful.

One thing I will mention is that in my case, the car actually ran slightly worse after the cleaning...until I unhooked the negative battery cable (make sure you have the radio code!) for about 1 min and then hooked it back up. Prior to doing the battery reset, my throttle hesitation was better, but the idle was terrible, almost stalling when at a stop light. Now it runs much better, although I'll be ordering a new MAF as I feel it still has room for improvement.

Diagram for MAF Removal - 2001 SLK320

Hi,

I found this on another site. It helped me get the MAF removed. My mechanic said there is no need to seperate the MAF from the Air Intake Pipe. He said I could spray the MAF Cleaner in through the grid on top. That's a good thing. I had removed both the MAF and the Intake as a single unit. That silver tab in the back that locks the MAF to the Air Intake Pipe does not want to come out. It appears to be a install-once, and to remove it would require bending the metal back and forth until it snaps, then replacing it. So that means I skipped step 7.

How do you change MAF sensor on 2001 SLK 320

Removing, installing

  • Remove engine trim panel with integrated air cleaner (1)

NOTE: Remove by pulling vertically up and off the cylinder head covers.
  • Unplug connector (2) of hot film mass air flow sensor (B2/5)
  • Detach crankcase ventilation line (3)
  • Release crankcase ventilation line on right at hot film mass air flow sensor (B2/5)
  • Open catch of hot film mass air flow sensor (B2/5) with a screwdriver
  • Push down catch of air intake pipe (4) at electronic accelerator actuator and remove air intake pipe (4) together with hot film mass air flow sensor (B2/5)

CAUTION: Do not damage catch.
  • Detach hot film mass air flow sensor (B2/5) from air intake pipe (4)

NOTE: Push back retaining clip with a screwdriver.
  • Inspect seals of air intake pipe (4) and of hot film mass air flow sensor (B2/5), replace if necessary
  • Install in the reverse order

MAF cleaning-try this when regular cleaning fails

Hi everyone,

I want to add something to this cleaning that may be helpfup to those who tried to clean the MAF unsucessfully.

I have a 1999 230k that refused to go over 3000 rpm at more than 30% (appro) throttle. Read on another post that if you disconnect the MAF the engine should run OK and the fan will run continuously. I did this and my car ran just as this said. Ran great and the fan ran continuously. I tried to clean it twice before without success.

Today I was determined to find why the MAF would go bad - if it really did? I was not convinced that this part could go bad unless it was physically damaged.

Besides the regular cleaning as indicated in this post I also removed the sensor by removing the two screws holding it in the air tube. It is sealed with an "O" ring but easily pried out with a screw driver. I noticed an arrow designating air flow and a sensor wire down inside this housing. I cleaned the wire with contact cleaner and a "Q" tip. And more cleaner.

Put it back together and took it for a ride. IT RAN GREAT - 6000 rpm at full throttle.

At $400 plus for a MAF it is worth it to me to try other alternatives.

Good luck

Hi, this may or may not be the right place but...... all of a sudden my SLK R170 has zero power, getting onto a free way takes an appointment. Engine will go to redline THEN shift. Get going about 45 and step on it and it phones home to see if it really should go, just NO Power. I checked the OBD and no codes show up. So far I've found similar issues with the MAF and a blown Cat Converter. I'm open to suggestions before I support my local shop.

THANK YOU BAYSHIELD Problem solved.

How I got to this point. Reset the computer, made problem WORSE, checked for codes, nada. Pulled MAF and had a little and I mean LITTLE bit of oil and no dirt. Hosed it off with contact cleaner, let it dry, re-assembled and it went like a bat out of hell. This has to be the easiest thing to fix on a R170.

MAF Failure

Thanks for the vid bayshield, my mechanic cleared a MAF failure code but it returned a couple of weeks later. I'm looking forward to trying your instructions and see if I can save $400 dollars.

I will post pictures of the no MAF where it should be.

Very weird, I've been looking for my MAF and its NOT there. I have a 2003 SLK230 Kompressor. Followed step by step instructions and the MAF sensor is not there. Only the air intake pipe is there with no sensor.

MAF trials and Cleaning

I'd like to thank everyone who posted regarding the removal and cleaning of the MAF.

I was having a problem with my car revving past 4000 rpm. If I opened the throttle fully it would hesitate a lot and not be able to climb past 4000 rpm. As a result the car would not shift up as well until I backed off on the throttle.

I read on this thread that if the MAF was disabled (unplug the cable) that the car should be able to rev up but the fan would keep running. I tried this and my car did exactly that. Suddenly I had lots of power and the car revved easily and shifted perfectly. The fan did however keep running.

After this test I took out the MAF and set about to clean it. I found it best to remove the MAF from it's housing by removing the 2 small screws and carefully wiggling the MAF out of the plastic housing. My MAF did not appear to be very dirty. Be careful not to damage the sensor and do NOT touch any of the small wires in the MAF. I used a spray cleaner and very generously sprayed all the metal parts in the MAF 3 times (there are some small recesses in the plastic housing that I sprayed into as well). I let the device dry on it's own and then reassembled it.

I took the car for a spin and it worked flawlessly. I'm very happy with the results and the cost is only about $10 for the spray cleaner.

I think in the future it will not be necessary to remove the entire MAF housing from the car. The 2 small screws are quite accessible with the MAF in the car and I think it can be taken apart while it's still mounted in the car. This should be quicker and easier.

I could not have done this without the help of the posters on this thread.
thanks again,
Marty

I had the same issue yesterday on my 2002. I watched the video which is great but for 1999. Did you end up locating it? Hoping it's the same on my 2002. Thanks.

After watching the 1999 SLK 230 MAF cleaning video linked, my MAF wasn't in the same location. I found another video and it was a breeze and I'm not a car girl. Not brain surgery - anyone should be able do it.

Here's the video for a 2002 MAF cleaning/removal.
