High oil temp/smell

During that MB Club "driving event" at Texas Motor Speedway, the oil temp peaked at 233 after a number of blasts well over 100, with most 115-123. Ambient temp 100. I also smelled what seemed like hot oil, or perhaps that "burned crayon" discussed here. Oil temp took 20 miles to get down to 194 going home. Last night it started running 212-214 on the highway. Can't remember it being that high except in very slow traffic with ambient temp around 100. Went down after resuming normal speed previously. Stayed high after turning off highway last night.

So today I tested it again in case that was a fluke. Up to 212-214 within 20 minutes of city driving. Smell still there, turned AC to flesh air setting, helped some. On the highway, temp quickly hit 218. Can't recall ever seeing that before. In all cases, water temp stayed glued to 199 as always. Oil and water levels fine.

SOOO - what temp do most see in an SLC 43? I seem to recall that 194ish most of the time as I usually leave the display on AMG. Thinking of taking it in this week as this seems out of whack. Ideas?

Your oil is in Fahrenheit? Only my coolant temp and outside air temp in F. Oil is in C.
Just asking. I get my oil up to 106 C when racing. 106 converts to 223 F.

Just for comparison , when Im running in sport mode "at speed" , oil temps gets up to around 103-104 C (with 103C
being 217 F ).

Back to granny mode and normal speeds, its around 98C (or 208 F ). That temp can vary very quickly though.

Have to say though, i didnt monitor for extended periods at speed. Ambient was 32 C 89 f .

Noop, checked it before and after the event. Overfilled if anything. No low oil light. Only 6800 miles, been changed once because it was over a year.

The low oil level wouldn't explain why the tip went down to 194 coming back from the track event. Bottom line, though, is that this is a change from what it used to be, Something happened. Dunno if it matters, but during the event, I got an alert that traction control was unavailable, along with lane assist and other functions. Eventually came back on. Didn't seem to affect anything, hasn't happened since.

Can you SLC 43 owners watch your oil temp and see what typical temps are?

Well, today all was fine. Oil temp was even below 190 at times at highway speeds. Hit 201 in slow traffic with ambient 102 once, but went back down. Didn't do anything to it except exercise my dipstick a few times. Dealer service rep didn't return calls so didn't take it in unnecessarily. Maybe something reset. I'm calling it good.

Man, does this thing GO!

I will keep an eye on the temp guage. I did recall seeing in excess of 200 just a couple of days ago, driving in sports mode doing 85 to 90 mph on Grand park way. The outside temp was around 98 F. But no oil smell. Our SLC43 generally runs hotter compared to my other Mercedes cars.

Nots sure if this is a fair comparison but every time I take my motorbike to track days, I get some burnt oil smell. Some oil tends to escapes via oil breather and burns when it touches the hot engine case. Not sure if that is the case with our SLC. Especially if you overfilled your oil a tad bit.

Where in Houston are you located?

Not in Houston, in DFW. Dealer changed the oil, not me, covers the dipstick completely - might be overfilled. Dummies didn't change the filter so I wouldn't be surprised at such incompetence. Gave them a 1 rating.

200 at speed is not bad. Thanks for checking your oil temp in the future.

215F round the town with very gentle driving on comfort setting (20 miles round trip) mostly below 1.5K rpm with stop and go traffic. 96 F outside temp.

That's reassuring, thanks! Yesterday I went to an MBCA lunch, then took a tour of Rockwall (disappointing). Temps were all over the place at the same speeds - 212 to 188! Water temp went down to 196, usually 199. So it looks like if I let it go, it eventually straightens out. Guess I won't worry about it unless it goes up and stays up. Funny thing is this never happened before that track event. Something changed.
