Matts SLK32 Project

Hi guys

Firstly thanks to the forum for all the inspiration and advice! - Special mention to "Jae" on his excellent 32 rebuild - mind blowing impressive..

Anyway I'm not sure if my journey will add much because so much has been done/written but hopefully it contributes in some way...

I should also add that I'm based in South Africa so we have WAY less access to parts and a currency that is cr*p compared to US$ - luckily I have two brothers in the States who I visit regularly so I can get parts (eventually) and will in time hopefully get to see some of the SLK "works of art" stateside sometime if there are any forum meet ups..

Fist thing I've done already is strip the interior (pending vinyls and plastics repaint) and built a proof of concept CAI - it works AWESOME, it cost basically nothing (about $90 USD)... I'm still possibly gonna get the needwings kit though.. Ill post pics - at risk of throwing my name away in terms of "craftsmanship" and materials used but remember its a P of C !

I do have TWO key questions :

1. Can anyone advise how to get around the rain water access problem? I saw a pic of a "BMP Racing" modified cone filter with preventive shield but couldn't find it on google...

2. I've kept the standard AMG intake rubber on - it seems to have an "AMG designed" AMG labelled airflow - I think that this is important re turbulence and I'm getting mind blowing performance anyway - Is my thinking correct? - Does the needswings CAI also have this intake "flow design"?

3. Does anyone have a view as to whether a thin piece of piping will cool mor effectively than a thicker one? Also apart form good looks what positive attributes does stainless steel have from a performance POV?

4. I also just deleted the resonator cost $40 - I couldn't believe it when the guys told me my one CAT had no material left in it and the CAT material had gone through and blocked this round baffle that is in the resonator - I took a pic.. you will notice just how crazy restricted the exhaust gas flow is in the resonator... I cant say how much performance this added because it sounds great - more deep but still respectable at low revs, such as pulling into a parking lot and so on...IMO exhaust tone an art form...its kinda like chrome - awesome in tasteful amounts, really embarrassing if over done ..

Anyway pics to follow soon any comments, help or advice greatly appreciated..

Cheers
Matt

Hi Matt,

I have the Need wings CAI this was my feedback to them:

I just wanted to give you guys some feedback on the "CAI" I recently purchased for my SLK32AMG hopefully you will take this feedback in the positive light it is intended to improve the product in the future.

1) The items in the attachment do not fit the SLK32AMG and are not required. This is very confusing as this is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions. I suggest these parts should not be supplied in this kit as I purchased the kit in the SLK32AMG link on your website and wasted a lot of time trying to figure out how to fit them!!!

2) The silicon Y coupler kept coming off. I need to cut 4 slots in it at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock for it to stay on correctly. Again no mention of this in the instructions and these should be pre-cut.

3) 70mm pipe. This is 4cm too short. The supplied pipe needs to be longer.

4) The Alu elbow is the wrong shape where it meets the bulk head (round peg - square hole)

5) Overall the whole kit would fit better and look better! if you had made it 70mm rather than 77mm There would be no need for the 70 to 77 converter which would visually look at lot better, being the same on both sides with less clips and join's. The main pipes stamped needwings would fit better and you most likely, would not require those silly wear pads. OK you lose 7mm on the pipe I would rather the kit installed better, look better and fit better than have the extra 7mm furthermore the pipe has already been restricted to 70mm so the increase is pointless!!!

Stage 1.. When I opened the kit, it looked fab and very professional.
Stage 2.. I was extremely disappointed in the fitting, taking 5 hours and a fair amount of rejigging to get it to fit.
Stage 3.. The car runs and sounds fab...

I am interested to know your thoughts on my comments. In my opinion you really need to work on number Stage 2 !!!

I would also be interested to here your comments on some feedback below I have received after the install when I mentioned better airflow:

Regards
Phill

The reason I ask is that I've been toying with the idea of fitting this myself.
Maybe I'll wait until their customer service improves

Oh, and sorry @SLK55ster for hijacking your thread

Thanks Phil & TFP..

I can understand the concern - the gap between the car frame and radiator is extremely tight and oval not round... I thought it was maybe due to me being in a very warm climate my car has a larger radiator... anyway Im making a plan with that "last mile" issue at the moment ...
