Kleeman Tune and Headers with Down Pipe

The date.......May 6th........whoopie! Can't wait. The modification should return aprox. 40-45HP at the crank and a little less at the wheels! Getting a great price as well from a "newer" shop with Certified Mercedes Techs. that came highly recommended! THESE are the guys that will be doing the work, just in time for the Tahoe meet up

They are going to check with Kleeman but most probably I will soon be selling my Piecha Power Converter Intermedia RC since the tune will correct the throttle lag as well. If this is correct I will soon be offering in the SLK Parts For Sale section of the forum!

Now I think I am finally DONE!

IIRC, Kleemann said it was fine to use the Sprintbooster with their tune. Definitely try it without and with the Piecha Power Converter before you sell it. How much is the shop charging for installation? Will you be getting a before & after dyno?

Hi James. We will call the guys that are doing the job Shop #3. Labor for the whole job, tune and headers is $1125.00 with parts at $2160.00. They are paying the overnight freight to and from Kleeman which represents part of the savings. So the total job comes to $3285.00. Although the shop has been in business just 3 mos., they came highly recommended to me by a good friend that knows them well and has used them on his Mclaren SLR and on his Mercedes Benz E63. They are actually Master Distributors of other performance products Including Innotech so it's not like they are really new to the market., they just started installs in addition to their distribution business. They stole 3 techs. from Mercedes, BMW and Ferrari. Their shop is spotless and conveniently located within 5 miles from my office. This shop is not authorized as a Kleeman dealer but can obviously get the parts.

Shop #2 came in at $1400.00 labor, $2400.00 parts plus $120.00 freight via UPS ground which will take a week for a total of $3920.00. They have been around for a while with mixed reviews but again, respected for the most part. They just moved their shop to a new home at Club Auto Sport, a very high end performance complex in San Jose where several tuners have shops. This shop used to be listed as an authorized Kleeman dealer but fell off the list about 6mos. ago. Again, they are in San Jose so not quite as convenient to get to.

Shop #1 is the actual listed Kleeman dealer. They came in at $3700.00 parts and labor plus freight but did not state what that would be. If like shop #2, then there total would be $3820.00. This shop is in San Francisco (the least convenient for me) and the indy. that I just took my car to for the B Service. They have very good reviews and also a spotless shop. But getting him to respond, quote a price, etc..... was like pulling teeth.....almost really weird like they didn't want the business. In talking it over with the owner, it was almost as if he is a "Mercedes Purist" and is sort of against any performance modifications what so ever......go figure

Originally I was thinking of getting both before and after Dynos, but each shop came back with the identical performance gains and this mod. has been done so many times on this board that I am not sure it's really necessary to spend the extra money. All shops offer the same warranty. One year parts and labor (really nothing on the tune which is actually done by Kleeman so it's THEIR warranty anyway) and lifetime (what ever that means) on the welds of the headers.

Sounds like a tough choice with the shops. Did the shops just give you performance numbers or actual dyno graphs? I think I had Kleemann graphs years ago but no before graphs. I can't find them anymore. To my knowledge, I'm not sure if I've seen a before/after graph for a V6 with headers. Maybe an after graph or SLK55s. If I were you, I'd get the baseline and see how much power was gained for the money spent. It also wouldn't hurt to verify the A/F ratio after the mods.

Well, it looks like I will have the time to do it. Just got back from their shop and Kleeman told them they are out of the headers and were looking at 4 weeks before they arrive. In the meantime she goes in next Tuesday for the ECU tune. I suppose that I should have the Dyno before that as well. And yes, I agree that it would be interesting to actually see the gains. I'm on it.

Forgive me for appearing stupid, but what do you mean by A/F ratio?

Hey James, on the Piecha power booster, per Kleeman it's OK to leave it installed but doing so will probably make the throttle "too sharp" and Kleeman recommends taking it out as their tune addresses the lag and they feel that I will not enjoy the car as much.

No big deal as it's just a 20 minute install. I will probably leave it in and see what it's like, then take it out if I don't like it when all is said and done.

On the dyno....they have a shop that they work with. Their shop is all the way over in the East Bay which will not be convenient. There has to be someone closer I just have to do the research.

Does anyone have an idea of what I should be paying for a dyno test with a hard copy print out?

My advice would be to wait to do the ECU tune at the same time with the headers. If I'm not mistaken, your car will be sitting at the shop, while the ECU is removed and sent out to Kleemann for modification and then shipped back to the shop? Then when your headers arrive, the ECU will have to be shipped out again to be modified (for free but shipping both ways at your expense) for the headers/cats.

I'm 99.9% sure the A/F ratio will be fine after the Kleemann tune. But if your car happened to not run right or something was wrong, it's just nice to cover your bases. It's also easier to say exactly how much you gained at the wheels and convert that figure to crank numbers.

I kept the Sprint Booster on the Kleemann/350 and transferred it to my Eurocharged/55. It's not too sharp for me but the MB shop foreman noticed it was definitely more touchy than other 55s for some reason... There's different types of dynos out there. You'll want to go to the same shop to try and keep things consistent.

I got screwed by the shop that installed my Supersprint headers and exhaust setup when they didn't bother to do a before dyno. The after dyno seemed a bit low to me but I had nothing to compare it to.

Per James's suggestion, I have decided to postpone the ECU until the headers arrive and do them all at the same time. Disappointed that this won't be done before the Tahoe meet. But, GTAC told Kleeman that the car was going to be in a meet and Kleeman told them they would try their best to get the headers prior to the meet if possible. I am doubtful that they will have them in time.

Just Arrived!

She goes in on Monday afternoon when GT Auto Concepts of Redwood City will remove the ECU and overnight it to Kleeman so they can perform the tune. Then they will ship it back (overnight) first thing Wednesday morning so the ECU can be re-installed on Thursday morning. In the meantime, GTAC will install the new headers pictured below. So come Friday night, "Zippity Doo Dah"!

By the way, the SLK will be in good company during her stay at the Auto Spa!

So I'm told, the HEADERS won't make much of a difference in sound.....slightly throatier, but not much. But they will add an additional 20HP to the performance.

Your car is going to be right at home with those other ones. You've still got the stock mufflers right? I think there will be a difference in sound because of the headers and cat modifications but toned down because of the mufflers.

Yes, still have the stock mufflers. I am anxious to see how she sounds and performs when all is done.

I saw a pretty large difference in sound under WOT (I like it), but not much difference under partial throttle.
