06 R171 SLK350 to SLK55 AMG Big Brake Upgrade HELP!ADVICE?

Hey Guys,

Hoping there are some R171 SLK experts on here that can help me with my current dilemma. I currently own an 06 R171 SLK350 6/spd manual with the upgraded AMG package. (AMG Exhaust/HK Logic 7/AMG side skirts body kit etc...) Love the car, drives like a dream and just wanted to start modding it and make it even more unique.

Anyways I ended up purchasing a full AMG brake kit (Calipers/Rotors/Pads) off a salvaged 06 SLK55 AMG in hopes of upgrading my OEM stock brakes to the sexier AMG setup. So I dropped off the car along with all the components to my mechanic (Non Mercedes) the other day and upon raising it on the hoist he explained to me that none of the parts will fit and can't be used. Is this true??

I assumed they were simply bolt on as from reading from previous posts that all R171 had the same struts and wheel hubs and was super excited and went ahead and bought them but this recent news has me feeling the opposite of that. Am I missing something here?

Is it because my SLK is a different config because of the 6 SPD manual/AMG factory upgrades? Is there any way I can get these to fit and make work or am I straight outta luck and have to find another particular set or AMG Caliper/Rotor upgrade is not even possible on my car? Any advice or feedback and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I have VIN numbers for both my car as well the donor car if that helps out any. Hope to hear better news soon from a fellow member(s) who have way more expertise in this department than myself who were able to do this particular upgrade successfully.

Thanks in advance!

MB is good about putting the part number on virtually every part. See if you can find the caliper part number and front rotor disk number.

For a second I thought maybe the front knuckle - that the caliper attaches to, might be different between the two cars, but upon checking they are the same. Something else is going on here.

I will try another mechanic but i don't think 6 pods from slk 55 will fit on slk 350.
They had the car on the ramp and is easy to check.
If the front knuckle are the same you need a bigger brake disc and a alloy to clear that caliper.

I had the same issue putting the Brembo brakes which also were and possible option on my Jaguar XKR. The guy who sold me the calipers said they fit but there were threaded holes needed where the standard brakes had holes and the caliber had threaded holes. He ended up also giving me the suspension parts that were different. Of course there were extra cost for me getting the suspension parts fitted and getting the wheels aligned again.

I would say contact the seller and get these parts.

Have a hunch on this, recalling a previous thread.

What size wheels?

I think they need to be 18" on the 350 to fit.

I'll post a link if I can find it.

I've not gone by your datacards as folks can change wheel sizes.

A search gives this:- https://www.slkworld.com/gtsearch.php...kes%20to%20350

From which:- https://www.slkworld.com/performance-...rs-slk350.html

@cyberdrakon may be able to help. https://www.slkworld.com/performance-...slk-350-a.html
He recommends the swap you are doing over going the brembo route.

Let us know the outcome.
It looks like no-one has come back with a yes, or no after asking this question.

That said, there are pages of threads and I just skimmed a few.

Okay thanks alot guys, this a very good start. I'll get the part numbers for calipers and rotors when I go pickup the car later this week. Hopefully with that info I'll be better equipped to answer some of these newer questions that have arisen and eventually come up with a working solution.

Appreciate all the input. Will keep you posted!

Here is a thread that may give you some additional info. It discusses the different types (all for SLK 55) of calipers, rotors and mounting brackets. Some good clear photos too.

Can you ask your indy to be more specific than none of the parts will fit. Seems like the 030 calipers should bolt directly on to the spindles (presuming they sold you the calipers and mounting brackets as an assembly). If not you should be able to get the brackets and/or the spindles off of the donor car. Brake lines would likely be a different length as well.

I have owned both an 06 350 and now have a 06 55 AMG P30. I know for certain the rotors are way different on the 55 than the 350 I owned. This could be the issue?

Wheels have to be 18". Other than that things should fit with the exception of some bits and bobs. Forum member "etyu" did the swap from 4-pot to 6-pot on his 2008 SLK55, but I took over his 4-pot brakes and put them on my 2006 SLK350. My switch was a straight swap. His I think may have required some brackets and bolts.

There is a long thread on this when he was doing all the work, full of part numbers etc. I tried to find it for a bit, but my google-fu is lacking today it seems.

EDIT: I believe this is the thread I was thinking of:

Hey Guys,

So I finally picked the parts back up and was able to take detailed pics of what I have and wrote down part numbers. Here's what I was able to gather.

Rears (4 pot)
20.8042.01
20.8043.03

Fronts (6 pot)
20.8885.031A
20.8885.041A

I wasn't able to get anything off the rotors but I've included pics of everything I have. The fronts do indeed have the brackets on them so I'm confused on what else I think I need to make these fit. Let me know what you experts think or if you need any additional info or more pics of the calipers/rotors.

Thanks!

When you picked it all up, were you able to get anything that made sense as to what the install issue was (beyond they don't fit) out of the tech?

If the tech wasn't forthcoming, my guess would be the caliper bracket mounting points on the 350 might be different than the 55. You might want to check the PN# on each.

Or, the is it possible that for some reason the guy didn't really want to do the work... ? Liability concern putting used brake parts on ???
