One week on with my AMG SLC 43

I have had my new car for 8 days now and it has not been without issues!

On pick up after the car was removed from the showroom by the salesman
I tried to put on my seatbelt.
Well it would budge so I called the salesman back. tried to release it but no joy.
Eventually another salesman gave the belt a very hard tug and it came free.
There appeared to be a strong sticker holding the belt in and once removed it was fine.
The sticker left a goo type substance on the inside of the belt which I became aware of on arriving home.

Drive home ( 50 miles ) was in Sport + naturally and I achieved 18.5mpg which in fairness included the 12 miles on the clock from the factory.

Used the car over the weekend with the hood down a few times.

Last Tuesday a neighbour popped over to look at the car and when I tried to lower the roof it packed in after the boot lid had fully opened.

No movement available either in open or close position. I called out roadside assistance but thankfully after about 10 minutes I tried the roof again and I managed to close the boot lid.

As I had to be somewhere I cancelled the call out.

I tried the roof again on Wednesday morning and it locked up again and took another 10 mins approx before I could close the boot lid.

Took the car into the Cheshire Oaks Chester dealers and you can guess what happened.........the roof opened fully albeit slowly.

They said it was slow and are going to investigate next week.

Another fault that appeared was the one touch window close. After the drivers window rose about a couple of inches it would shoot back down.
Chester had a look at that and a quick fix seems to have sorted it.

I have also noted that when I reverse out of my drive the movement I make is in a horseshoe shape. uphill slightly for the first half and downhill slightly for the second half.
The front wheels feel as though they are " skipping " like a dodgy CV joint would do in the old days.

Question....... If I turn the ignition off when the wiper is doing a sweep in auto, should it self park or stop where it is??

Finally apology for the long winded post.

I received my V5 yesterday and it stated that the car was registered on the 13th March. I picked the car up on the 11th March would I be right
in assuming that I had been driving the first two days of ownership without Tax and therefore illegally??

Look forward to any thoughts you guys and gals might have on that point.

Cheers

Tax runs from the 1st of the month.
I would not expect it to be untaxed.
Your sales documents would be your evidence.

Hope the gremlins settle.

Hi Tom,

Sorry to hear about your snagging list of issues, you would expect more of when paying so much for a car.

I have a SLK55 and have occasionally had the same issue with the front wheels when reversing. It's happened about 3 times and I put it down loose road surface with a powerful car and big tires. After the second time it happened I've been consistently looking out for it to happen again but it's so infrequent I figured it couldn't be mechanical. Would be interested if anyone else has the same issue.

cheers

I have the same issue when backing up sometimes. I seem to notice it most when backing down my driveway. It happens more often when I crank the wheel over more (tighter radius) then with a more gentle curve. Not terribly bothersome now, so I plan to ask about it at my 10K mile maintenance appointment. Never experienced this with my previous two SLKs.

Sorry to hear about the issues with the roof, hope your dealer can get this sorted for you quickly.

Dealers can arrange the tax, numbers plates etc before the car is registered, so I don't think you have anything to worry about there. After you pick up the car they submit the final documents which triggers the DVLA to issue the V5.

I have the same thing you mentioned about the wheels juddering when turning tightly at low speeds. Didn't have it on my previous SLK, so I put it down to wider tires. When I've had it happen it's kind of an odd feeling and I wondered if it was the wider tires catching on the inside of the arches. Seems to have happened less now the car is run in a little bit.

Alos, the wipers will not self park when switching the ignition off, so nothing to worry about there. This is the same as my old SLK, so I suspect it's just a slight lack of attention to detail by Mercedes' engineering team.

It is also this same maneuver that is mentioned in the R171 owner's manual: turn off ignition when wiper blade is in vertical position, so it stops in this "upright"/deployed position, thus allowing the owner/operator/technician to change/replace the wiper blade (Caution: always protect front windscreen with several layers of soft towel or thick cloth when changing/replacing wiper blades).

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your responses.

I am sure that Mercedes Chester will sort out my gremlins!

Still unsure about the tax and registration date issue. I appreciate that dealers can register and tax the vehicles in
advance but I would have thought they would have to be from the same date. When I drove away from the dealers the car wasn't officially
registered.

I will query this when I visit Chester on Monday.

Also note to self.......there are other dynamic settings......it doesn't have to be in Sport + all the time!

Oh yes it does....

Thanks again.

I was told that my dealer could put an extra week of tax on my new car if it was registered just before the end of a month, so that I didn't lose a month. I never found out if that was true, as I rejected the car when I went to collect it, but the paperwork seemed to confirm it. The replacement car was collected mid-month and this time I did lose a couple of weeks duty.

As far as the "skipping" in reverse gear on full or near-full lock is concerned, I've had that occasionally on a couple of previous cars when backing off my driveway - on a Mazda MX-5 and a Jaguar XF, usually on a slightly damp surface. Both cars were rear-wheel drive and I simply put it down to dragging the front wheels backward round a tight curve on a varying slope. The SLC hasn't done it yet, probably because I park in a different position these days but it won't surprise me if it happens one day - I know there's nothing wrong with the car.

Tom

Your owners manual recommends running it in for the first 1500km & not redlining it? Not sure if the is applicable to the 43 but it is in the A Class online manual.

You are quite right Rory,

First 1000 miles no full throttle in any gear.

I am using all the modes sensibly....honest.

You don't need to redline the 43 to get the lovely soundtrack.

Roll on 1000 mile mark!

Enjoy - never gets boring!

I collect mine in 3 weeks. I think it is the same engine - looking forward to getting the 1500km behind me (will try and do it in the first week as I will not be at work).

Yes I believe the SL 400 has the same engine.

Enjoy!
