Red face Blackvue Dashcam - Any tips for hardwiring?

I plan to fit a Blackvue Dashcam to my SLC, really need one considering we drive a lot on minor roads
Already seen plenty of other cars on the wrong side have had these in the main car for years and whilst not the cheapest they are quite good

Anyway, I do like the idea of plugging into the socket as it will look ugly and messy

Has only one hard wired one and any suggestions of the best way to hard wire ?

Thinking along the same line as you - how to power a dashcam without trailing wires from the "cigar lighter" socket. Did you get any further with this or receive any decent suggestions?

Before you splash out on the Blackvue, take a look at Street Guardian dashcams, they do some very small and discreet ones with decent video quality day and night. Had one in my day-to-day car for 3 years and recommend it. Place to look in Europe is Dashcams | Dashboard Cameras | Car DVR.

One point - will wiring into the car power instead of plugging into the cigar lighter invalidate the manufacturer's warranty as it could be called a modification?

I have one hard wired into my slk, it is visually and functionally so much better than hanging outside the cigarette socket. i tagged onto the wires from the cigarette lighter socket at the rear then ran the wires to the left behind the foot well panel and up the "A" pillar and across the top of the windscreen behind the trim and it emerges out by the mirror panel. if fitted close to the mirror it is not visible from the drivers seat, also its is quite camouflaged in the mirror panel from the outside thus making it very unobtrusive. oh great pictures from these cameras.

Blackvue are reticent to tell you exactly what they do ( No wonder as they want to charge you 169 for a 128gb sd card that can be had for 34 elewhere! ) but you either need 5 Volts or your vehicles standard 12v

Most cameras these days are powered from a 5 Volt source with a simple voltage regulator circuit in a cigar plug connector. If it has a USB type connector on the Power Supply or both ends it's going to be 5V in to the camera.

There are several options for powering the camera. The 12v Auxilliary connector in the footwell of the R171 is a good one but requires the cables to be run down behind all the interior trims and behind the cubby or under the footwell panelling.

The best option is to pick up power inside the housing behind rear view mirror. There is permanent 12v there for the cabin light's , GPS system and rain sensors on all series.

You can get a small, switching power supply ( very low heat generation ) online from various providers which will convert 12 - 30v to a solid, stabilised 5v supply that can be mounted in the rear view mirror mounting but be warned that of several I have used most caused very bad radio interference and even GPS signal blocking. If you are going to use one of these units a good plan is to 'pot' it in a small cast aluminium enclosure using a shielded cable pass through and ground the housing. This will shield the GPS and radio from the radiated noise.

Alternatively use a linear type power regulator which will not radiate noise but will need some sort of heat dissipation scheme as some cameras can draw quite a bit of power with resultant heat losses.
