SLK 200 Power Increase

Has anyone out there successfully increased the power of there 200 with a remap or control box? I've contacted several tuning shops with varying replies - some happy to offer "chips" or rolling road remaps or control boxes but others, notably GAD tuning not tuning this engine. Most worrying was GAD's response to my enquiry saying they did not tune this engine as it was,in their words,"a weak engine" without elaborating on their statement. I have tried to get them to say what areas the engine is weak without any success ie.no reply to emails! Obviously I don't' want to create problems for myself by remapping somewhere else. Brabus are quite happy to add 20 BHP with no mods other than a control box and 40BHP with extra cooling so they must be happy the basic engine will take the strain. I understand this engine has been around a number of years in various guises so I would have thought Mercedes would have sorted out any "weak" areas. Any advice will be appreciated.

In my experience, if a tuner says they won't tune an engine, they usually have bad history with that engine.

If you want to play it safe, then you're looking at Brabus (and only 20-40PS power upgrade) for £1400-£2500 at which point you'd be FAR better off trading in your 200 for a 250 or 350.

adding some info on this, I did some research turns out, there are a lot of slk200 that are being purchased in most countries well I am not sure why that is happening, but it seems our engine m271evo is almost the same as the c class one, and we can use some chip and add in some performance gain, but it wouldn't be much, just better

It's fine a well specc'd up tuning box from a reputable tuner is fine.
Yes, it adds a bit more strain on components, but it's still within operating limits & whenever a value is created that might be outside the operating limits, extra power isn't delivered e.g. when my engine was cold it NEVER gave me any extra power above and beyond stock.

I cannot stress enough, how important it is to use a decent tuning box.
People have damaged engines from cheap boxes. A proper tuning box is NO less than £350. It should have connectors to all kinds of different sensors...

I would also advise an intercooler (VATH are your best bet), I don't know ambient temps in Indonesia but definitely get one to get the most out of your engine.

I actually wanted to get mine to 250HP + but I fell in love with a Porsche instead

quick question are you running slk200 or 250? well, over here in Indonesia, lots of people used Racechip and no other options available for SLK unless I go and purchase from ebay and so on.

so I am wondering if racechip ultimate can work with my slk? as I heard its bad but so many mercs here used that.

I had an SLK 200 R172.
It made 186HP and 271NM at stock with a custom exhaust backbox to bring the noise out to match the power uplift.

I would STRONGLY advise against Racechip. There are loads of people with damaged injectors on the CLA / A Class forums. They are a slightly better than a total rubbish tuning box.

Go for a reputable brand dude. Don't chance it.

Get one off eBay, the key in looking for a decent box is:
1) Obviously the brand name behind it and the reviews associated. Look for good AND bad reviews. Always get both sides of the coin. There are risks associated and you need to mitigate them as best you can. See point 5)
2) The number of connectors the box has. Have at least 3 or 4 different connectors to different sensors so the box is taking readings from all 'departments' of the cars electronics (LOL i'm not an automotive engineer I don't know a better phrase)
3) Get an adjustable box, which allows you to adjust the torque curve and power output which leads me to the next point
4) Get a well regarded tuner, or Mercedes specialist to fit it ON A DYNO.
5) Trace ability. Make sure the box doesn't leave a trace in the ECU once disconnected. God forbid the turbo blows (rare) or your fuel pump goes (common in ALL tuned cars) you don't want to be screwed by MB too if your warranty is void - however, to all the butthurt members, I'm not condoning warranty fraud or anything to that effect.

You are welcome to PM, i'll happily have a Skype call with you to help if you need it!

Post up the box you want to go for, i'll have a look at it if you want, before you buy so you get a second opinion.

Hi u_2504,

thank you for the advice, then I will cancel thinking about racechip, the price here is around $900 for the ultimate version, and question please which of the tuning box you recommend and price range?

thank you!

Lets work backwards on this one; what is your max budget and i'll have a search for one.

Some cost $800-$2500 and what are your target numbers? What else do you want to do to the car?

well, I am setting a budget to get downpipe, tuning box, throttle control and some valvetronic exhaust. but it seems this budget will fly up sky roof top

tuning box is good around 800-1000USD max

Hi people.
I have a question myself that would like to see answered by someone with more knowledge on the matter. Not that i would make it, as i'm quite happy with my car as it is and not much money to kid around with this theories, just some curiousity.
As i understand, the SLK 200 and SLK 250 share the same engine (M271Evo for 2011/2012 models) and the difference is basically the performance output (184HP vs 201HP).
I've saw some places that offer a remap for both with claims of +27% power.
My idea is, since both are the same engine, could someone fit a SLK250 ECU into a SLK200 (making it a 201HP engine) and then remaping that ECU in order to get even more juice from it? (Of course doing some modifications necessary to acomodate that extra power, like filters, intercooler...). That theoretically would make 184HP -> 255HP. Would that even be doable?
And if someone wants to be even crazier, could just slap a performance chip on top of that In the case of Brabus it would make it around 275HP-295HP for an 1.8L engine. How crazy would that be?
In the matter of fact, i think that wouldn't be so extreme as we might think, the A45 AMG has 360HP on a 2.0L engine and is only a 4 cylinder

Happy cruising.

FYI- Perfomance chips are BS. Unless you hand over your life savings to Brabus, Vath, or Kleimann and do their full tune. Your better off installing performance air filter and exhaust on that thing, about the best you can do. If you want more, I recommend selling it and stepping it up a notch or two w a 350 or 55

Correct. The difference in power comes from the turbo set-up.
I've saw some places that offer a remap for both with claims of +27% power.
Correct, but there is a trade off - a little more power, but only in some of the band and economy changes.
My idea is, since both are the same engine, could someone fit a SLK250 ECU into a SLK200 (making it a 201HP engine) and then remaping that ECU in order to get even more juice from it? No to the ECU change, the 250 ECU will do different things at different times. Cooling the air will help as well tuning the dump valve, but maybe take you up a few HP that will be hardly noticeable in performance figures, but you will notice a more efficient and responsive engine.
And if someone wants to be even crazier, could just slap a performance chip on top of that In the case of Brabus it would make it around 275HP-295HP for an 1.8L engine. How crazy would that be?
Yes a chip will give you a bit extra - depending on the type of chip though, but as before, there is a trade off. The extra power will be localised and economy will suffer.
In the matter of fact, i think that wouldn't be so extreme as we might think, the A45 AMG has 360HP on a 2.0L engine and is only a 4 cylinder
The A45 uses a totally different engine completely designed in house by AMG to answer the call for 'more from less'. Yes this engine is already producing in excess 450HP and is designed to take over 500...

Happy cruising.

Fitted a Racechip Pro2 to my SLK 200 R172 year 2012 about a month ago now,but only yesterday did i take the car for a proper sporty drive to the Evo Triangle Wales UK (120 mile or so round trip i think),a place i really like to visit,i spoke alot to Racechip themselves via Emails and they answered all my questions over several weeks of slowly ajusting the chip on daily runs and such, anyway i have took the performance level up to what Racechip say is its level 3 performance setting(left dial set to 0 thats 12 o'clock position.
Racechips YT advert says they got 40 or more BHP from my car with their chip i am OFC open minded and they will tell you it depends on different Engine tolerance ect but i know my car pulls harder now in sports mode and Eco feels like it restricts harder acceleration even more now.
Now i am also confused by comments from people who have never even fitted the chip to this car telling other people that Racechip are S---t as i thought they have been a reputable company for some time and the Pro2 chip is around £350 so is not a £20 chip?
I searched high and low to find any review on chipping my car and there is not much out there i can find so i got my Racechip Pro2 second hand on EB £50 and gave it a go myself.
All i can say is i like it and it is not BS on the setting i have it my car is better and i checked with Racechip if my car would be fine on level 3 in it's stock form they said the power they advertised or got on the YT add was on a stock car.
I also had the 2 back boxes deleted on my car stock tips welded back on as i never liked how quiet the stock car was even with its roof down i had to thrash the car above 5k revs to hear anything sporty, the exhaust mod may not be for everybody there is a little drone with the roof down at any constant speed but i would rather hear some noise from the back of the car than the stock setup, cost £140 to chop the back boxes and straight pipe to the original chrome tips, never lost the blurp sound the car made when thrashed on gear up changes either just all a lot louder but can still be controlled by how much your revving the car, next MOT will be interesting as no guarantee yet that it will pass one,i feel it is not excessive at all!and i have OFC still got the back boxes stored so they can be welded back on the car if needed.
I like the car more now with the roof down now it makes some noise when asked to and OFC it will never be a V6 V8 or the fiesta ST ecoboost i had before this(if only you could drop the roof on the ST) but trust me i have the sport suspension on my car too and i feel i have a fair mix of roof down fun now,Oh i fitted the roof mod too £180 used off EB and opening the roof now at 30mph (with great care on straight roads without pot holes)can also drive with rear windows up or down, and 3 clicks on car key fob will open or lower the roof within range of the fob.
These are the mods i wanted for my car and hope this helps anybody who was pondering on such mods!
As for what will happen to my Engine with a chip on, it's removable in 2 minutes and put back to stock with a blank plugin and anybody worried about Engine damage after chipping is like overclocking your desktop CPU do not do it if your not willing to face possible downsides, would i do it on a newer car under warranty? erm nope i would not.
I could not find any facts on this thread to prove a racechip would kill my Engine so i go it alone with fingers crossed, many petrol heads do silly things and if they had not done those silly things they may not have loved their Bat mobiles as much!
0H!and yes i did have the roof down all the 120 or so miles yesterday was warmer in the car than the house i live in.

Main thing i hate about the car is it's Auto 7g plus gearbox Manual paddle shift is BS another gearbox that stops you selecting all the gears you chose it always drops the car into 1st gear at stops although i feel the car should launch from 2nd gear and does so just fine but Yes Auto great for city drives but i miss Manual shift on runs like the Evo Triangle i just did again!

@Teggsy

Oh they can read it, etc.
I posted the fyi since you quoted the op and wanted you to be aware that the op might never return to respond...

as a newbie, you might want to change your view so you can see the original posting date to avoid in posting in old threads

https://www.slkworld.com/new-members-...d-how-fix.html

The only time one should post in an old thread is to post a resolution/fix/update to the thread topic.
How old is old? More than 2 years usually
Otherwise, just start a new thread.

Your car is not old...5 years old, as compared to a 21 year old 1996 r170

Whatever makes you happy
some members will not venture into an old thread

so we recommend starting a new one as it will be on top of the forum more than an old one will as members 'pop' into it to see what it is about...just sayin'
