Build from 163 bhp to 200 bhp

Hi everyone, i was wondering if anyone on here has managed to get a 1.8 200 k from 163 bhp to 200bhp. I am only curious about this and was wondering, so please do not have a go at me!
I have seen that one specific remap is supposed to give 25 bhp/ 45nm.
Mercedes SLK-class Remaps Lincolnshire | Mercedes SLK 200 Kompressor 1.8 163(+04)

If anyone has went about this and would recommend this please get in contact. If i were to do this that would obviously put me up to 188bhp, anyone have any suggestions on how to get the extra 12 bhp?

My slk is box standard by the way!

I have a smaller pulley on mine , which is certainly noticeable , can't say exactly how much extra bhp it gives , but along with the remap it should get you near to what you're looking for and it's not a really expensive mod ...

So i take it a smaller pulley for the supercharger gives a bigger mechanical advantage etc hence the gains? Am i correct?

Also i wouldn't need to change the belt would i?

A smaller pulley on the kompressor makes it spin faster giving you more boost .

No need to change the belt , the tensioner takes up the slack , it's only changing from 72mm to 62mm ( if I remember rightly ) ...

I asked my Merc mechanic about the smaller compressor pulley, he said this thing only itself does nothing because there is a blowing valve on the compressor, the smaller pulley spins the crank faster which generates more air but there is a maximum pressure, if the pressure gets over that the valve will blow the air out, so finally it does nothing. You have to remapping the ECU not to lose the more air pressure...

Fulldragon is correct. Small pulleys are available on ebay, but without the change to the blow-off, they will not do anything other than give you a psychological boost!

Other than club racing in Germany, the 1.8 kompressor just has not had the demand to do anything else than it was intended for - getting a car from A to B inexpensively and trouble free.

The German club racing scene will be able to port a head to liven things up, but it is all one-off stuff. The only commercial upgrade I know is the Kleeman kompressor kit that will give you all the necessary parts to benefit from the smaller wheel. But it is expensive. There are various powerchips and remaps too, but on their own most will be unnoticeable.

Dont forget kleeman 4 branch manifold available seperately and a K & N air filter also available seperately .

Along with the pulley kit and belts .
And of course a re map .

The later 1.8 had more bhp power by the way .

Yes, I am being a bit flippant, there is a gain yes, but how significant is subjective. For me, if I wanted that extra power I would go to a 350 and be done with it. imo you cannot beat the old fashioned cubic inches!
If you feel the difference a small pulley makes, then try and have a look at the valve - on a supercharger it is really a bypass valve, (blow off is not as critical as it is with a turbo charger) but if you were to increase it a bit it would ensure that all the extra pressure the small wheel produces is used usefully.

How much time ago did you do this modification? What are your experiences with the compressor lifetime, any problems? Or with the water pump, or other belt tensioners?

I've had it on a few months , no problems , but I haven't done a great deal of mileage !
Also I have the A......2080 kompressor which I beleive to be one of the more reliable ones ...

There is of course a gain. The blow off/bypass valve will not activate until you reach the maximum pressure. I cannot say when or if it will be reached, but on mid revs on the engine, you will have higher boost pressure with smaller pulley, compaired with same rpm with standard pulley. That will give you more power at that rpm. The question is, if the boost pressure flats out when you hit close to 6000 rpm, due to the valve opening or not.

I did the change last week but it wasn't so easy as I tought earlier - I'll post it longer in the IBF pulley's topic later.

Experiences after a week (2006 R171 200k with Eaton M65, M271, 163 PS):
- Torque and max. torque comes very early, pedal reaction is quicker
- If I have to say something I would say the inreasing now is somewhere about +25 HP / 30 Nm without ECU remapping
- The car has more stronger, quicker until I reach 160-170 Km/h where - as I think - the engine got too much oxygen and the oxygen/petrol mixture gets poorer in petrol, so the acceleration starts to decrease and the car starts to suffer to reach the 200 Km/h (which I easily took over earlier)
- I hear very rarely the blow off valve so I think the supercharger doesn't fill over too many times and passes the 0,9 bar pressure
- Finally my own opinion is you have to do the ECU remapping for the correct fuel supply, not to mention to reach ~190-195 Hp / 280-300 Nm

As promised I try to write some words about last friday's ECU remapping done by a specialist who only do ECU programming for 15 years and nothing else.

He programs specially for the customer and don't use template programs. His program depends on:
- The car (engine, type of gear, how many km's are in the car, modifications)
- What the customer needs (only optimalization, much better car inside the limits which are safe, racecar: push it to the limits...)

My most important claim was the car must be (it is an everyday car, and I don't have another) trustable, operate anytime and the upgraded performance must be inside the security limits because I want to sleep well at every night.

According to my upper needs we discussed he will modificate much things until 3000-3500 engine rpm, above that limit he will return to the manufacturer's original numbers successively - this method will guard the supercharger's lifetime. (If you don't care or don't worry about any part's lifetime the numbers below should be higher ofc.)

He made a first program and when we tried it I said some remarks and ask some fine tune in the upper rpm region against the well fuel consumption, so he wrote another program to achieve the goals.

Finally I am satisfied. I didn't do any serious measurement on Dyno because I don't care how much HP is it exactly - as I said it is an everyday car other viewpoint was more important for me.

Taking it by and large I have numbers:
~ 180-190 HP
~ 280-290 Nm
~ 15% improvement at 0-100 Km/h in 38 celsius outer air temperature
The gear shifts the 5th at 203 Km/h at 6250 rpm.
My automatic gear is faster, the reaction of the accelerator is quicker.

Whole car is more agile especially in lower velocity until 140-150 Km/h this is far enough for everyday use for me I think.

My costs was:
- IBF smaller SC pulley ~90 EUR
- ECU remapping ~390 EUR
--------------------------------------
TOTAL: ~480 EUR
