Custom exhaust for R172 SLK 350 V6

Hi all,

I know that there have already been numerous posts on exhaust. But none actually relating to the 350 model. I absolutely love the sound of my 2012 SLK 350. Especially with the roof down and hitting the rev limiter through roads with tall buildings as it just echos through the streets

But, looking for something louder now. I don't want a droning sort of noise. Somethung quite on start up but really opens up when hitting full throttle. Not really a fan of bolt on exhaust so will go custom stainless steel.

Now here's where I become a pain in the ass with my specific requirements.

I'd like to keep the stock rectangular twin pipes. I don't want to go decat. I don't want to loose the tone of the current exhaust. All I want is for it to be a lot louder with a lot more pops and crackles. Any recommendations on what sort of instructions I should be giving to the exhaust place specialist?

For those of you in the UK, I'll be going to flowtech in Essex. Top quality work from those guys. Worked on around 20 of my friends cars. But this was back in our boy racer days where we all decided to go straight piped

Any help would be appreciated thanks

Edit: oh and if anyone has an aftermarket exhaust installed on their r172 350, I'd love to hear it. I've checked the piecha videos on youtube and it just didn't have that oomph for me

I doubt you'll find an improvement without at least doing a cat delete of one sort or another.

Options are primary, secondary cats, back box and that's about it to keep stock look.
Other than buying/making a new system.

Are you worried about deleting and the MOT?

I do not recall a single member having issues as yet.
Many 55s with non standard system.
If it were to be an issue, the 55s would be picking up on it.

You can do deletes in a manner that enables a return to stock if needed.

My memory is not perfect, but I think flowtech have done SLK/C exhausts previously.

I know you have done many searches from what you say.
Did you try simply 'flowtech'?

Not worried about the MOT with a cat delete. More worried about it becoming a deeper tone and loosing that raspy sound. Also, the police around where I live have nothing better to do then pull over slightly loud cars. And what with ths SLK being one of those cars which stands from the crowd (also haven't seen anyone with an r172 model in my area either), it's easy to spot.

I've tried taking my car in to flow tech to get it on the ramp and discuss options but they're extremely busy so I thought I'd try here first. I'm happy to remove/replaces boxes and resonators etc. Maybe even piping?

Just change the resonator for an x pipe, I have this on mine, ticks over normally, small muted burbels on lift off and sounds awesome on WOT.

I know nothing.

Getting that out of the way, before you go about the expense of deleting the resonator/installing an x, give this a perusal. It's for Mustangs but I would think it applies here.

Note: Nowhere does it say that a resonator lessens sound. It only eliminates certain frequencies. If you have a resonator that only cancels out songs by Cher, that’s great. The bad news is Madonna will still be as loud as ever.
If that's true, then .......

As an owner with the full bolt-on Piecha/Fox system, I can tell you that in real life, it sounds far better than on video. It is deep-throated, just loud enough and has a particular song that makes you turn off the sound system in the car to enjoy. It is singularly the best mod on my car. Compared to stock, it is night and day... Besides the sound, it gives the car a completely new look... aggressive and sporty. The sound does match the look.... Can you tell I love mine? The whole system cost just under 1100 Euros... Best money I ever spent on my SLK.... Every one who has the unit loves/raves about it. MB Techs at my local dealership who work regularly on AMG cars told me they love the sound of my car and believe it is a close mimic of the V8 AMG in the 55... a compliment I can live with

A small sampling of the Fox/Piecha exhaust on my 2013 350 from my crappy iPhone video recording on a freeway heading home last week, just uploaded today (best with external speakers). Not the most clear due to the background road noise, but gives a taste of the exhaust, just a tad.... I should do a better one at some time in the future using a proper recording device.

Here is one with top up en route to work, also on my iPhone.... needs less road noise and better video recording device. I suggest to use an external speaker to get a better experience than the crappy PC speaker...

Smile X-pipe fitted

Took the plunge at the weekend, and had a x-pipe fitted in place of the central resonator on my SLK 350.

The exhaust has more burble at low revs, and has a nice rasp with a bit of edge to it through the rev range. With the top up and in the cruise it doesn't really appear to be any louder, but you can hear it when accelerating.

With the top down you can hear a lot more going on which is great. It is still not really loud but removes the rather 'flat' exhaust sound (it is a V6 after all).

Overall very pleased with the result, and it also didn't cost too much

Hi.

Looks good. I am thinking of doing the same. Was it a custom job or an off the shelf? also do you have the standard back box's? I ask because i would love a simple bolt in version to "Give it a go" and if it's too load i can put it back to standard.

Do you have a video/sound clip on Youtube?

Many thanks and kind regards.

Custom job. They made up the x-pipe from stainless pipe, cut out the resonator and welded the x-pipe in. All in all took a bit over 2 hours. I have kept the resonator on the basis I can have it put back in (welded) if I want to,

I have kept the standard back boxes and outlets for a 'stock' look. I did also consider replacing the back boxes instead of replacing the resonator, but based on what I had read the x-pipe would give me the level of change that I wanted, and was about half the price of replacing the (two) back boxes (I would have still kept the standard exhaust outlets).

I don't have a video/sound clip on YouTube. I did try making a recording of the car when stationary, and whilst not bad it did lack a bit from the actual sound.

It took me a while to convince myself to do it, but I'm now glad that I have
