Pet peeves on SLC already

I've owned the car for barely 30 hours and yet some things already seem bone headed.

1. Active Brake Assist - WHAT bean counter thought this is a good idea? I can brake just fine with my foot thank you. With this on, braking feels unnecessarily harsh (not smooth at all). Turning it off makes braking smooth and pleasant, as my foot knows what to do. But I can find no way to turn it off permanently. Every time I get in the car I have to turn it off again.

2. Attention assist - I dont need the car telling me when I need a cup of Joe. Same as brake assist, re activates every time I turn the car off and back on again.

3. Fuel reminder -yeah I know I am low. No I dont need you to find me a gas station. Hopefully a member here with the diagnostic tool can help me permanently deactivate this, as that is the only way afaik.

4. The pops and crackles are obnoxious in sport+. It feels forced and unnatural. If the car is as fast in Sport as it is in Sport+, I may never use that mode.

On the other hand, I love the acceleration. There feels like ever so slight a bit of turbo lag putting the pedal down hard below 2500-3000rpm, but it's less than 0.1 sec so anyone saying it is unacceptable must be crazy. Of course it might just be the transmission downshifting, but a couple times I felt it even when she didnt switch gears before accelerating. Maybe I just need to reset that adaptive throttle thing.

Sure the engine doesnt sound as sexy as that lovely V8 in the 55, but other than sound quality and acceleration ABOVE 100mph (aka go to jail territory if not on a track), it feels every bit as capable after 1300 miles in the car as the V8 did the one weekend I got to borrow one. I definitely feel the weight of the car less when taking corners hard, and feel like I could chew up a track day much easier in the 43 than the 55 as a novice driver.

Weird, but also loving the shift knob being so low and out of the way. Its a minor thing but I never really noticed how the pre-facelift R172 shifter got in the way until now. I am going to try to get the AMG shift nob and silver dial to replace the stock ones. Ive seen the AMG shift knob on the SLC43 Redart edition. Ive only seen the AMG silver dial on ONE SLK55 I saw on autotrader, possibly a retrofit from an SL65 silver dial.

@cousjcc , what car are you referring to? I only see a 2012 350 in your profile? Have you disposed of that? Acquired an SLC?

Please update your profile if that is the case

Thank you

I've not had "Active Brake Assist" kick in for Me, though done less hours than You!!
Do You have the "Distance Pilot Distronic" - Though over here every car now has to have the feature where it will brake for You, if it thinks You SLC is going to crash into the car in front...
As for the "Brake Assist" - I haven't perfected the art of engaging it (Sales Person did say it takes practice - Apparently go to release the brake pedal, then give it a dab), saves holding the brakes at the lights and would help for a quick take off, from the line, now the manual hand brake has gone..!!

Now I was reading the manual
...and thought "Attention assist" monitored Your driving, and if Your driving is no longer as sharp, it will flash up the message..?? (Red Bull & a power nap is Your friend on long drives..!!)

That is the downer on the newer UK SLC43's that it only comes with a 60 litre fuel tank & can't order the 70 litre either over here... And be interested for "range" reasons, not running costs what the SLC43's MPG is going to do on a long Motorway run..??
So what Octane do You have to run Your SLC43's in America??

Agree that the "pops and crackles are obnoxious in Sport+." and don't plan to use that mode, un-less I want to annoy some bystanders...

Agree the 55AMG sounds better than the SLC43 & think the 55 is quieter in Comfort mode..??
But the SLC43 sure is quick, with instant gear changes - though not sure if I like or not like the way that if You over ride the gear box with the flappy paddles, it reverts back after a short period?
So useful for some short term engine breaking, or being in a better gear to accelerate out of a bend:
(Though You can press the "M" mode for manual changing, with no interference, if You really what to play..!! )
As for the handling, the SLC43 sure is nimble and the variable powering steering makes small to medium roundabouts a lot easier than My old 2010 SLK350, that didn't have variable powered..

Agree the SLC "Shift Knob" is a lot neater & nicer to use - Only down side is "when" We take it to the Alps, where You have hair pin bend, after hair pin bend, the ability to just tape the Gear Shift Knob left or Right to change, especially from 1st to 2nd after coming out of a inside hairpin bend will be missed...
(Not seen the AMG one's - any pictures..??)

Now that our UK roads are covered in Salt.... I won't be doing many more miles for a while to get use to My SLC43, but will try and do a full pro's & con's report to un-grading from a face lift R171 SLK350..
(I remember @Col saying that it took a while to fully transfer over to His R172 55AMG)

But till then, make sure You have a good long test drive, before un-grading to a SLC43....

Some thoughts.....on your points above

1) I believe that this is only meant to activate if you brake suddenly and is like a 'reaction time' multiplier (so smooth braking should not have the brake assist kick in). Might be a problem on the car.
2) I have turned mine off in the settings - was the same in my SLK.
3) Be useful if you don't know the area & where the nearest fuel is (and if you don't run your tank too low, you won't get the message).
4) I find the gear changes in S+ (or M) the best for "exciting" driving but, I use I* mode most of the time on short trips & windy roads and C on long journeys/motorways.

AFAIK, you get all the performance in all the modes but lose progressively more electronic stability assistance in S and S+ (and I* depending on your settings).

My problem with active brake assist - yes for "smooth" braking it is mostly ok, but if youre braking late into a turn to carry speed before accelerating out of the apex, the car often thinks you arent braking soon enough and "assists" you, causing over - application of the brake going into a turn. It actively fights against spirited driving in the twisties from what I have seen thus far. And in Texas traffic in particular there are often sudden heavy braking situations because some mouth breather comes onto the highway (70mph zone) going 30mph causing drivers already on the highway to brake hard. I've never rear ended anyone in 34 years of driving and I dont need the car adding extra force the brakes and giving me a jolt, it's just plain irritating.

Attention assist - Considering I am just cruising along a hundreds-of-miles straight stretch of highway, there is little for the car to debate about the sharpness of my driving. It seems to simply start nagging you if you log long stretches without stopping. I typically go 300+miles between stops on long trips (basically just stop for gas and keep going). The electronic nanny doesnt like this and nags me if I dont tape her mouth shut.

Problem with BOTH attention assist and active brake assist is you cannot turn them off permanently. The reactivate every time I get back into the car or switch modes via dynamic select. IMO they should AT LEAST stay off until I shut off the engine, not reactivate every time I switch from Eco to Sport ffs.

Other comments: I put 93 octane (10% ethanol) in my cars, typically Shell but will also get Chevron or Exxon at times. I averaged 28.5mpg over my 1300 mile trip back (thats US gallons which are smaller than imperial gallons IIRC so our mpg is usually less). I was above 29mpg until I ran into traffic jams, which forced me off onto side roads and lowered my fuel economy
