SLK55 front brake pads and rotors replacement

So last time I was at the MB dealership, they informed me that my 2005 SLK55 front pads and rotors needs to be replaced. I took it easy when driving last year but I think it's time to consider that brake job.

Going with OEM Mercedes parts will cost me close to $3000CAD. So after some research, I found an aftermarket company call Racing Brakes that makes two-piece rotors similar to those found in the stock SLK55. These rotors are half the cost and shed 5lbs per corner.

A lot of people track with these rotors and some even perform "independent" testing on these rotors.

Long story short, anyone using them? What pads would you guys recommend for it?

So Jeff and Eddy, both of you haven't changed your rotors yet? I have about 74000km (~46000mi). I guess the best thing to do is to actually check how thick my rotor thickness is.

Interesting - I'll check to see if they will ship to the UK or have a UK dealer - certainly cheaper than the OE parts...

So far I haven't changed the pads nor rotors after "retrofitting" them a few years back.

Rear discs and pads: Nov 2007
Front discs and pads: Aug 2010

Ahhh okay...

Did you guys stick with stock MB AMG pads?

I like the bite on the stock pads. Sure the dust is a bit more but it's such a nice car to wash on my driveway

Yea... My debate is more just if I need it or not. My car is still covered at the moment. I'll measure the rotor thickness once the snow is gone... Why is this winter sooo long!?!?!?

Have found this thread.
Am speaking to Clive at Shy Auto Developments Ltd (Mazda) (Thanks ZeroZero for the contact in your above post).

Question - going back a stage.
If we already have 2 piece brake rotors already, why can we not just buy replacement rotors (the bell will not wear out).
Bit like buying rechargeable batteries, without having means to recharge them.
Or is this part of AMG tax that comes from owning our cars :-)

I have a 05 car with 6pot callipers (SLK 55 AMG).
My specialist has quoted me £1350 to replace with genuine parts.
Or have I misunderstood, is this bill, just to have rotors replaced - which seems high, but would make sense.

Don't get me wrong, not moaning (as such) as I knew this bill was coming, but looking to see if I can reduce it, and if I can save weight at same time.

Another question - how much does our standard brake rotor (and bell) weigh.

Thanks
Kevin

I finally got Racing Brake 2 piece front rotors... So far so good.

I haven't weight the MB 2-piece rotors yet but the Racing Brake rotors weigh in at 19.8lbs not the 18lbs claimed on the website... But it's alright. However, the MB rotors are definitely heavier based on just lifting the package itself.

Also, keep in mind as long as Racing Brake makes the rotor ring replacement, you can just replace the rotor rings and save a few hundred dollars.

I would advise against the ET500 pads I got from Racing Brake... The initial bite just isn't the same as the stock AMG pads.

Interesting. Does the 55AMG come with different rotors front? My supplier lists only one type of front rotors, and they are single piece.

Some different manufacturers, but the ATE rotors, (345x30mm) are priced at 65€/piece

http://www.autoteilemann.de/catalog/...category/5451/

Just a note, the brake upgrade on my 200Kompressor to the 350 brakes, cost me 700$ US for all four rotors, rear calipers and two sets of cheramic pads. I had to buy the front calipers second hand.

Mods done:
SLK350 Brakes.
18x8" CMS 5-spoke rims.
10mm spacers.
John's 3rd brakelight
Curro101 metal plate
UltraRacing Tower Strut Bar
Short Antenna
S160 Head Unit
SmartTop

Mods to come:
LED Lights
WindRestrictor
Rain Sensor

Well I can tell you that the steering response has improved drastically since I had the rotors installed. Since I don't track my car, it will take me several years to give a comprehensive review on it.

As far as I know, the SLK55 AMG has two piece rotors to begin with in the front. It's 340mm x 32mm. I tried looking at Pelican Parts, Rock Auto, and Tire Rack and they didn't list any replacement parts. So it was either genuine MB parts or try Racing Brake.

If my rear rotors are done as well, I wouldn't think twice and get the 2 piece rotors from RB.

OP, Do you have any contact info for the company you found? Mine are at the minimum and I'll have no choice but to replace the next time around.

I have successfully done pad slap's without rotor turning for years. But you have to watch the rotor thicknesses as they do wear down. If your rotors are still on the original pads, there is a high chance you can just replace the pads, Or if you'd prefer, turn the rotors too. If you're on the second set of pads without a rotor turn, you might be able to get away with turning to the minimum spec. Even if that leaves a few grooves left it should be fine unless you are competing with the car.

The extra heat from constant braking will cause a thinner rotor to start to warp. Much more than .003"-.004" in run out is a big problem causing the pads to drag.

I posted the turning spec here. https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-cla...ng-limits.html

Have Fun!

I followed that guide too... I had 30.2mm left on the rotor which is why I switched.

I would just recommend you to order off their website (google Racing Brake) and look for the 2006-2008 rotors.

You can also do some independent research by some BMW guys and Camaro guys who have used their 2 piece rotors on track and see what their test results are like. Personally I have no issue with the rotors but the ET500 pads I ordered from them didn't have as much initial bite as the MB ones.

Im gathering my parts together to replace all discs and pads front and rear.

Im fitting EBC redstuff all round.

Disc wise I have decided to follow my own path.
Rears I have gone for apec vented discs. I have access to a great local engineering firm who will mill out the drillings and not damage the vents.
Fronts very interesting. Going down the 345mm route and the engineering firm are reducing the OD by 5mm then using a special balancer machine to check for runout.

Apart from obvious cost savings, I want to try and see what REAL alternative there is to getting round the issue of rotor replacement for 6pot 2005 to 2007 owners.

Will post pics and progress reports as I go
ZeroZero and BigDave like this.
