SLK 250 d Performance Increase Advice / Info

Hi. I've read quite a lot about different chips, tuning boxes (eg RaceChip), re-maps (Celtic) etc. for increasing the performance of an SLK 250d. Most claim quite impressive increases in torque and bhp. BUT, I've not read anything or found any info on what the actual performance increases are, ie. the standard 0-60 is approx. 6.5secs. What is the performance after having the car chipped, tuning box installed etc.

Has anybody got any info to clarify what all these claims actually mean?

Thanks

Not sure about 0-60, you will feel a remap on your car.
On n/a engine the remap is not much but on a turbo is a huge change if they know what they do.
Personally, I will get it done, a remap NOT s power chip box.

I installed a RaceChip Pro that I bought second-hand from a member here, early last year.

I noticed and immediate increase in torque, as well as a 10% or so increase in my miles-per-gallon figure.

All went well until the really cold spell at the beginning of this year when I had a problem with the engine management light came on. A quick trip to my local MB dealer where they did some diagnostic tests, and reset the light. Their advice was to remove the unit. According to the Service Manager, they had a number of SLKs which suffered the same fate in the cold weather.

I duly removed the unit and haven't had a problem since, though of course I have noticed the increase in fuel consumption and the (slight) lag when putting my foot down.

Installation is very quick and easy, as was removal (even for me, a complete novice, with all the practical skills of a maggot).

@ChrisRocket, PM if you want to try the unit out, it's currently doing nothing, sitting in a drawer.

Have a look at GAD Tuning Essex, I recently had my SLK55 done and am very pleased with the results. We will get our C Class 250 cdi done also at some stage.

It cost me Ł375, but Anthony applies his own map best suited to your car and depends on your requirements. Rather than others that seem to just increase your fuel flow. I had problems with such plug and play ones on an E Class diesel a few years ago.

I can update you next week. My 250 CDI is booked in for its remap next weekend including a rolling road before and after.

Thanks for this - I'm not too bothered about cost (except the Brabus type!!) but am interested in what the supposed increases in torque and bhp actually translate to in performance gain.

Thanks - I'd be really interested. I'd expect a significant gain with the torque increase, but ...........................

Hello, i recommend remapping! Mine was remapped 2 months ago and there is now 280hp / 600Nm. That is best result what i had saw OM651 engines. A guy how did it is a wizard Name is "tuikku" from finland. Here is some tec-data about our engine remapping: W204 C220 CDI Remap | Page 2 | MBClub UK - Bringing together Mercedes Enthusiasts

Because of studded tires i can't say anything about 0-60 perform, because i don't have grip enough.. 1-2 week and i had my new 265/25/20 Dunlop sports!!

Talking ....the verdict

Well, I got the remap yesterday and immediately impressed. Eco feels like Sport.

As for the increase, it's up to 245hp and Torque is up 60lbft.

According to the guy doing the rolling road, it's likely to be a touch more in real life as l the Merc Diesels need to be under real load to boost properly.

Economy seems to be up but I've only down about 50 miles so will see how it goes in the longer term.

What do you do about telling your insurance company. Could they tell it has been remapped if you had to make a claim.

Definitely worth it.

Eco feels like sport but without the jerky round town at low speeds.

Averaging 45-50mpg on average and taking it easy at a steady 56mph it’s over 60mpg.

You tell them like i did why would you give your insurer any reason to not pay you out,for example Churchhill my insurer allow about a max 22% performance gain for a small fee,i have a Racechip Pro 2 chip on my car in summer,i fitted the roof mod and hacked off the 2 back boxes(done by a pro exhaust company)i have the back boxes stored they can be welded back on,oh and my car passed MOT ok with exhaust hacked,so i told Churhill about the 3 mods im 60 full no claims discount comprehensive insurance,so i get max discounts but it cost me just Ł30 more this year on my SLK 200 R172,the insurer will want you to say what you think is the percentage of performance gain you have and that is erm difficult if you can't or don't want to Dyno the car,but until i told them on the phone i was sure the gains are less than 22% getting a quote was going around in circles they want it from your mouth or in writing or something so i guess they can then say well erm you said it was blah blah blah percentage.
Racechip is adjustable and you can leave the wiring harness attached if your car is not under warranty OFC and i bought mine with a blank you fit into the harness where the chip box plugs in and that returns the car to stock in a few seconds.
Anyway for the small fee i pay i would rather tell the insurer and if the worst came to the worst the insurers would know about the chip being installed if they had to inspect the car due to any claim.
So top and bottom of my mods is the insurer just wanted me to state a % figure and not a Dyno factual figure, but isn't every Dyno different anyway?

Are you doing the fuel economy from the screen or from tank-to-tank fill-ups?

The most common way to increase the performance on diesels is to increase the duration of the injector pulse. So every time the injector fires it adds more fuel per pulse. The car calculates the fuel economy based on counting injector pulses so if the injector duration is increased by 10% but you use the same number of pulses, the car thinks the economy is the same but it’s actually 10% worse. I strongly suspect if you check it correctly the fuel economy isn’t really any better.

And from my own experience of running remapped CDi250s your frequency of DPF regenerations will increase (you might also see an increase in adBlue usage as well in the 250d because your particulate emissions will definitely have increased.

Hi Chris,

Did you go for a remap or new chip in the end?

Hi Buzzdog (et al) - so far I've still not done anything! This mainly due to the fact that, whilst there has been a lot of useful info made available through the site (for which I'm extremely grateful), I still have not found any details with respect to the actual 'performance increase', ie no-one seems to have seen how the supposed increase in bhp / torque translates into timed changes in car performance (eg 0 - 60mph, 30 - 80mph etc.). Until I know what the 'on the road' increases are I can't see any point - claimed increase in bhp / torque don't really carry any weight. Still hoping that a few chappies and chappeses will go down that route and provide info so that members can make a really informed choice. But thanks again to all who have taken interest in this post - all info is very much appreciated.

Cheers.

Found your post whilst looking for results also, I like the sound of the gear responsiveness in Efficiency, but I would also like to know the impact on my daily mpg, specially if the computer has not been edited and is feeding a false mpg result, hiding any increased mpg. I've only had my 250 for 3-4 weeks, so I will just enjoy it as it is for now, maybe get it tuned next summer
