New lights

I`m a great beleiver in DRL`s and have found these.

I wonder as they are not standard if the DRL fitting will be a problem. I haven`t looked yet but I presume that the fitting will not be the same.
Has anybody fitted something like them and is there any major difficulties.
Regards to all,
Martyn

Those are the Spyder/Sonar lights:

https://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...eadlights.html

Lots of people on this forum have them. They are a drop-in replacement of the stock lights. Come in chrome, chrome/smoked and black/smoked versions. Your picture shows the chrome.

You have to make sure you get the right version. If your car has the Bi-Xenon headlight option, you should get the HID version (ballasts and headlight washer hardware must be transplanted over from your OEM lights after you take them out and before you put the new lights in). If your car does not have the Bi-Xenon option, get the Non-HID version, even if you plan to add a HID kit: the HID version of the Spyder lights expects precisely the Mercedes OEM equipment, so for an aftermarket HID kit, you need to get the Non-HID Spyders, and bolt on the ballast to some other part of the car.

Thanks for your reply and help.
How can I find out what version of lights the 2007 SLK200 r171 that I want to convert.
In addition......I`m concerned how the DRLs work if they are plugged into the parking light connector?
Thanks again & kind regards,
Martyn

You can post your VIN here to get a datacard which will show whether you have the BiX option or not.

The DRLs are indeed hooked up to the parking light. You can turn the master light switch to Auto to get DRLs and automatic headlights (based on ambient conditions), or to Parking (one click to the right of Auto) to get just the DRLs.

As on your datacard, you do not have any additional headlamp codes, your car will be fitted with standard halogen bulbs and reflectors by default.

Buy the Spyders! They are fantastic, and OEM-quality in every way. I just had mine installed recently. The DRL's are bright and will increase your safety on the road.
Good luck!

Connection

It has been suggested that the new lights be connected to the perking light plug connector.

My son has been helping me work things out and we have come to the conclusion that when the ignition is turned on there is no power to the parking light.

Is the suggestion meant to say "sidelight"?

Regards to all,
Martyn

If the headlight switch is in *any* position other than OFF, there is power to the DRLs on these things.

I may not have explained myself clearly.
When the ignition is on the parking light does not operate (on my car) regardless if it`s set to left or right,so, if I connect the new lights to this (parking light) connector/plug they will not operate.

If there is an easier way of explain it I can`t think of one.

Thanks for the help.
Kind regards

This is my switch

If you are meaning that the lights do not come on when you turn the switch to the "11 O Clock" position, you have to use that position in conjunction with the indicator switch lever.

Turn the switch to that position, press the indicator switch lever down, and the LH "side position markers" (front & rear tail lights ) will illuminate, press the indicator lever up and the right hand side position markers will illuminate.

I rest

I`m gonna sleep on this as I`m following the forums help and my sons and I have now become completely confused.

I will say this once more and reply to any further help tomorrow.

The forum says.....with the supplied socket on the new lights I will plug the DRL fitting to the existing parking light socket. Then the DRL`s will come on when the switch is in any of the positions above.

Thanks to all.
Regards,
Martyn

I have had these lights on my car for 2 years, and I did the install myself. I don't know how I can make it any clearer than the picture.

There is only one way to hook up the lights to the car. There are 4 connections between the OEM headlight housing and the car. There are the same 4 connections between the Spyder headlight housing and the car.

If you make these 4 connections, the lights will behave in the way I indicated in my marked up version of your picture.

Remember, side markers are a 'merricun thing .... we don't have them in the UK...

I'd hook the DRL's up to either their own switched supply, or the side lights .... (option 1 preffered )

Cheers

True, but the sidemarkers have nothing to do with how these are hooked up. They reuse all the existing connection to the headlight housing, which is separate from the leads going to the sidemarkers.

Hooking them up to their own power supply is certainly possible, but would require modification to the wiring harness that the lights come with. It is simply not necessary to do this. They work fine out of the box.
