1000 euro upgrade

Ladies and Gents,
I will be handing over the SLK to the misses once my new car arrives but I want to give it a bit more growl before I do as she likes the sound of an engine.....

Therefore if I was going to spend 1k euro on upgrade(s) what would you recommend - I do not need to have an engine that has enough torque to pull the Earth out of orbit but a nicer more growling engine noise if the aim of the game....

Any recommendation is welcome.
Cheers

Thanks, Jeff

Would a sports filter box be a recommended update also?

Imho, they don't add much hp wise. Get some green filters or spend some dough

As Jeff recommended:

1. Remove resonator and replace with X-pipe, and
2. Remove secondary cat (catalytic converter) and replace with short section stainless steel pipe of appropriate diameter

IIRC, with completion of the above 2 procedures, the vehicle will still pass MOT (several members in the UK have done this to their 55's).

Once you've got the sound fit a smarttop if you haven't already.

It gets almost as many looks as the sounds but is also very satisfying pressing 'open' from the point you leave a building
to have an open top by the time that you reach the car.

I don't think X pipes would help the SLK 200, which has a Y-pipe in place, I think the best option is to change the muffler.

OP has a r171 slk 200.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 200 only has a single exhaust pipe coming out of the motor. How would you setup an x-pipe?

On the other hand it supercharged, maybe someone makes an overdrive pulley for the 200 like they do for the r170 slk32's. That, an ECU mod, and some good flowing air filters and the little I4 should sound much more snarly.

And I'm sure your wifey wont mind some extra ponies...

A smaller pulley / belt etc upgrade would give a bit more power
And ecu mod .

But the op is after growl noise so best bet is a modded back boxes or removal of wadding in rears .
Or removal of center exhaust section .....?

I presumed that with a budget of 1k, OP's wife would want results that offered an aggressive growl and a car that was more fun to drive. He should be able to get both for that kind of coin.

If I were you I'd choose a variation of Kleemann tuning which pass my budget.

Thanks for the tips guys. As Delucas said, the growl is more of the aim.....but of course ball crushing acceleration is never to be sniffed at

There are company's here that will make / fabricate or allready have rear sections for your slk id imagine from 350.00 - 600.00 on make and look .

But add a K&N air filter as there quite cheap .
Ive been using one for a year or two now .

And no issues at all in fact bumped my mpg .

Always got compliments about the exhaust note from our 2008 (facelift) SLK200. That had the stock exhaust system and did sound better than earlier SLK 200s. Don't know if the later exhaust fits the pre-facelift model, the trapezoid tailpipes would dictate some mods for the rear bumper.
