mercedes dealer

Hi,

Yesterday I took my slc43 in for tyre change, from winter tyres to new summer tyres, ( winter tyres another story)
Dealer told me they could do it whilst I waited, had to be the first vehicle in the workshop, so we were there 30 mins before they opened, my car went in at 8.30am and re emerged
at 10.30.
upon inspection of the vehicle, outside, I noticed that two of the rims had sustained damage, to the inner shoulder of the outer rim, an area that can only be damaged whilst the tyres
were been fitted. I raised a complaint straight away with the service dept, the service manager came out to look, to tell me it was kerb damage, ( I have been in the trade 47 years, and know what kerb damage looks like ) todays tyres have outer shoulders built into the tyre wall to prevent kerb damage.
Anyway, he would not accept that this had happened in his workshop, so now I am left with two rims that need repair, (thanks very much ).

we set off back home, but had to return as the wheels were out of balance, another part of the job well done, I had to go out with the workshop controller, to demonstrate the problem,
he agreed that it was in fact out of balance, so back into the workshop, to be balanced again, so this is now 3 hours after we first sent the vehicle into the workshop.
Is there any good honest merc dealers about.

That really sucks when they won't stand behind their (shoddy) work.

This website does have a forum where you can find what you need right HERE

My local shop had to buy me 2 new wheels because they had 'the new guy' do them.

fortunately I had learned my lesson previously and had taken pictures of the wheels before I took them in (I also remove wheels from the car to avoid damage or dirty seats). Call me extra cautious, but nobody will care more about your stuff than you.

+1. Guess I (and a few friends) are the only mechanics I trust. Fortunately in my airbag incident I had taken a picture of the dash just before it went in for an airbag recall that showed no lights were on. Originally said I needed a $900 module. Turned out they did not have a scanner that could do an SRS reset (which means they did not follow the instructions either).

Just took my Jeep in for an oil change (have a package and a lifetime warranty). Few weeks later the AC was not as cool. Checked & found the high side cap was only finger tight and showed oil (cap is real seal, more reliable than schraeder). Tightened, added a few ounces and all is good again. No proof but...

Buy most of my tires at Sam's Club. They are used to my just bringing wheels in.

I had removed my wheels before taking it in, wash, polished and marked up with small marker pen, on the inside of the same spoke on each wheel, and the taken images of each wheel, front and back side, I am really fussy about my car's. But the service manager still would not admit they had done it.

I know accidents happen, but hold your hands up if you make a mistake, I'd think more about the dealer if they had.

so now I'm left with two wheels to have repaired.

If you have clear evidence that the wheels were undamaged when you took them in I would dig in and request a meeting with the dealer principal/managing director.
Be firm and keep things professional. Maybe visit when the dealership is busy and make sure you are overheard making your complaint.
Put everything in writing first so that they have the opportunity to reach out prior to your visit.
Remind them of 'The best or nothing'.
If you don't get satisfaction, contact MB UK and appraise them of your concerns regarding the particular dealership.

Surely the onus is on the dealer to identify and report any damage BEFORE they start work on the vehicle....

If they cant prove it wasnt damaged before, they are liable.

Small claims covers up to 10K.

You've already approached them once.
Twice is fair.

Check out the link.

If the damage already existed they should have noted it on the worksheet, surely?
They have not produced such, so.....

It reminds me of picking up a clients BMW 435 i

Upon parking it up a wonder round and the n / s front had impact damage this car is new !
Contacted the client with photos etc
He dont recall hitting anything as car is garaged .

He just told me to get it repaired .

Sometimes trust is all that is req .

On your case if they saw damage to your alloys before tyre change they could of notified you or took photos before start of work to cover them selves as such before the blame game starts etc

Stinks a little bit i would not go back to them .

Sorry to hear about your issue though .

Trust but Verify:

Within the past five years, I have purchased 3 Mercedes from the same Mercedes dealer, and the dealership has always treated me fairly and they have always provided me with outstanding customer service. That being said, I always have any vehicle Im planning to buy checked out by an independent master mechanic before I buy the vehicle and I always take multiple pictures of the vehicle before I drive it off the lot. I also wash the vehicle as soon as I get it home because washing a car will sometimes reveal small imperfections that I might have missed before I brought the vehicle home, and I try to put about 500 miles on the vehicle a soon as possible to see if it has any problems that might not have been apparent during a normal test drive. Over the years, this procedure has saved me thousands of dollars and helped me avoid remediation or litigation when a less-then-honest car dealer tried to ignore written agreements or warranties.

Keep in mind that "Best or Nothing" has two options.

Once checked everything out on a new car at the dealer. It had no oil in the differential. Another had so much engine sealer that the radiator clogged. Both once set to my satisfaction gave many miles/years of service.

Thumbs down

I have some small indentations x4 on the inner rims, all four wheels. I only noticed when I removed my wheels after a long trip to clean them. The garage manager said I should have reported it within 72 hours.

Yes, it's the same dealer I bought it from, and I have had issues with them since.

They supplied the car with new winter tyres fitted, and when questioned, claimed it was a Mercedes directive, via a TSB that winter tyres should be fitted to combat tyre skip. ( now according to the Pirelli web site these tyre perform best at 7degrees or below, not the 20+ we have been experiencing. )

Now having just retired from the motor trade (47 years) as technician (master) and previously been a service manager in the Ford network, I made some enquires to AMG about the said TSB,
to be told it does not effect AMG SLC 43 and the vehicle should have been supplied with summer tyres fitted, the dealer refused to fit summer tyres.

So AMG and myself agreed to split the cost of the replacement tyres, to be fitted by the dealer, AMG asked the dealer to supply labour cost free of charge.

when I questioned them about the damage, they produced, after some time the work card showing damage to the same wheels,( only after several employees had looked at the car ) but my experience and the way I personally acted, was to report damage, before starting the job, and inform the customer, there and then with either images or showing them what was found, that way there is no dispute's

I know there was no damage, before they touched the car, so I think I might contact Mercedes customer services, and take their advise.

Have to admit that on a personal level the only dealer network I've had consistently good service from was Volvo and even then it might just have been down to the actual dealers I had contact with.
During the time I owned mine they had a group of complaints from owners who used a network of dealers ran by one of the UK's big car dealer groups. On the back of those complaints they stripped that group of all of it's franchises overnight.

Considering the car I owned was over 15 yrs old and there were less than 300 of that exact model left running in the country they still couldn't do enough for me even if I was just popping in for a chat.

Couple of examples:
  • they once gave me one of their salesman's cars to keep overnight because they couldn't get the work completed on mine on time and didn't have a courtesy car available
they never charged for a courtesy car all the other times when I had one
they got the factory to produce a 1 off exhaust from the original blueprints and ship it over from Sweden

Sadly I've yet to find the same level of satisfaction anywhere else.

As others have said, be persistent but polite and just go straight to the top detailing not only this but the previous incident with the tyres as well, making it quite clear that you are not prepared to suffer any financial loss over this.

55russamg,

having looked at the image you posted, I ventured out this morning to look at mine, and the inner rims are badly marked, damaged where their tyre machine has been in contact,
further to that there are scratched where they have removed the old stick on balance weights.

I have just sent an email to their service dept, awaiting a response.

Reference Volvo (USA)

I received good customer service from Volvo when they were owned by Ford, but after a Chinese company bought Volvo, the customers service was terrible or nonexistent. I will never buy another Volvo, but on the positive side, the terrible treatment I received from Volvo is what encouraged me to test drive a Mercedes. If I had taken the time to test drive a Mercedes before I bought my first Volvo, I would never have owned a Volvo.

I have had an issue in the past where the dealership damaged my car and when pointed out to them they repaired without quibble. Since then every time I take the car in I take pictures of the car when I park it up. They also inspect the car in my presence before commencing any work so we can agree there is no damage. That is now the practise with all cars taken into the dealership and is not just confined to mine. I also inspect the car on completion of the work before driving away. With regard to tyres I recently had two new tyres fitted. I took them to a tyre fitters and agreed with them the wheels were in perfect condition before they commenced the work. Needless to say they were returned in the same condition.

@khblackburrn your dealership is hardly encouraging you to keep giving them your business. I hope you get it sorted.
