Thumbs up If you had 9 days in Europe - where would you drive?

Hi Guys and Gals, this is my first post and I would like to float an itinerary with you all which has been in the making for about a month now...I wondered if any of you had tips/tricks/things we'd be mad to miss if you've done epic road trips in Europe already?

Three of us are travelling in our own cars following this route (which has been plotted in Autoroute 2010 so we think the timings are nearly bang-on but feel free to criticise!):

Sat Day 1. London to Chaumont (Fastest route)
Sun Day 2. Chaumont to Greoble (Fastest route)
Mon Day 3: Grenoble to Nice (via Route Napoleon)
Tues Day 4. Nice to Val-d'Isere (Col de Turini and via Susa, D1006, D902)
Weds Day 5. Val-d'Isere to Lake Como (Fastest route)
Thu Day 6. Rest day around Lake Como
Fri Day 7. Lake Como to Bern (via Gottard Pass, Furka Pass, Grimsel Pass, Susten Pass, Oberal Pass)
Sat Day 8. Bern to Karlsrue (through Black Forest)
Sun Day 9. Karlsrue to Amsterdam (via Autobahns and then motorway)
Mon Day.10 Amsterdam to London (Fastest route)

Hi

Route Napoleon is a dog apart from the bit from Digne-les-bains South towards Nice.

If you like traffic jams go into Nice otherwise arrange a loop around the Verdon Gorge and then on to Mont ventoux.

Avoid Turini unless its a Monte carlo rally homage. Instead go over the Col Bonnette then Col Izouard then Galibier then Iseran to Val disere.

Lake Como is nice in photos but a dog to drive as its just traffic.

In black forest do the B500. A Must drive.

From there use the Wine-strasse to Kaiserlautern and the Mosel, Stay in Trier.

I think you are trying to do too much, stick to Provence area/ French Alps and Black forest etc on way back.

Am going out for some nosh so hurried this.

Finally try this www site www.Alpineroads.com it may help.

If you want accomodation I have been there a few times.

Cheers

Thanks! I'll take some of that onboard, I heard the route napoleon was a dog in some places! I am actually meeting my girlfriend in Lake Como so its not for the driving But good to know. Everything else is great knowledge, we have today to make final alterations before booking hotels so well timed!

We have all returned safely from this trip and all I can say is "wow". I saw parts of Europe that I think very few people do, met some fantastic people, drove on the best and most challenging roads I think I will ever have the pleasure of attacking and best of all the Merc was flawless (the tyre pressure sensor threw its toys out of the pram at 2000m above sea level but other than that...nothing happened!).

Pics to follow but if you ever fancy doing this kind of trip, even two-up like I did, you should. It's amazing and SLK is an ideal car to do it - comfy, quick, nimble on alpine roads and refined on the autobahn. Plenty of room for two big bags, a tent, tools and other essentials for a long road trip. I was suprised by how hassle free it was and how involving a drive it was to drive. It needed to be set to manual (any auto mode really gets confused on alpine roads) but I kept up with both my friends Lotus Elise and Golf R32, albeit with more style and more comfort ;-)

In total we covered 2650 miles in 10 days (well 9 actually, we had a day off in Lake Como) covered the Route Napoleon, Col de Torini, Furka, Sustan, Grimsal and San Bernandino and Gertado Passes and probably others!

have a look at the Furkapass railway at Gletch, take the trip if you have time. We came back from the Mille Miglia this year via the canyon of Verdon, The Ardeche and Tarn gorges, having a look at Norman Fosters bridge over the Tarn at Millau. Some of my paintings of the cars at Brescia. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/blesm/
