Installing a trailer hitch.

Yes, I did and it was not a terrible project. My reason for installing a hitch is for a bike rack, you could probably tow a motorcycle trailer or use one of those little platform racks for luggage.

Be sure to read the towing capacity of this vehicle first.

Anyway, on to the show;

Adding a (that’s right) Trailer Hitch » Rambling Along the Roads

Enjoy.

Cool (if unusual! ). Do you have any pictures with the bike rack on it?

Pretty cool idea. Thank you for sharing. Now all you need is a custom hitch cover with SLK or the MB logo.

@AZ SLK - that's a great idea! So I picked up a little black rubber plug for now, I will scour the salvage yards for a star off of something that will work. Though a I like the black out of the plug.

@Durkatlon - here you go. There is about 1/2" gap with the bike on the inner mount when the trunk tilts back. So with care it will take 2 bikes.

This is great.

Just came across your installation. What model of Curt hitch did you use? I went to their site, but none looked exactly like yours and they were almost twice the price.

Thanks.

According to the largest tow-bar manufacturers in Europe - No.

That is what I thought.
I hate this nanny state. Years ago we just made up our own out of bits of angle iron. I remember me and my dad making one for my 1954 Reliant Regal back in 1969 so I could tow our saing dinghy for 10 mile trips down to the river near York.
It's not like I want to tow a massive caravan which would be very irresponsible

I have mounted a Curt hitch on my current car.
I have looked, but can't find anyone but them who make one.
Good product, clear instructions

Quite easy fitting. No cutting or removal of bumper needed. Must raise rear of car to drive holes from below.
Take care to grind off the sharp corners of the inside bolt plates so that they don't cut into the spare tyre.
With a hoist working on someone elses car, it could be done in one hour, but doing it carefully on my own car took three.
The only awkward part is making sure it is lined up exactly in the middle, as it is asymetrical and there is no clear centreline reference, so I used the boot latch as a centre reference.

Only suitable for light duty. very light duty.
Product say 1 tonne load, 100kg vertical, that might be what the hitch can take, but CURT has no way of knowing what the car can take.
Buyer beware.
I would work on not more than half that figure, but you make your own mind up.

I never tow trailers on the road with it.

Haven't even wired up lights.

Too much risk of one day finding body distortion and the roof problems.
Any other car, I wouldn't be concerned.

Curt hitch 11751 on 2001 slk320 with 1up rack

Just to keep this thread going, I put a curt hitch 11751 specific to SLK 01-04. was pretty straight forward after looking at a few pics I could find. It feels pretty sturdy, was worried that the wheel tub wouldn't be strong enough. I will be using it for a 1UP hitch rack to carry my 50lb ebike. Just tried it on a long drive today. very sturdy. Which I give credit to the 1UP rack, it secures very tight on the hitch with no movement. The 1Up has a small footprint and closed up right next to car. Rack also folds up and fits in the trunk. So these two combined is what made mine a winner. check out the pics. link to curt mount CURT 11751 - CURT Trailer Hitches - FREE SHIPPING!

Not free shipping to Australia unfortunately.
I had to get my courier to pick it up.
There is another thread that shows a bike rack that is not so close to the bumper that allows roof stowage.
Kurt also sell extension pieces that might allow this.

my friend suggested i get a "practical car" ... The drop top with a hitch for bike racks and cargo carrier seems practical for florida living to me!
