Exclamation SLC Air Scarf - Not working on delivery - UK

Hi All

Just a bit of advice, I picked up a New SLC 250 D last weekend , with the Air Scarf option . However having picked up the car, on driving it back, i found out that when you pressed the Air scarf, the light came on for 3 seconds and then went off . So back i went to the dealer..

They immediately plugged it into Star , and found it had an open circuit on the air scarfs, both sides of the car. It transpires that Mercedes appear to be shipping them from Germany without the heating elements and Fans fitted. Probably due to the recent Court finding about the Patent . My dealer immediately ordered two fans, and they were installed today , and all working fine.. BUT if your collecting a new car, Check the Air-scarfs are working before you accept the vehicle !!!

That's utterly ridiculous. If you order Airscarf, you should have Airscarf from day 1 of your ownership. The dealer should not have to strip the seats down (OK, it's an easy job) and retrofit missing parts. And if that is a factory decision, they should note it as part of the PDI instructions and supply the bits with the car. In fact, thinking about it, they MUST have picked up the fault on the PDI and known about it when you collected the car. Or they didn't properly PDI the car. And you paid 600 for that pre-delivery preparation.

Are they compensating you for the inconvenience? We live 70 miles round trip from my dealer and the 55 is on a very low mileage lease (7500 miles per year) and every time the car goes back on a warranty job they extend the lease mileage by 200 miles to compensate for the fact I'm having to run the car in to them and back because of a warranty issue.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Good morning,

We have a new SLC which was delivered last week. Our Airscarf is also not working, we can switch on from the console and the LED's light then go out after a few seconds.

The car is going in to the main dealers on Thursday to get a faulty speaker investigated. I have just called them to add this fault to the list, they claimed to have no knowledge of the fault, I mentioned that 30 mins on the inter web this morning brings up the issue. I wonder just how many cars are affected?

I can post back on Thursday / Friday with the Dealers findings.

Before you let them look at it, ask them for the copy of the PDI report. They MUST plug the car in and clear any faults AND they should check all features of the car are operational prior to handover. Someone WILL have signed this off as checked. Someone, whether it's you or the lease company, paid for the PDI, so if they haven't done it, ask for your money back. They can't really argue. I have all the PDI checklists for the SLK/SLC and they are supposed to check that the Airscarf heater heats up and that the three levels of operation are different.

That's interesting re the PDI report, do I need to go to the supplying dealer or can any dealer produce it?

The supplying dealer should have given you a copy when you picked the car up. After all, you paid for that check to be done. I think a lot of dealers see the PDI charge as a sort of "tax" on new car buyers. It's a bit cheeky of the car manufacturers to charge for the dealer to make sure the car is properly set up before you collect it, but that's the custom, so we all pay it.

I doubt any other dealer would be able to supply it.

After contacting my dealer last week for a update on my car ive oredered what feels like months ago. he responded that my car will be manufactured on the 6th july.
I emailed my dealer agian last night after reading these threads above. as my baby was ordered with airscarf. I explianed the above threads in my emailand asked him to contact MB germany to ensure this aint going to happen to me.

My dealer responded today by email with "No you wont be affected by this" so im wondering two things now. 1. they (the germans)are aware and have it sorted. 2. he (the dealer) is trying to keep me calm while he goes and investigates it and trys to avoid this happening to me.
Either way, i will not be a happy bunny if mines not working and they have to pull it about to rectify.

Maybe im being over sentertive. But **** like the airscarf thing should not of happened to the guys reporting this. A one off is to many in my opinion.

The dealer will not have spoken to anyone in Germany. They will speak to Mercedes dealer support in Milton Keynes, who may contact Germany. I suspect it's more scenario 2 and he's trying to keep you calm during what is a very stressful time for you. You've promised to pay a small fortune for a car and, if you're anything like me, you're probably worrying about whether you picked the right colour, should you have gone for a different seatbelt, interior trim selection - everything is stressful and you just want the darn thing to turn up so you can drive it.

Anyway...

Even if they do have to open up the seat it's literally two screws and 4 clips to take the seat shell off and then they just screw the heater and fan units in and hook them up to the wiring loom then it's 4 clips and 2 screws to put the seat shell back on. It's no biggie. Honest. Maybe an hour in labour time. For both seats.

As long as your car is intact and the Air Scarves work at the time you pick the car up, I wouldn't stress about it.

Hi Wja96.
Thanks for your response and opinion. The seat explaination on how it comes apart helped. I popped into my dealer today to talk about this issue and he made me feel a whole lot better about the IT. He said that they had received a note from MB about a batch of cars which had this exact issue with airscarf. But he said that was a couple of weeks ago. So the issue was dealt with once Germany relised the error of their ways. So he said he was confident that it will not affect my car as they hadn't started building it yet. The date has moved from today when it was originally planned to now another week. But he did say he would make sure everything worked on my before hand over day.

Hi jasy , Apologies , i didn't mean to worry anybody with my original post. I was present when the dealer retrofitted the Air scarfs, and as wja96 said , it was very easy for them to do. 2 screws at the bottom of each seat , and then pop pff the seat back cover. in the back of the seat , mine had blank mouldings, were the Fan / heating assembly should have been , all the wiring / connectors were present so they simply removed these banks and fitted in the new units and plugged them into the wiring loom . - Took about 10 minutes per seat . They then plugged it into their diagnostic systems and went through a series of test ensuring the fans worked correctly. The testing took longer than the fitting .. So it was an easy Fix in the end.

I believe that my SLC , which was built just after Mercedes lost their Patent court case, in May 2016, on the Air Scarf. This is were they were stopped from Selling and advertising the Air scarf in the German market until 25th December this year, when the patent apparently runs out . (see link below, there are loads more on the Web if you search Mercedes Air Scarf Patent.)

German court turns off Mercedes' Airscarf over patent dispute

Probably , and this is only my /guess . as a precaution , Mercedes fitted the cars manufactured on or around this time with Blank Air scarf blank units , until they sorted out their manufacturing process, or clarified thiner legal position. this would have ensured that no vehicles sold in Germany would be shipped with Air Scarfs. Also with the UK dealer fitting the Air scarf units, they were complying with the court finding , they shipped the Vehicle without Air scarf, and the UK dealer Retrofitted them which they are allowed to do .This is only a guess on my part , but it would make sense to me . I have been told that other models of Open top Merceeds made at the same time have had the exact same problem.

Anyway , the Fix is easy , the Dealer order my fans from Mercedes UK in Milton Keynes, who shipped them over night and as i said the "fix" was simple and straight forward . Just every annoying at the time . Hence the advices of double checking when you collect the car.

The Air scarfs are Brilliant by the way, and the car has had NO other issues, having now had it for 2 weeks, We love it .. !!

Hi All,

Just a quick update on where we are re our SLC. I dropped it off at my local dealer first thing yesterday morning. Received a call around lunch time stating that Airscarf parts were missing, they would be ordered and installed today.

I chased the dealer just after lunch time as I hadn't had any update, was assured it would be ready tonight. We have just spoken again at 16:30 and it's not ready. Apparently the seats have to be removed and it's a really big job (I realise this contradicts the comments above), new estimated time of car being ready is 09:30 am tomorrow morning. I have the strangest feeling I'm just being fobbed off.

Due to our last Mercedes being so reliable I had forgotten just how poor some customer service could be.

Anytime I have any issues, I mention the 40000 member Mercedes forum I am a member of and how this bad customer service will be viewed by members and that their future business to purchase and service their cars at their establishment will suffer

I only found this site after i had collected my new SLC yesterday, tried the air scarf on the way home and not working. I contacted MB customer service and said i wanted my 395 back for the air scarf. Still waiting for a reply, i was told it would take 5 working days for a response, i told them i want the car replacing ro a refund if i am waiting for 5 days.

The car was taken to MB Wolverhampton who said open circuit and seats are to be stripped on Wednesday but they won't order the parts. I have sent them a link to this site.

Hi, no loan car as i bought from Chester which is 51 miles away so Wolverhampton is nearer. MB UK have been useless, phone put down on me etc, i have said i want cost of air scarf refunded at the very least or i will reject the car.

I thought a SL from Brooklands on the 19th July which broke down the day i bought it and had done just 160 miles, i never had any problems with my E Cabrio

Wolverhampton might be nearer, but your contract is with Chester who sold you the car.

If you want to reject it, you should have taken it back to Chester. Chester did the pre-delivery inspection (PDI) and Chester signed the car off as all working 100% so it's them you should be taking the issue up with.

I really don't understand why people say Mercedes in Milton Keynes were useless. Of course they were useless. They're not involved in the transaction between you and Chester Mercedes so they won't get involved. It's like phoning up Sony because Currys won't give you a refund on a TV you bought. They're just going to sympathise and point you straight back at Currys.

If they really did put the phone down on you then I would suggest calling Mercedes European Customer Service in Holland.

+31 20 721 97 22

They called me after I gave Mercedes Norwich a low score on the post-service customer questionnaire because they half-washed my car and when I complained they basically gave me the bum's rush.

It's very likely someone from Mercedes will contact you about your purchase. Either by e-mail, post or telephone. Just score Chester low for everything and say you're not happy. Tell Wolverhampton you'll score them down as well if they don't pull their fingers out. The Dealer Principle's bonus is calculated partly based on their ranking in a national list of customer satisfaction and because they get so many 5/5's, anything that drops the average takes forever to get back up the charts again.

We know this is an easy fix. They just need to order the parts and it's a couple of hours labour. Instead of which they are making you drive around (inconvenience) because Mercedes cocked up in (presumably) not fitting your Airscarf. But you won't get anything out of Wolverhampton or Mercedes in Milton Keynes. You really need to query the PDI done by Chester. I get paid by the day and I billed Audi Norwich for having to take half a day off work for rectifications that had to be made to repairs they had carried out (and botched) under warranty. You could threaten to add up all the time you've spent on this and send Chester Mercedes a big bill. Much more than the 395 for the Airscarf.

The most important thing is to be utterly, utterly, reasonable. If people are putting the phone down on you, it's maybe because you've gone too far. Just be terribly reasonable.

Thumbs down

I simply can not believe that someone would sell you something that is not there.
Surly this against the Law.
I would return the Car immediately to where I purchased it and demand a resolution and while it is being resolved also demand a Car free of charge to use while they rectified the situation.
Get the Trading Standards involved as this is a known Miss Sale by Mercedes Benz.
Park your Car across their entrance if they Fob you off.
Phone Holland.

To be fair Chester have been great, Wolverhampton are not too good at getting anything resolved. I am trying to do phone calls and emails in between hospital appointments and trying to hand back my e class.

At the least i want the 1st service free plus the car fixing

I will keep you updated.

I had no problem rejecting my SL in July

Makes me wonder....

If all they do is order the fan etc, but the wiring loom is in place anyway.

Is the wiring loom fitted as standard, or only on those who have ordered Airscarf.

Because, if it is there anyway future orders could be placed without the airscarf option,
the new owners ordering the parts and retrofitting.

Although, the dash buttons would be dummies and need doing too.

Wasn't there a similar find with the Magic roof. Solid tops having the basics of the magic underneath the skin.

MB Chester are usually helpful, other than charging to simply look at a problem.
