Hard clunking feeling with steering wheel turned to full lock

So on my 2017 SLC 43, I have this issue where I feel a hard 'thunk' through the steering wheel when turning slowly with the steering wheel all the way to the 'lock' position. It happens with the wheel left or right, in forward or reverse. I havent tested it at higher speeds because having the wheel all the way to the side at higher speeds is rarely feasible. It is not only felt but also makes an audible 'chunk' sound.

Plan on taking it in to the shop on the 19th but just wondering if any gurus here have an idea what it might be?

Thanks JB, I'll have them check that as well as those ball joints or bushings that wear prematurely.

I have exactly the same symptoms with my SLC 43. I already went to the shop. They checked everything and it seems to be normal when the temperature is colder and the tires are worn.

The symptoms gradually deseappear when the tires become warmer. Below, you can watch a short video to see with your situation is comparable.

in the last few weeks the clunking has returned to my SLC 43.

It was the same last winter when the temp drops.

It sounds and feels horrible and in my opinion it shouldn't do it.

It usually only happens when starting up and moving with the tyres cold.

Not taken mine to the dealers as it usually comes out with more wrong than it went in with!!

Interested to hear what your dealer thinks.

Does it get very cold in Texas ??

Cheers

Yep just watched the video and it is just like mine.

Once the temp drops Mr clunky returns!

Very scary and feels like the suspension is in bits.

Taking it to dealer on the 19th. It happens no matter what the temp outside is. It was an 80degree day the first time I noticed it. I will let you know, but the other thread responses are probably correct.

Hi,

it's called tyre ,skip.
my slc43 was fitted with winter tyres when I bought it in April this year, I had the winters removed for the summer,
and I now have tyre skip with the summer tyres fitted, it does no harm to the vehicle what so ever, I know it sounds like the suspension is falling apart.

I have just retired after 47 years as a master technician, in the motor trade, I'm not worried about it.

In fact my new c class also does it.

Yeah I just got it back from the dealer and thats what they said it is. They checked the bushings and coils and didnt find any issues, so unless something happens I'll just ignore it.

It just concerned me because my 2009 350 and 2012 350 never did that, and both had summer tires. It's odd to me that the 43 does it, but maybe it's because it has a proper AMG suspension that is more sensitive to tire skip and translates it through to the driver more? Or maybe its just stronger bc the car has more torque than my 350s did?

I will try to monitor it cold vs warm, as the tech said it *should* happen more in cold/wet weather.

Now I get to work trying to fix the jerky shifting that happens when slowing to a stop at a light. Seems to be 3-2 or 2-1. I guess the new 9g transmission still has some of the same quirks as the old. Will try the gas pedal kickdown reset method to reset the adaptive learning before I take it to a dealer as the jerky downshifts have been a long known problem on merc transmissions. Hopefully a DIY fix of the adaptive learning will sort it. Previous owner must've been an odd duck to adapt the trans to such a rough slow/stop downshift!

Oh dear!

My SLC 43 does this too and I HATE it.

It occurs when doing any low speed turns and not just when the tyres are cold, like reversing out of a parking space, pulling in to a parking space and the sharp left hand turn I have to make going in to the car park at work and also my local supermarket.

Mine seems to be getting worse (As does the squealing / howling from one of the brakes which attracts a LOT of the wrong kind of stares!) so I was planning to get the garage to look it over,

It feels like I am driving over pine cones,

I changed my worn tires for winter tires. These ones are almost new, I just drove with them during one season last year.
I have no problem anymore.

Ive been monitoring mine lately and it does seem to primarily happen when its cold and/or wet and the tires are cold. I havent had a chance to get the tires warmed up well then stop the car and do some low speed turning due to weather and schedule.

As for my transmission, what I thought was in 2nd or 3rd gear isnt actually a gear change at all. It happens when I am nearly stopped. In sport mode, coming to a stop, it lunges forward just before I come to a complete stop despite not changing the pressure on the brake pedal at all. It's very odd and something I will have examined at the dealer, though I dont have high hopes they will ascertain the cause. Maybe it is normal considering it isnt present as far as I can tell in eco or comfort mode.

I agree with khblackburn. I have not taken to my dealer, because I assumed it was those wide tires skipping.

There’s many posts about it on the AMGPL.
It is caused by summer tyres going hard in the cold weather and skipping before they warm up.
Fit winter tyres and it will disappear or just don’t worry about it, I don’t when it happens to mine..

All y'all are not crazy. Now I've started hearing this. Always freezing cold (at or below 40ş in Texas). First time was backing up, thought I had done went and runned over a glass bottle. Happened again yesterday backing up in 40ş misery while very wet. Probably never heard it before cuz it's not usually cold here and when it is, I stay home (MBCA event yesterday, kinda had to take it). Not going to worry about it now. Scraped some on the outside painted part while pulling out of that parking lot, but doesn't show. I'll have to keep an eye out for that now.

An oddity is that when pulling forward slowly as when parking, if you get near full lock, it wants to pull itself the rest of the way. I assume that's just the geometry. My 2012 350 did not do that. Doesn't hurt anything.
