This might be a silly question, if I'm just looking to replace the shocks can I just stop at step 5 and reverse the process to accomplish what I'm looking to do or are there other complications?

More then anything I'm looking to avoid buying a Heavy Duty Spring Compressor and the associated work involved.

Can anyone see a problem with what I'm trying to do?

No. They are not "inside" the spring, they are independent, so it should be a non issue to replace shocks and ignore the spring part.
