LSD for pre facelift 230 kompressor

I´m now pretty finished sorting out my engine performance mods, and the car is now so well powered that an LSD has obviously moved to the first point on the to do list.
I would be very happy if anyone could contribute with information on the MB diffs, such as which other models share the same diff as the R170, differences between the 32AMG and 230, automatic vs manual etc.
Also, does anyone have experience with spring-block mods of the original diff?

You are in deep, scary waters with putting LSD in one of these. Mainly because if you find another car that has it, (SLK32?) the diff ratio will be off and you will go into limp mode.

however - I haven't done any research yet, as I will eventually want one for my V8 R170 swap. I think I read somewhere that you could get one from a 190E cosworth but don't quote me on that. From glancing over other forums, Quaife has a kit for the C43/55 and so does a place called PCS. havent' looked into them yet.

Hi Turdo, firstly, I´m extremely impressed with your rebuild!
The limp won´t be a problem, as I have MT, but still a bit scary about going very different ratio as speed limits around here does not support 3.rd or higher as is. However, it would probably be great for performance numbers to get away with one gear shift 0-100 (0-60mph).
However, I found this Estonian company, Elbe engineering, that has a spring block kit for rebuilding the original diff. Not sure how well it works, but its pretty low cost. You might look up Elbe Engineering
If our diff is changeable with the w201´s there seems to be a lot of possibilities...

there are a lot of 210 guys here asking about them. one guy ke6dcj, seems to make them. I'm thinking of starting a Pelican Parts account just to message him. this was written in 09, though, and they may not still be around.

I am happy to be able to bring good news to this tread!

I recently found out that QUAIFE had made some new models, fitting the W201, W208 and then I thought, also the R170. So after some correspondence with a very helpful gent at birds auto I went ahead and ordered the QDF43B.

The axles need a slight modification, as the original locking ring can not be used. Also, the housing need some tweaking to get the new and bigger differential in, but everything went quite easy and it is now installed. Due to other issues, I will not be able to test it until some time around mid May.

Tried to upload a few picks, but I was not able to. Never really worked out how this forum works....

someone who is better-paid on this forum can probably give a quick comment about the pictures... I'd like to see what modifications you did to make it work. keep us up to date!

Yes, it´s a bit pricey. Had another go at the pictures, hope it helps!

The part number on my original diff. Not the same as predicted from my VIN. This is from a 5-speed manual

Part number of the housing

The diff.

A small groove made for the retaining ring. Also a softer cone made after the splines. Picture auto deoriented by the forum platform

You can see the areas without paint inside the housing. This had to be grinder down to allow the crown wheel slip inside the casing.

MKB - The technology company for development & design on Mercedes-Benz Cars. offers 2 different LSD with %40 locking ratio, 3,46 or 3,27 final drive.

Pre-Facelift 230K (170.447) 5 speed manual has a 3,46 diff. while 5auto has 3,27.
32AMG has 3,07.

@Tor Rabe

You may already know this but the part number on the diff housing - 124 351 05 05 is just for the bare housing, not the full diff. Depending on whether the car is either manual or auto transmission, the complete diff (using that housing) is 202 350 43 14 (manual with ratio of 3.46) or 170 350 12 14 (auto with ratio of 3.27). Hope that helps.

I have been out driving with my new Quaife diff for a few days now. Also added poly bushings and Eibach/Bilstein B12 kit. As well as added a rear sway bar (H&R and upgraded the front sway bar to H&R. BIG smile!!

Awesome thread and excellent info! I always hated how MB started relying on electronics to keep the car from sliding instead of just giving it more grip. I guess TC is to be expected in a mass market car like this, but that doesn't help those of us seeking performance since it makes the car pretty skittish when the TC is off. /rant

So, Tor, how is the balance of your car now? Or do you push it that hard? I know some countries have such onerous penalties for driving fun that most everyone just gives up and drives the speed limit.

Also, what ratio did you wind up with? If I'm not mistaken the pre-FL diffs interchange with the FL diffs. Do you have any info on that?

Finally, I'm the one who asked about light flywheels on the other forum. Do you have one in your car?

I haven't been able to push it really hard, but for shure the understeer is less prominent, if not vanished. I am able to let the rear end out in corners on dry tarmac with some spirited use of the right foot in 2.nd gear. Absolutely no noticeable swaying, neither sideways when cornering or front/rear during breaking or acceleration. It's just like I have a sports car now


I use the same crownwheel and pinion, just moved the crownwheel over to the new diff unit, so the ratio is still 3,46.


I can not guarantee this, but I have not found anything to suggest the diffs are any different on the facelifts. The facelift has a rear sway bar though, that would probably be the most important difference between the two.



Still running stock flywheel, but might be in the market for a lighter one when my clutch dies...

Thanks, Tor! Not sure I'll ever get around to doing it (too many other car projects) but I love the idea of a Quaife in the R170. That you've been able to make it work is very encouraging.

These cars are quite rigid for their time and the suspension design should certainly allow for great handling. The wheelbase is the biggest issue I see-- it's awfully short for such a heavy car. Consequently, you need excellent balance to be able to push it hard and you need to put power down when you need it to control the rear end. Since MB elected to use electronics to keep the rear in check it's very tough to properly balance the handling. The Quaife should greatly enhance the handling potential

You've done some great upgrades. Thanks for sharing the info. It's encouragement to try to finish some of the other cars so I can follow in your footsteps.
