My wife and i are in the early stages of planning a extended vacation for some time next year. Here is what we came up with so far. If anybody has any suggestions on sites to see along the way please post them up.

What's the purpose of the trip, visiting family, friends, locations?

I feel a little odd making suggestions as to what to see in the USA...but here's my two cents worth.

Dayton Ohio - USAF Museum. The drive there through NY state and Pennsylvania, West Virgina is nice, though I can't recommend any specific routes.

Chicago for sure; but I would also make a detour to see St Louis. There's an interesting neolithic indian site just east of STL as well as an MB museum in the city. That said there are some very nice parts of the city (1800s and early 1900s) as well as the Arch and Gateway Museum.

The run south along the foothills will be spectacular. We enjoyed SLC. The area around Colorado Springs is nice as well. Have you thought of going as far as canyon country? Breath taking.

In the southwest, the Flagstaff area is fantastic. Several neolithic sites (peublo and canyon dwellers). To the south is Sedona, to the east is the Petrified Forest. Further east is Santa Fe and not to be missed.

We found our car in Oklahoma City - the old warehouse district is very interesting. The memorial to the Federal Building bombing is well done and touching.

Your adventure sounds great - it (extended trips) is what we want to do when we retire as well. We have fond memories of meeting Galo and Gregg (as well as their spouses who are far more charming!); we enjoy the social aspect of the SLK forum and highly recommend saying hello as you go along. Take lots of fotos (and as I've found, take some notes with them!)

We will see some family and friends along the way, mostly just to get away and see some of the country.

I concur, one of the best aircraft museums if that's one of your interest. Good luck with the trip, looks like fun.

The drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway is good but slow. You need to take US 129 from NC to Tenn. This called the Tail of the Dragon, 318 curves in 11 miles.

I would suggest visiting Chicago and then catching Interstate 70 through central Illinois to St. Louis.....then southwest through central Missouri and the Ozarks.....if you can work that into the trip. IMHO there is not much to see in Iowa or South Dakota. You would be welcome to rest and reprovision with us.

Lots of national parks up in the Montana area that are on my bucket list, and it appears your trail takes you close by. I'd be checking out a bunch of those.

I say get a National parks and federal recreational lands annual pass, I think its $80 & good for a year.
As for National parks, I'd say Glaicer, Yellowstone, Bryce, Zion & the North rim of the Grand Canyon are some of my favorites.

I looked into the pass and your right its $80 and covers owner + 1, so its worth the money.

We don't have enough time. My wife only gets three weeks vacation two of which have to be taken back to back. If she can get all three at once then game on,

If you are age 62 or over you can get a lifetime pass for $10.00.

Wow! looks like a great trip.

While going through PA just East of Pittsburgh is Frank LLoyd Wright's Fallingwater Home.

Fallingwater | Home

For an awesome meal try Primanti Brothers, featured on the Food Network and voted 3rd best in the country! Located in Downtown Pittsburgh's Strip District.

Looks like you are going to be near the Flagstaff/Sedona area. Some suggestions.

Flagstaff
- We loved that town - There is a central shopping/eating area where you can sit outside and eat at a couple of cafe's. Worth a stop to eat and walk around for an hour.

Grand Canyon
- If you haven't been then you need to go. I have only been to the South Rim - As you are coming down from the north you should consider the North Rim - I hear it's spectacular, but not a trivial thing to get there.

Sedona
- You should go to see the scenery. There are a few vistas that are visually stunning and made me stop the car, like coming down the hill toward the main intersection. Interesting place, though - all the stores close at 6pm, so when it's cool enough to walk the streets nothing's open.
- Frank Lloyd Wright designed a church nearby - stop and see it - a beautiful place.
- Driving the canyon between Sedona & Flagstaff will be great in the SLK. I think you gain 3,000 feet in 30 minutes. Remember - altitude changes temperature - Flagstaff can be 25 degrees cooler than Sedona - we just don't get that back east.
- Enchantment Resort - About 20 minutes west of Sedona - Posh place where the rich folks vacation - Great place to have breakfast out on the patio - it won't break the bank to do that. You may need a reservation.
- Jerome - We loved this little town. An old mining town on the side of a mountain about 30 minutes SW from Sedona. A one street town - it winds back and forth up the hill. Lots of art shops, souvenier stores, and restaurants. You should stop for lunch or dinner. When we were there they were having an art festival - all of the shops were serving wine and cheese.

Regardless - Enjoy your trip. We love the American West - it is absolutely beautiful. Most of the places we have been are west of your route, but if you have a chance to go farther west another time then you won't regret it.

In the interest of balanced reporting - it is also a pretty desolate place. If they say there are no gas stations - then they mean it! I was planning on visiting Chloride, Arizona on the way from Sedona to Vegas via route 93. After driving for an hour through absolutely nothing I decided that if my rental car decided to conk out over the hill in Chloride then it would be weeks before anyone found me. Thus I concluded that if you looked in the dictionary under "Godforsaken" you'e see a picture of Chloride, Arizona.

Enjoy your trip and take lots of pictures !
