Pep Mods for Me?

Hey Everyone,
I have been enjoying my New to Me SLK320 with the usual updates: new stereo, sexy alarm, wheels, tinted windows, fixed top ...

But now wish to do some of these things to pep it up:

1) ECU tune (fav tuner?)
2) Pulley mod
3) Performance exhaust (tried MagnaFlow, no)
4) Plugs, wires ...
5) Airbox replace (e320 airbox)
6) Drilled brakes (low dust would be GREAT!)

What & in what order would you do ?

I am leaning on Tune & Eisenmann Exhaust but I would just like a bit more pep!!

Thanks!
Steve

The very best "pep" mods that you can do on these cars is proper maintenance. Make sure you have a clean air filter, fresh plugs and strong ignition. The cars are really strong as they sit. Keeping them in good repair keeps them that way.

All of the mods you listed with the exception of the airbox(no significant power gain,) and the exhaust modification will cost in the form of longevity.

Exhaust modifications will not result in significant power gain unless they are individual tubed into a collector. Cat back exhausts or other modifications that do nothing about the restrictive exhaust manifolding will add a very small amount of power. If the different exhaust tone is pleasing, then they might be worth it to you for that, but don't expect significant power gains without good headers.

Well designed long individual tube headers exiting into a stock exhaust system will provide significantly more power gain than will a cat back or manifold back opened up exhaust system.

My $0.02,

The pulley mod is only for the 230. Us 320 owners have to stick w/ our higher stock hp.. woe is us.
(correct me if I'm wrong)

Depending on what mileage you're at there's a few things to do.
But judging by your past toys I think you're well aware of those.

Just passed 100k on mine.
Did steering damper, filters, diff fluid, gummi pledge, coolant, smart top

Have the plugs.. just waiting for a weekend w/ some time to do those. (12 of them.. seriously mb)

Whoops! I didn't even notice that it was a 320. I was thinking 230. It's difficult to imagine a 320 being down on power. Of course, for most performance enthusaists, myself included, the ideal amount of power is "just a little more."

I have a BIL that is a Mercedes Diagnostic Tech at a dealership. He was test driving one of my cars once in about 2001 or so, and as we were coming off of a freeway entrance ramp, he made the comment, "an SLK320 will hit a hundred by the end of that ramp.

I was impressed that the car was that fast, but at the same time, I'm glad he wasn't doing that kind of driving in one of my cars. In his defense though, he might have been diagnosing a performance problem of some sort that required such driving.

Care to elaborate on the "(tried MagnaFlow, no)" comment. Thank you.

1) ECU tune (fav tuner?)
You don't have forced induction on a 320 so an ECU tune will only remove the top speed and rev limiters, and give you a bit of a MPG increase. Ask Eurocharged.com if they have a stock tune for that engine. It can be done remotely with a laptop and a special cable that plugs into your ODBII port.

2) Pulley mod
You don't have a pulley.

3) Performance exhaust (tried MagnaFlow, no)
Eisenmann Sport exhaust, the Race version if you want it to be really loud. I had this on my 230 and it sounded very exotic. Upgrading to the stock 32 AMG exhaust may be a good option for you as well. It will give you the large dual tips with the AMG logo on them as well as upgrade your sound. (The AMG exhaust is manufactured by Eisenmann) and can be bought online from parts.com for I believe $800.

4) Plugs, wires ...
NeedsWings.com has the wires and plugs that I use on my 32

5) Airbox replace (e320 airbox)
NeedsWings.com has a dual cold air intake but it's for the 32. I don't know if it is compatible with the 320, due to the inlet location being different (I think). I would go with a low restriction filter first, like Green or K&N.

6) Drilled brakes (low dust would be GREAT!)
Akebono Euro Ceramic pads are extremely low dust and I use them. Night and day difference between those and stock.

Great looking yellow 170 you got there, looks very familiar. I see you got the AMG body kit and the 09 AMG wheels.

Lowering springs will really set the car apart especially with the upgraded 18" wheels we have.

Good luck!

So I'm going to throw this out there, and attach it to this thread because it's kind of in the same area.

K&N or Green?
Also-do you think this filter would fit the 320?

We purchased two K&N filters for my car.

Jae (DaytonaJae) surprised Preston on his birthday with one for his car and apparently it made a real difference. I completely trust Jae's recommendation and would go with the K&N!

I would stick with a paper filter - obviously no filter at all gives you greater performance, but to have a porous filter like K&N or Green, then sticking oil on it to help make up for it's inadequacies does not make a lot of sense to me. You only have to read about the problems that they allegedly cause with MAF sensors to make you think twice. Car manufacturers used to use oiled filters many years ago, back in the '50s, but have moved on
